HENRY-PEYTO VERNEY, BARON WILLOUGHBY DE BROKE, succeeded his brother, John, the late lord, 1 Sept. 1820; born 5 April 1773; married, March 1829, Margaret, 3d da. of sir John Williams, bart.

ROBERT DE WILLOUGHBY de Broke, chevalier, was summoned to parliament by writ, dated 12 Aug., 7 Henry VII., and was succeeded by his son and h., Robert, 2d baron, who d. 1521, without surviving male issue, leaving Elizabeth, his grandda. and h., wife of sir Fulke Greville. From this time the title remained dormant till 1695, when it was claimed by sir Richard Verney, as grandson and h. of Margaret Verney, who was grandda. and h. of the above-named Elizabeth Greville, and the claim being allowed, the said

Sir RICHARD VERNEY was summoned to parliament, and took his seat accordingly, as 3d lord Willoughby de Broke; he d. 1711, aged 91, and was succeeded by his only surviving son,

Stafford, (commonly called Earl of UXBRIDGE,) eldest son of the marquess of Anglesey; summoned to parliament by writ 15 Jan. 1833, and placed in his father's barony of Paget, of Beaudesert, a Lord in waiting to her Majesty; born 6 July 1797; married, 1st, 5 Aug. 1819, Eleanora, 2d da. of John Campbell, of Shawfield, esq., and by her (who d. 3 July 1828) had issue, -1. ST.-ANDREW-BEAUCHAMP ST. JOHN, BARON ST. JOHN, of Bletshoe, and a Baronet; born 8 Nov. 1811; succeeded his father, St. Andrew, the late lord, 15 Oct. 1817; married, 12 March 1838, Eleanor, 2d da. of vice-admiral sir Richard-Hussey Hussey, of Wood Walton, K.C.B.

SIR OLIVER ST. JOHN m. Margaret, sister and sole h. of John Beauchamp, of Bletshoe, (whose grandfather, Roger de Beauchamp, had summons to parliament, from 37 E. III. to 3 R. II.,) and had with her the lordship of Bletshoe. He was father, by her, of sir JOHN ST. JOHN, ancestor of the present baron, and of sir Oliver St. John, who was seated at Lydiard Tregoze, and from whom the viscounts Bolingbroke and St. John are descended. (See that title.)

Sir OLIVER ST. JOHN, great grandson of sir John above named, was created by patent, 13 Jan., 1 Eliz. 1558, baron St. John, of Bletshoe, and d. 1582, leaving issue, 1. ST. JOHN, 2d baron, whose only da. and h., Anne, m. William, lord Howard, of Effingham; and 2. OLIVER, 3d baron.

OLIVER, 3d baron, had 7 sons and as many das., but only 2 of his sons left male issue, viz. sir OLIVER, the eldest, and sir ROWLAND, K.B., the 5th, of whom hereafter.

Sir OLIVER, 4th baron St. John, was created, 28 Dec. 1624, earl of Bolingbroke, he d. 1646, having survived all his children; and his eldest son, Oliver, having died without male issue, he was succeeded by his

grandson, (son of his 2d son, sir Paulet,)

OLIVER, 2d earl and 5th baron, who d. s.p. 1688, and was succeeded by his only brother, PAULET, 3d earl and 6th baron, on whose death in 1711, the earldom became extinct; but the barony devolved on Paulet-St.-Andrew St. John, great-great-grandson of sir Rowland, 2d son of the 3d lord, to whom we now return.

Sir ROWLAND ST. JOHN was father of sir Oliver St. John, who was created a bart. 28 June 1660, m. Barbara, da. and h. of John St. Andrew, of Goatham, co. Notts, esq., and had issue,

Essex, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Lisbon; succeeded to this barony on the death of his great grandfather, Frederick Hervey, 4th earl of Bristol, and lord bishop of Derry, 8 July 1803; born 5 June 1799; married, 8 Nov. 1828, lady Lucy Bentinck, da. of the duke of Portland, and has, - 1. ELIZA-HARRIETT, b. 19 Aug. 1829, d. 2 Oct. 1830; 2. FREDERICK-GEORGE, b. 9 Aug. 1830; 3. HARRIETT-GEORGIANA, b. 3 Sept. 1831;-4. A SON; b. 22 July 1835;— -5. Lucy, b. 2, and d. 6 July 1837.

LORD THOMAS HOWARD, 2d son of Thomas Howard, 4th duke of Norfolk, but eldest son, by his 2d wife, Margaret, da. and h. of Thomas, lord Audley of Walden, (who had been so created by patent, 29 Nov. 1538, was also lord chancellor and K.G., and d. without issue male 1544,) was summoned to parliament by writ, 24 Oct. 1597, as baron Howard de Walden, and was, in 1603, created earl of Suffolk (see that title). His grandson and heir,

JAMES, 3d earl of Suffolk, d. without issue male, 1688, and was succeeded in the earldom by his next brother, George, but the barony of Howard, of Walden, fell into abeyance between his 2 das., Essex, wife of Edward, lord Griffin, and Elizabeth, wife of sir Thomas Felton, bart., and so continued till, in 1784, the abeyance was determined in favour of

Sir JOHN-GRIFFIN GRIFFIN, K.B., who was then h. of the body of lady Essex, the eldest co-h., viz. son and h. of William Whitwell, esq., by Anne, youngest sister and co-h. (but only one who left issue) of Edward, 3d lord Griffin, who was son and h. of James, 2d lord Griffin, son and h. of Edward, lord Griffin, and lady Essex Howard. Sir JOHN GRIFFIN, who had taken the name of Griffin by act of parliament, 1749, had summons to parliament as baron Howard de Walden 1784, and was, in 1788, created baron Braybrooke, with remainder

to Richard-Aldworth Neville, esq. (see baron Braybrooke.) He d. without issue, 25 May 1797, leaving an only surviving sister, Mary, wife of rev. William Parker, D.D., on whose death, in 1799, the whole issue of the body of lady Essex Howard became extinct, and the barony of Howard de Walden devolved on

FREDERICK HERVEY, 4th earl of Bristol, who was last surviving grandson and h. of the body of John, 1st earl of Bristol, and of Elizabeth, his wife, only child and h. of lady Elizabeth Felton, 2d da. and co-h. of the earl of Suffolk. The earl of Bristol m. Elizabeth, da. of sir Jermyn Davers, bart., by whom he had, besides other issue, John-Augustus, lord Hervey, m. Elizabeth Drummond, and d. in his father's lifetime, 1796, leaving an only da. and h., Elizabeth-Catherine - Caroline, d. 21 Jan. 1803, having m., 2 Aug. 1798, Charles-Rose Ellis, esq., who was created, 1826, baron Seaford, (see that title,) and had issue, 1. CHARLES-AUGUSTUS, present lord; 2. Augustus-Frederick, b. 1800, lieut.-col. 60th foot, m., 25 June 1828, Mary Frances Thurlow, eldest da. of sir David Cunynghame, of Milncraig, bart. of N.S., and had a son, d. 8 Dec. 1830; and 3. Eliza-Georgiana-Caroline, b. 3 July 1802, d. 18 Aug. 1820. The earl d. 8 July 1803, having survived both his eldest son and his grandda., and was succeeded in the earldom by his next surviving

son, Frederick-William, and in the barony of Howard, of Walden, by his great-grandson,

CHARLES-AUGUSTUS, present lord, whose claim to this barony was confirmed by a resolution of the house of lords, 10 March 1807.

Crest-On a mount vert a goat's head argent.

Supporters-Two lions argent, each charged on the neck with three trefoils slipped vert, within a collar gemel, gules. Motto-Non quo, sed quomodo. Not by whom, but in what manner.
