THOMAS HOWARD, 2d duke of Norfolk, m., 2dly, Agnes, da. of Hugh, and sister and sole h. of sir Philip Tilney, knt., had a son, WILLIAM HOWARD, who was, 15 March 1553, created baron Howard, of Effingham, co. Surrey; he was lord-high-adm. of England, lieut.-gen. and commander of the fleet and army, K.G.; had, besides other issue, two sons, CHARLES, his successor, and sir William, of whom hereafter; d. 2 Jan. 1573, and was succeeded by his eldest son, CHARLES, K.G., who was created, 22 Oct. 1596, earl of Nottingham, and d. 1624, leaving issue by his 1st wife a son, CHARLES, 2d earl, who d. s.p. 1642; and by his 2d wife another son, CHARLES, 3d earl, on whose death, in 1681, the earldom became extinct, but the barony of Howard, of Effingham, devolved on FRANCIS, son and h. of sir Charles Howard, who was son and h. of sir Francis, 2d, but only son who left issue, of sir William Howard, 2d son of the 1st lord above mentioned.

Sir Charles Howard, by Frances, da. of sir George Courthope, of Wyleigh, co. Sussex, knt., had issue, 1. Francis, 5th lord; 2. George, of whom hereafter.

FRANCIS, 5th lord, was Governor of Virginia, and d. 1695, leaving issue two sons, 1. THOMAS, 6th lord, who d. without issue male 1725; and 2. FRANCIS, 7th lord, created, 8 Dec. 1731, earl of Effingham, and d. 1743, leaving an only son, THOMAS, 2d earl, d. 19 Nov. 1763, leaving issue two sons,

1. THOMAS, 3d earl, who d. s.p. 15 Nov. 1791; and 2. RICHARD, 4th earl, who also d. s.p. 11 Dec. 1816, and on his death the earldom of Effingham became extinct, but the barony of Howard, of Effingham, devolved on the present earl of Effingham, whose descent we now proceed to trace.

GEORGE HOWARD, above mentioned, 2d brother of Francis, 5th lord, was of Bookham, in Surrey, m. Anne, da. of Thomas Kidder, of Lewes, co. Sussex, and d. 13 Dec. 1684, leaving an only son,

SIR EDMUND ANDERSON, knt., descended of Scotch ancestry, was lord chief justice of the court of Common Pleas 1572, which office he held upwards of 26 years; he m. Magdalene, da. of Nicholas Smith, esq., and d. 11 Aug. 1605, having had issue, 1. Edward, d. without issue; 2. sir FRANCIS, ancestor of the earl of YARBOROUGH; 3. William, whose only son, sir Edmund Anderson, of Broughton, co. Lincoln, was created a bart. 11 Dec. 1660, which title is now enjoyed by his descendant, the rev. sir Charles-John Anderson, the present and 7th bart.

SIR THOMAS COKE, of Mauntby, lord of Dudlington, co. Norfolk, temp. Edw. III., had issue 3 sons, 1. Sir Thomas; 2. Peter; and 3. John of Whitwell, the latter of whom continued the line; his son John Coke, of Crosswick, esq., had two sons, William, who d. s.p., and Robert Coke, of Ryston, who by Agnes, da. and h. of Roger Crispin, esq., was father of John of Ryston, who by Alice, da. and co-heiress of William Forleard, of Sparham, co. Norfolk, esq., had issue, Robert Coke, of Sparham, who m. Anne, da. of Wodehouse, co. Norfolk, and had issue, Robert Coke, of Mileham, living 35 Hen. VIII. He d. Nov. 1561, leaving by Winifred, da. and coheiress of William Knightley, of Moregrave Knightley, co. Norfolk, esq., (who d. Jan. 1569,)

The celebrated sir Edward Coke, of Holkham, who was born at Mileham; in his younger years was recorder of Norwich and London, next solicitor-general to Queen

Elizabeth, and speaker of the house of commons the 35th of that reign, afterwards attorney-general to the queen, as also to king James I., who constituted him lord chief justice of both benches successively, and one of his privy council. He was also recorder of Coventry, and high steward of the University of Cambridge, whereof he had been a member in Trinity College; he died at Stoke Poges, co. Bucks, 3 Sept. 1634, æt. 82, having m., 1st, Bridget, da. and co-heiress of John Paston, of Huntingfield Hall, co. Suffolk, esq., and had issue,

ROBERT COKE, esq., of Thurrington aforesaid, who, upon the decease of his cousin, (the son of his great uncle, John,) inherited the Holkham estate; he m. Anne, da. of Thomas, 1st duke of Leeds, and d. 16 Jan. 1679, leaving an only son,

Supporters-On either side, an ostrich argent, that on the dexter gorged with a ducal coronet, per pale gules and azure, line reflexed over the back of the first; that on the sinister gorged with a like coronet, per pale azure and gules, and line reflexed over the back azure.

Motto-Prudens, qui patiens. He is prudent who is patient.

WILLIAM KING, EARL of LOVELACE, Viscount Ockham of Ockham, and Baron of Ockham, co. John Hale, and by her (who d, 18 April 1834, æt. 65) has issue,
