CHARLES-JOHN CANNING, VISCOUNT CANNING, of Kilbrahan, co. Kilkenny; a ranger of the New Forest, Hampshire; born 14 Dec. 1812,

succeeded his mother, Joan, Viscountess Canning, 15 March 1837; married, 5 Sept. 1835, Charlotte, da. of Charles, lord Stuart de Rothesay.

THE family of Canning was seated as early as temp. Henry VI. at Foxcote, co. Warwick, where the elder branch still continues. GEORGE CANNING, 4th son of Richard Canning, of Foxcote, went over to Ireland at the commencement of the 17th century, and settled at Garvagh, co. Londonderry, of which manor he had a grant from Queen Elizabeth. He d. about 1646, leaving issue, WILLIAM, who was father of George, father of

HENRY-WILLIAM FITZGERALD-DE ROS, BARON DE ROS, born 12 June 1793, succeeded his mother, Charlotte, late Baroness, 9 Jan. 1831.

DESCENT OF THE BARONY OF ROS. ROBERT DE ROS was summoned to parliament among the barons by writ, 49th Henry III., 1264; from whom descended EDMUND, lord Ros, whose sister, Eleanor, the representative and h. of this baronial family, m. sir ROBERT MANNERS, knt., and had issue, GEORGE, who, in right of his mother, succeeded as lord Ros, and became possessed of Belvoir Castle, and other large possessions, m. Anne, sole h. of sir Thomas St. Leger, knt., by Anne, duchess of Exeter, eldest sister of king Edward IV., and had issue, THOMAS MANNERS, lord Ros, who was created earl of Rutland 1525; from him the barony descended to EDWARD, 3d earl of Rutland, who left a da. and h. ELIZABETH, m. MARY-FRANCES-ELIZABETH STAPLETON, BARONESS LE

DESPENCER, born 24 March 1822, succeeded her grandfather, Thomas, late baron, 1 Oct. 1831.

HUGH LE DESPENCER, justiciar of England, was summoned to parliament, 49 Henry III., 1264. His son,

HUGH, lord LE DESPENCER, was created earl of Winchester in 1322, but was beheaded 1326, together with his son, HUGH, lord Despencer, commonly styled earl of Gloucester from having married Eleanor, sister and co-h. of Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester and Hertford. THOMAS, lord le Despencer, grandson of Hugh, styled earl of Gloucester, was created, in 1398, earl of Gloucester; he was beheaded in 1400;-lady Isabella, his only da. and h., m. Richard Beauchamp, earl of Warwick, whose only da., Elizabeth, carried the baronies of Le Despencer and Abergavenny to EDWARD NEVILLE, 4th son of Ralph, earl of Westmoreland. From him they descended to HENRY NEVILLE, lord Abergavenny, who d. 1589; on his death the inheritance of the baronies was contested between his only da., MARY, wife of sir Thomas Fane, knt., and his cousin and h. male, Edward Neville, esq., when king James I. was pleased to separate the two baronies and confirm that of Abergavenny to the heir male, and that of Le Despencer to lady Fane. From her it descended to her son and h., sir FRANCIS FANE, who was, 1624, created earl of Westmoreland, and from him to THOMAS FANE, 7th earl of Westmoreland, who d. without issue, 1762, when the earldom went to the male heir, but the barony fell into abeyance between the heirs of his two sisters, lady Mary Dashwood and

lady Catharine Paul. Sir FRANCIS DASHWOOD, bart., was summoned as lord le Despencer, 1763, as son and h. of lady Mary, the eldest co-h. His lordship d. without issue, 9 Dec. 1781, when the barony again fell into abeyance between his sister, Rachael, relict of Sir Robert Austen, bart., and the heirs of lady Catharine Paul. Lady Austen d. without issue, 1788, when the barony devolved to sir THOMAS STAPLETON, as sole h. of lady Catharine Paul, second co-h. of John, 7th earl of Westmoreland, which lady Catharine m. William Paul, of Braywick, co. Berks, esq., and d. 25 Sept. 1737, leaving an only da., Catharine Paul, m. sir William Stapleton, co. Oxford, bart., and d. 27 June 1753, leaving issue. William, d. unm.; sir THOMAS, who succeeded; and Catharine, m. sir James Wright, of Wray House, co. Essex, bart.

Sir THOMAS STAPLETON, only surviving son, succeeded his father, sir William, of Gray's Court, co. Oxford, bart., b. 27 Feb. 1727, m., 27 Nov. 1765, Mary, da. of Henry Fane, of Wormsley, co.
