FLETCHER NORTON, LORD GRANTLEY, Baron of Markenfield, co. York, High Steward of Guildford; born Oct. 1795; succeeded his uncle, William, late lord, 12 Nov. 1822; married, 26 July 1825, CharlotteEarle, youngest da. of sir William Beechey, of Harley Street, knt.

THE family of NORTON is descended from a branch of the noble house of Conyers. Sir John Conyers, otherwise NORTON, of NORTON-CONYERS, was sheriff co. York, 1507; his grandson, RICHARD NORTON, of Norton-Conyers, was attainted 1569, being engaged in the insurrection of the earls of Westmorland and Northumberland; he m. Susan, da. of Richard Neville, lord Latimer, from whom descended, in the 7th degree, Thomas Norton, of Grantley, co. York, father of THOMAS NORTON of Grantley, who d. 1719, leaving 3 sons, the eldest of whom,

Sir FLETCHER NORTON, was, 9 April 1782, created lord Grantley, baron of Markenfield, co. York, b. 23 Jan. 1716; being bred to the law, he was, Dec. 1761, appointed solicitor-gen., and received the honour of knighthood while holding that office. In Nov. 1763, he was made attorney-gen.; and 1769, appointed chief justice in Eyre south of Trent; 1770, was chosen speaker of the house of commons, in which station he continued till 1780; and was advanced to the peerage, 9 April 1782; m., 21 May 1741, Grace, da. of sir William Chapple, knt., one of the judges of the court of King's Bench, by whom (who d. 30 Oct. 1803) he left issue,

GEORGE RODNEY, BARON RODNEY, of Rodney-Stoke, co. Somerset, and a Baronet, D. C. L.; Lord-Lieutenant co. His lordship is descended from a younger branch of a family of Rodney, which was seated at Rodney-Stoke, and other places in the county of Somerset, as early as the time of Maud the empress; the elder line of which ended in co-heiresses about the middle of the 17th century.

GEORGE THYNNE, BARON CARTERET, of Hawnes, co. Bedford, P.C.; born 23 Jan. 1770; succeeded his uncle, Henry-Frederick, late baron, 17 June 1826; married, 12 May 1797, Harriet, da. of William, 2d viscount Courtenay, by whom (who d. 13 April 1836) his lordship has no

issue.

HENRY-FREDERICK THYNNE, 2d son of Thomas, 2d viscount Weymouth, by Louisa, da. of John, earl Granville, (see marquess of BATH,) inherited the estates of his maternal grandfather, and took the surname of CARTERET, by act of parliament, 1776. He was created, 29 Jan. 1784, baron Carteret, with remainder to the 2d and other younger sons of his brother, the 1st marquess of Bath. His lordship d. unm. 17 June 1826, aged 91, and was succeeded, according to the limitation of the patent, by his nephew,

WILLIAM NOEL-HILL, BARON BERWICK, of Attingham, co. Salop, P.C., F.S.A.; succeeded his brother, Thomas, late lord, 2 Nov. 1832; took the surname of NOEL by royal sign manual, 1824.

THE original name of his lordship's family was Harwood or Whorwood, that of Hill having been recently assumed in consequence of a marriage which will be hereafter stated. At the beginning of the 17th century, a sir EDWARD HARWOOD, or WHORWOOD, knt., distinguished himself as one of the most eminent soldiers of the age; he served with the Veres in the Low Countries, and appears to have been connected with all the great men of his time. His life is published and reprinted in the Harleian Miscellany; and his biographer says of him, that he came of a stock fit to ingraft his future education and excellence upon." He was slain at the seige of Maestricht 1632, and divided his fortune among the children of his brother George, which George was ancestor of Thomas Harwood, (who was in the naval service of his country at the battle of Solebay; and was afterwards seated at Streatly, co. Berks, and was sheriff of that county,) and of

Stafford, (by Henrietta, 3d da. of Thomas Wentworth, 3d earl of Strafford, and at length co-h. with her sisters, lady Lucy Howard and lady Anne Conolly, to her brother, William 4th earl of Strafford,) and by her (who d. 23 March 1797) had issue,
