JOHN-ROBERT TOWNSHEND, VISCOUNT SYDNEY, of St. Leonard's, co. Gloucester, and Baron Sydney, of Chiselhurst, co. Kent; born 9 Aug. 1805; succeeded his father, John-Thomas, late viscount, 20 Jan. 1831; married, 4 Aug. 1832, lady Emily-Caroline Paget, da. of the marquess of Anglesey.

THOMAS TOWNSHEND (3d son of Charles, 2d viscount Townshend, by Elizabeth, his wife, only surviving da. of Thomas, lord Pelham, of Laughton, who was son and heir of sir John Pelham, bart., and of Lucy, his wife, da. of Robert Sydney, 2d earl of Leicester) was one of the tellers of the exchequer, m., 2 May 1730, Albinia, da. of colonel John Selwyn, of Matson, co. Sir SAMUEL HOOD, 1st viscount Hood, G.C.B., entered early in the R. N., made a post-captain 22 July 1756; in 1759, for his bravery in capturing the Bellona frigate, he had the honour of being introduced to his majesty king George III., by lord Anson; created a bart. of Great Britain, 19 May 1778, and, in the same year, commissioner of Portsmouth dockyard; in 1780, promoted to the rank of admiral; received the public thanks of the kingdom for his gallant conduct in the West Indies, as an admiral, in the engagement with the French fleet under Count de Grasse, who was defeated, and taken prisoner, 1782; created a peer of Ireland, 12 Sept. the same year, by the title of baron Hood, of Catherington; and a peer of Great Britain, 1 June 1796, by the title of viscount Hood, of Whitley, co. Warwick; the viscount m., 15 Aug. 1749, Susannah, da. of Edward Lindzee, of Portsmouth, esq., who was created a peeress of Great Britain in her own right by the title of baroness Hood, of Catherington, co. Hants, 27 March 1795, and had issue by her, (who d. 25 May 1806,) Samuel and Thomas, who both d. young: and HENRY, 2d viscount. The viscount d. 27 Jan. 1816, and was succeeded by his only son,

Stafford, succeeded his uncle, John, earl St. Vincent, in the viscounty, 13 March 1823; took the surname and arms of JERVIS only instead of his paternal name of Ricketts, by royal sign manual, 7 May 1823; married, 1st, 29 Jan. 1790, Mary-Cassandra, da. of Thomas Twisleton, lord Say and Sele, and had issue, 1. JOHN JERVIS, earl of St. Vincent, was b. at Meaford, 9 Jan. 1734, entered the navy at the early age of 10 years, and obtained the rank of post-captain, 13 Oct. 1760. In 1782, on account of the well-known action between his ship and the Pegase, French 74, he received the order of the Bath. In 1797, with a fleet of 15 sail of the line only, he engaged and totally defeated the Spanish fleet, consisting of 27 sail, 7 of which carried from 112 to 130 guns each, and was immediately elevated to the peerage, by the titles of baron Jervis of Meaford, and earl of St. Vincent, by patent 23 June 1797, taking this latter title from the cape of that name, near which he had achieved his glorious victory.

In 1801, he was appointed 1st lord of the admiralty, and 27 April in that year, was created viscount St. Vincent, with remainder to his two nephews, William-Henry Ricketts, and Edward-Jervis Ricketts, and the heirs male of their bodies successively, and failing such, to his niece, Mary, countess of Northesk, and the heirs male of her body. His lordship, at the time of his death, was admiral of the fleet, and general of the marines. He m., 5 June 1783, Martha, da. of sir Thomas Parker, lord chief baron, but by her (who d. 8 Feb. 1816) had no issue. His lordship d. 13 March 1823, aged 89, when the titles of earl of St. Vincent and baron Jervis became extinct, and his elder nephew having died without male issue, before him, the viscounty devolved on his 2d nephew, EDWARD JERVIS, present and 2d vis

SIR HUGH DE DUNDAS, who d. in the reign of king Robert Bruce, is often mentioned as companion of sir William Wal

lace, in defence of his country; the lands of Dundas had been possessed by his ancestors as early as 1124, at which time, Weldere, said

to be son of Cospatrick, earl of Northumberland, gave those lands to his nephew, Helias, son of his brother, Hutred. These lands, with the original charter, are still in the possession of the elder branch of the Dundas family (see Baron DUNDAS).

Sir JAMES DUNDAS, of Arniston, one of the senators of the college of justice, and M.P. co. Edinburgh, who d. 1679, was the immediate ancestor of the present viscount, and also of the late sir David Dundas, K.B., commander-in-chief of the forces, and of the present sir David Dundas, of Beechwood, bart. (See Debrett's New Baronetage). His grandson,

HENRY DUNDAS, 1st viscount Melville, baron of Dunira, was appointed lord-advocate of Scotland 1775; secretary of state for the home department 1791; from 1792 to 1801, president of the board of control for the affairs of India; from 1794 to 1801, secretary of state for the war department; from 1783 to 1801, treasurer of the navy; created viscount Melville 1802; first lord of the admiralty 1807.-The viscount was impeached, in 1805, by the house of commons, and after a solemn trial in Westminster Hall, was acquitted by his peers; b. 28 April 1739, m., 1st, Elizabeth, da. of David Rennie, of Melville Castle, esq., and by her had issue,
