THE family of IRBY, or IREBY, was of great antiquity in the co. of Lincoln, where the chief branch long flourished, being lords of Irby or Ireby, in Candlesho Wapentake, in the co. of Lincoln, all since conveyed to another family.

Sir WILLIAM DE IREBY, knt., in 1251, 35 Henry III., was witness to the charter of foundation of the abbey of Hales, co. Gloucester, granted by the king's brother, Richard, earl of Cornwall, king of the Romans.

JOHN DE IREBY appears, temp. Edw. III., to be one of the jurors in an inquest taken before the king's escheater, for founding a chantry in Wigton, by John Gernoun and Margaret, his wife, and granting it with the advowson of the church to the abbey of Holmeulbrum, co. Cumberland.

ROBERT IRBY, or IREBY, of Laceby, co. Lincoln, m. one of the das. and co-hh. of Herbert Flynton, esq., (by his wife, one of the das. and co-hh. of Walter de la Lynde, lord of Laceby and Bulbrooke, co. Sussex,) by whom he had issue, ROBERT, who m. Jane, da. of sir John Lowdham, knt., by whom he had issue, BENNET IREBY, esq., who m. a da. of sir Robert Gamsby, knt., and had issue, John and Alice, and

ROBERT IREBY, esq., the eldest son, m. Jane, da. of Thomas Thimbelby, of Pollam, co. Lincoln, esq., by whom he had Thomas, who d. without issue, and

ANTHONY IREBY, or IRBY, esq., who was seated at Gosterston, co. Lincoln, and d. 21 June 1552; he m. Alice, da. of John Bountaine, esq., and by her had issue, Leonard, who was M.P. for Boston, co. Lincoln, from the 1st of queen Mary to 6 Phil. and Mary, and again in 5th and 13th Eliz. 1563 and 1571; and THOMAS, seated at Whapload, co. Lincoln, m. Elizabeth Serjeant, and was father of

ANTHONY IRBY, esq., who served in parliament for the borough of Boston, in the 31st, 39th, and 43d years of Elizabeth,

and also in the 1st of king James I. Hem. Alice Tash, widow, da. of Thomas Welbye, esq., of Moulton, co. Lincoln; she was buried at Whapload, in the same county, 21 April 1602, and he d. 6 Oct. 1625, leaving issue, besides other children,

Sir ANTHONY IRBY, recorder of Boston, co. Lincoln, was appointed high sheriff co. Lincoln 1637; he represented the borough of Boston in parliament, 1639 and 1640, and the 8th, 11th, 15th, 30th, and 31st Charles II.; he m. 4 wives, 1st, 1623, Frances, da. of sir William Wray, of Glentworth, co. Lincoln, bart., and had issue,

1. ELIZABETH, m., 1645, the hon. George Montagu, of Horton, co. Northampton, eldest son and h. of Henry, earl of Manchester, (by his 3d wife, Margaret, da. of John Crouch, esq.,) and was mother of Charles, 1st earl of Halifax, and other children; she d. 9 Feb. 1684.

HENRY FOX, 1st lord Holland, was younger brother of Stephen Fox, 1st earl of Ilchester, (see EARL of ILCHESTER,) and 2d and youngest son, by the 2d marriage, of sir Stephen Fox, knt. His lordship was appointed, 1737, surveyor-general of the board of works; 1743, a commissioner of the treasury: 1746, secretary at war, and sworn of the privy council; 1755, lord justice during his majesty's intended absence in Germany; and Nov. in the same year, secretary of state; 1757, paymaster-gen. of the forces, and clerk of the pells in Ireland; created baron Holland, of Foxley, co. GEORGE-CHARLES PRATT, (commonly called Earl of BRECKNOCK,) BARON CAMDEN, of Camden Place, co. Kent; born 2 May 1799; summoned to parliament by writ, 8 Jan. 1835, and placed in his father's barony of Camden, of Camden Place; married, 27 Aug. 1835, Harriet, eldest da. of the right rev. George Murray, D.D., bishop of Rochester, and has issue. (See MARQUESS CAMDEN.)

GEORGE-WILLIAM CAMPBELL, BARON SUNDRIDGE, of Comb-Bank, co. Kent, and Lord Hamilton, of Hameldon, co. Leicester, in right of his mother. His lordship is also Duke of Argyll in Scotland; born 22 Sept. 1768.

EDWARD-WILLIAM HARVEY - HAWKE, LORD HAWKE, Baron of Towton, co. York; born 15 July 1799; succeeded his father, Edward, the late lord, 29 Nov. 1824; married, 2 Aug. 1821, Elizabeth, da. of sir John Ramsden, bart., by whom (who d. 26 Aug. 1824) he had no issue.

EDWARD HAWKE, of Lincoln's Inn, barrister-at-law, his lordship's ancestor, m. Elizabeth Bladen, relict of col. Ruthven, da. of Nathaniel Bladen, esq., (son of the rev. dr. Bladen, by the hon. Sarah Blayney, da. of Henry, 2d lord Blayney,) and sister of col. Martin Bladen, of Abbery Hatch, co. Essex, successively M.P. for Stockbridge, Malden, and Portsmouth, a lieut.-col. in the army under the duke of Marlborough, comptroller of the Mint, 1714, and a lord of trade and plantations, by whom he had issue, 1. EDWARD, 1st lord, and 2. Frances, m. Henry Maul, son of Henry Maul, bishop of Dromore.

Sir EDWARD HAWKE, K.B., 1st lord Hawke, was from his youth brought up to the sea; was promoted to be rear-adm. of the white, 1747, in which year he gained a signal victory over the French fleet in the West Indies, and was, on his return to England, made a K.B.; in 1748, he was made vice-adm. of the blue; and in 1755, viceadm. of the white; 1765, he was appointed vice-adm. of Great Britain, and 1st lord of the admiralty; and 1776, raised to the dignity of the peerage by the title of Baron Hawke, of Towton, co. York. His lordship was b. 11

March 1716, m. Catherine, da. and sole h. of Walter Brooke, of Burton Hall, co. York, esq., and by her (who d. 28 Oct. 1756) had issue,

1. MARTIN-BLADEN, 2d lord.

2. EDWARD, b. Dec. 1746, d. unm. 2 Oct. 1773.

3. CHALONER, b. 1750, d. unm. by a fall from his horse, 17 Sept. 1777.

4. CATHERINE, b. 1752.

His lordship d. 17 Oct. 1781, and was succeeded by his only surviving son,

MARTIN-BLADEN, 2d lord, b. 20 April 1744, m., 6 Feb. 1771, Cassandra, youngest da. of sir Edward Turner, of Ambrosden, co. Oxford, bart., and sister to Elizabeth, lady Say and Sele, and by her (who d. 19 Nov. 1813) had issue,

1. EDWARD-HARVEY, 3d lord.

2. MARTIN-BLADEN-EDWARD, b. 1 April 1777, m., 18 March 1815,-, da. of Thomas Nisbet, of Mersington, esq., and by her (who d. Aug. 1824) had issue.

3. CASSANDRA-JULIA, b. 16 Jan. 1772, m., 1st, 15 July 1793, Samuel Estwicke, of Barbadoes, esq.; 2dly, Sept. 1800, the rev. Stephen Sloane, youngest son of col. Hans Sloane, M.P. for Southampton; and 3dly,
