RICHARD NEVILLE, (great-grandson of sir Henry Neville, knt., a younger brother of Edward, 5th lord Abergavenny,) was of Billingbear, co. Berks, and left, besides other issue, a son, RICHARD, and a da., Anne, m. Richard Rainsford, of Dallington, co. Northampton, and had an only da. and heiress, Anne, who m. James, 3d lord Griffin, and left issue 2 das. and co-heiresses, of whom Elizabeth, the eldest, m., 1st, her cousin, Henry Grey, of Billingbear, esq., and 2dly, John, earl of Portsmouth; and the 2d, Anne, m. William Whitwell, of Arundel, co. Northampton, and was mother of

JOHN GRIFFIN WHITWELL, who took the surname of Griffin, in 1749, claimed and was allowed the barony of Howard, of Walden, 1784, (see that title,) and, 5 Sept. 1788, was created baron Braybrooke, with limitation to Richard Aldworth-Neville, esq., who was son of Richard Neville-Aldworth-Neville, of Stanlake, co. Berks, esq., (who took the name of Neville, in addition to his paternal name of Aldworth, 1762,) and grandson of Richard Aldworth, of Stanlake, esq., and of Catherine, his wife, who was da. of Richard Neville, and niece of Anne Rainsford above mentioned. His lordship m., 1st, March 1748, Anne-Mary, da. of col. John Shultz, (who d. 18 Aug. 1764,) and 2dly, 11 June 1765, Catherine, da. of William Clayton, of Harleyford, co. Bucks, esq., but dying without issue, 25 May 1797, was succeeded in the barony of Braybrooke by the said

RICHARD ALDWORTH-NEVILLE, 2d lord, to whom his lordship also bequeathed the estates of Audley End, on condition of his taking the surname of Griffin only, which he accordingly did 1797. His lordship was appointed lord-lieut., custos rotulorum, and vice-admiral of Essex, 1797, and was also provost marshal of Jamaica, recorder of Saffron Walden, high steward of Wokingham, and hereditary visitor of Magdalene College, Cambridge; b. 3 July 1750, m., 9 June 1780, Catherine, youngest da. of the right hon. George Grenville, and sister of the 1st marquess of Buckingham,

His lordship's grandfather, sir JOHN STEWART, of Grandtully, bart., m. Jane Douglas, only sister and heiress of Archibald, duke of Douglas, (upon whose decease, in 1751, the dukedom became extinct; but the marquessate of Douglas devolved upon the heir male, the duk of HAMILTON,) and had issue, 2 sons, ARCHIBALD and Sholto, twins, b. at Paris 1748, of whom Sholto d. young, and

EDWARD-THOMAS HOVELL-THURLOW, BARON THURLOW, of Thurlow, co. Suffolk; born 12 Nov. 1814; succeeded his father, Edyard, late lord, 4 June 1829; married, 9 Nov. 1836, Sarah, only da. of eter Hodgson, esq., and has issue,

THE family of Thurlow is of considerble antiquity in the northern parts of the ounty of Norfolk. At the beginning of the 5th century, 3 brothers of that name, Thonas, William, and Hugh, were possessed of ands in the parishes of Burnham Overy, Burnham Ulp, and Burnham Sutton, near Lynn. William Thurlow, of Burnham Ulp, was grandfather of

RICHARD THURLOW, who d. 1599, leavng, besides other issue, 2 sons; 1. EDWARD, Ancestor of the present lord; and, 2. Nicholas, whose son, John, had a grant of arms from sir Edward Bysshe, Clarenceux, 1664, commemorative of his extensive travels in Europe, Asia, and America; and dying without surviving issue, 1685, left his estates to his cousin, the rev. Thomas Thurlow, of Wortham, grandfather of the 1st lord.

EDWARD THURLOW, 1st baron Thurlow, was educated at Canterbury school, and afterwards at the university of Cambridge; 1770, he was appointed solicitor-general, and 23 June 1771, succeeded sir William de Grey, knt., as attorney-general; 3 June 1778, he was appointed lord high chancellor of England, and on the same day created a peer of the realm, by the title of baron Thurlow, of Ashfield; he resigned the great seals, April 1783, and was again appointed to them

in December following, and held that high office until 1792, when he again resigned. On the 12th of June, in the same year, he was created baron Thurlow, of Thurlow, with remainder to the issue male of his brothers, Thomas, bishop of Durham, and John Thurlow, esq. His lordship d. unm. 12 Sept. 1806, when the barony of Thurlow, of Ashfield, became extinct; but the title of baron Thurlow, of Thurlow, devolved on his nephew,

GEORGE EDEN, BARON AUCKLAND, of West Auckland, co. Durham, Baron Auckland in Ireland, Governor-General of India, and Auditor and a Director of Greenwich Hospital, P.C., G.C.B.; born 25 Aug. 1784; succeeded his father, William, the late lord, 28 May 1814.

His lordship's ancestor, sir ROBERT EDEN, of West Auckland, represented co. Durham in several parliaments, and was created a bart. 13 Nov. 1672; m. Margaret, da. and sole heiress of John Lambton, esq., and d. March 1720, leaving, besides other issue, a son and heir,

WILLIAM EDEN, 1st lord Auckland, eminent for his diplomatic services, was created baron Auckland, in Ireland, 18 Nov. 1789, and a peer of Great Britain, by the title of baron Auckland, of West Auckland, co. Durham, 22 May 1793; m., 26 Sept. 1776, Eleanor, 2d da. of the right hon. sir Gilbert Eliot, and sister to Gilbert, 1st earl of Minto, and by her (who d. 18 May 1818) had issue,

GEORGE-WILLIAM LYTTELTON, LORD LYTTELTON, Baron

of Frankley, co. Worcester, Baron Westcote, of Balamare, in Ireland, and a Baronet; born 31 March 1817; succeeded his father William-Henry, late lord, 30 April 1837.

THE family of Lyttelton, is of great antiquity in the counties of Worcester and Salop. THOMAS DE LYTTELTON, was of South Lyttelton, co. Worcester, temp. Henry III. His grandson, THOMAS LYTTELTON, d. 1422, leaving an only da. and heiress, ELIZABETH, who m. Thomas Westcote, on which marriage it was conditioned that her issue should assume the name of Lyttelton. Her eldest son, sir THOMAS LYTTELTON, was a judge of the Common Pleas, temp. Edward IV., and author of the celebrated Treatise on "Tenures." Sixth in lineal descent from him was

Sir THOMAS LYTTELTON, of Frankley, M.P. for co. Worcester, distinguished for his fidelity to king Charles I.; created a bart. 25 July 1618, m. Catherine, da. and heiress to sir Thomas Crompton, of Hounslow, co. Middlesex, by whom he had issue, 12 sons and 4 das., of whom 5 sons and 3 das. d. young; the survivors were,
