THE family of Byron appears to have held large possessions in Yorkshire, as early as the time of William the Conqueror, and soon after became possessed of the lordship of Clayton, co. Lancaster. Sir John Byron of Clayton, knt., obtained a grant of the abbey of Newstead, co. Notts, from king Henry VIII.

SIR JOHN BYRON, distinguished by his loyalty and services to king Charles I., was by that king created, 24 Oct. 1643, baron Byron, of Rochdale, co. Lancaster, with limitation of the title, on failure of his issue male, to his brothers, Richard, William, Robert, Gilbert, and Philip. He was fieldmarshal of the counties of Worcester, Salop, Chester, and North Wales, and governor of Chester, which he bravely defended against the parliamentary forces, 1645. He was also tutor to the duke of York, afterwards king James II., and dying without issue, 1652, was succeeded by his next brother,

WILLIAM, 4th lord, d. 8 Aug. 1736, and was succeeded by his son,

His lordship had the misfortune to kill William Chaworth, esq., in a duel, 26 Jan. 1765, for which he was tried by his peers in Westminster Hall, 13 Feb. 1765, and found guilty of manslaughter, 119 of the peers voting him guilty, and the remaining 4 not guilty. His lordship claimed the benefit of the statute of Edward VI., which their lordships were pleased to allow, and he was discharged accordingly, on paying his fees. His lordship m., 28 March 1747, Elizabeth, da. of Charles Shaw, of Besthorpe Hall, co. Norfolk, esq., and by her (who d. 5 July 1788) had issue,

WILLIAM WARD, BARON WARD, of Birmingham, born 27 March 1817, succeeded his father, William Humble, late lord, 6 Dec. 1835.

HIS lordship's ancestor, HUMBLE WARD, (son and heir of William Ward, an eminent goldsmith of London,) m. Frances Sutton, in her own right baroness DUDLEY, grandda. and sole heiress of Edward, lord Dudley, and was created, by Charles I., baron Ward, of Birmingham, 23 March 1644. The issue of lord Ward, by Frances, baroness Dudley, were EDWARD, who succeeded to the baronies of Dudley and Ward; and William, ancestor of the present baron.

EDWARD WARD, lord Dudley and Ward, d. 1701, having survived his mother a few months only. He was succeeded by his grandson,

EDWARD, lord Dudley and Ward, d. 24 March 1704, and was succeeded by a posthumous son, EDWARD, lord Dudley and Ward, who was succeeded, 1731, by his uncle, WILLIAM, on whose death, 21 May 1740, without issue, the baronies of Dudley and Ward became separated. The title of Dudley, being a barony in fee, devolved upon FERDINANDO-DUDLEY LEA, esq., his sister's son, upon whose death, 1757, the barony fell in abeyance among his sisters. The barony of Ward devolved to the heir male, JOHN WARD, 6th lord Ward, grandson of the hon. William Ward, youngest son of Humble Ward, the 1st lord Ward.

HUGH-CHARLES CLIFFORD, BARON CLIFFORD, of Chudleigh, co. Devon; born 29 May 1790; succeeded his father, 29 April 1831; married, at Paris, 31 Aug. 1818, and afterwards at Ugbrooke, 9 Jan. 1819, Mary-Lucy, only da. of Thomas Weld, of Lulworth Castle, co. Dorset, (afterwards a cardinal,) and by her (who d. June 1831,) had issue, CHARLES-HUGH, b. 27 July 1819; 2. WILLIAM; -3. HENRY; -4. CONSTANTIUS;5. and 6. Two other CHILDREN.

THIS family is descended from a younger (but now the eldest remaining male) branch of the great house of Clifford, lords Clifford and earls of Cumberland, so celebrated by antiquaries and historians, and claiming a direct male descent from Richard, duke of Normandy, grandfather of King William the Conqueror. Early in the 15th century, sir Lewis Clifford, 3d son of Roger, baron de Clifford, settled at Ugbrooke, near Chudleigh, co. Devon; 8th in descent from him
