Sir JAMES HARRIS, 1st earl of Malmesbury, b. 9 April 1746, was appointed, 1771, minister plenipotentiary to Spain; 1776, he

was ambassador to Russia; 1783, and again in 1788, he was envoy extraordinary to the Hague; 1796 and 1797, he went ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary for negotiating a peace with France. In 1779, he was invested with the order of the Bath; created a peer of Great Britain, 19 Sept. 1788, by the title of baron Malmesbury, and further advanced, 29 Dec. 1800, to the dignities of earl of Malmesbury and viscount Fitz-Harris, of Heron Court; 1807, appointed lord-lieut. co. Hants, and governor of the Isle of Wight. The earl received his Majesty's permission, 9 May 1791, to bear the Prussian eagle in his arms, and assume the motto allotted to him by the stadtholder, (the same as used by the house of Nassau,) which honourable additions were granted him by the king of Prussia and the prince of Orange, for his distinguished conduct during the commotions in Holland, where he was then ambassador; m., 28 July 1777, Harriet-Mary, younger sister of sir George Amyand, (who, on his marriage with Catherine, da. and sole h. of Velters Cornewall, of Moccas Court, co. Hereford, esq., assumed the name of Cornewall, in the place of that of Amyand, and by her (who d. 20 Aug. 1830) had issue,

Sir CHARLES ERSKINE, son and heir of the 1st sir Charles, was created a bart. of Nova Scotia, 30 April 1666, m. Christian, da. of sir James Dundas, of Arniston, knt., and had issue,

Dumfries, besides ten children, who d. young, two sons,

Sir JOHN ERSKINE, of Alva, 3d bart., succeeded his brother, sir James, 1693, m. Sir HENRY, 5th bart., a lieut.-gen. in the army, and col. of the royal Scots, m., 1761, Janet, da. of Peter Wedderburn, of Chesterhall, esq., and only sister of Alexander, 1st earl of Rosslyn, and d. 9 Aug. 1765, leaving issue by her, (who d. June 1767,) I. JAMES, 2d earl.

ALEXANDER WEDDERBURN, 1st earl of Rosslyn, was eldest son of Peter Wedderburn, of Chesterhall, co. Mid-Lothian, and lord of session, by the title of lord Chesterhall; he was called to the English bar, appointed solicitor-general, 26 Jan. 1771, and attorney-general, 10 June 1778. On the 14th of June 1780, he was created baron Loughborough, of Loughborough, co. Leicester, appointed chief justice of the common pleas, and called to the privy council; 1783, he was appointed first commissioner for keeping the great seal; and, 27 Jan. 1793, lord high chancellor of Great Britain; created by a second patent, 31 Oct. 1795, baron Loughborough, of Loughborough, co. Surrey, with remainders, severally and successively, to sir JAMES-SINCLAIR ERSKINE, bart., and to JOHN ERSKINE, his brother; and by patent, 21 April 1801, earl of Rosslyn, co. MidLothian, to him and the heirs male of his body, with remainder as above. The earl m., 12 Sept. 1782, Charlotte, da. of William, 1st viscount Courtenay, and by her had no issue. The earl d. 3 Jan. 1805, and was succeeded by his nephew,

WILLIAM CRAVEN, EARL of CRAVEN, co. York, Viscount Uffington, and Baron Craven, of Hempstead Marshal, co. Berks; born 18 July 1809; succeeded his father, William, late earl, 30 July 1825; married, 5 Sept. 1835, lady Emily-Mary, 2d da. of James-Walter, earl of Verulam, and has issue,- - 1. A DA., b. SIR WILLIAM CRAVEN, knt., lord mayor of London, 1611, left issue, WILLIAM CRAVEN, celebrated for his gallantry under Gustavus Adolphus, king of Sweden; he was created baron Craven, 1626, and earl of Craven, and viscount Uffington, 1664. By a patent, 11 Dec. 1665, the barony of Craven was limited, in the event of the earl's death without issue, to sir William Craven, greatgrandson of Henry Craven, uncle of the lord mayor; pursuant to which limitation, on the death of the earl, 1697, the barony devolved on

Sir ARTHUR ONSLOW, having m. Mary, da. and co-h. of sir Thomas Foot, bart., alderman of London, succeeded to the title of bart., by virtue of an especial limitation in his father-in-law's patent, and d. 7 Aug. 1668, leaving issue, besides other children, two sons, RICHARD, 1st lord Onslow; and Foot, of whom hereafter.

RICHARD Onslow, eldest son of sir Arthur, was speaker of the house of commons, 1704; chancellor of the exchequer, 1714; and created, 25 June 1716, baron Onslow, of Onslow, with limitation, on failure of his issue male, to that of his uncle Denzill, and his father, sir Arthur, successively.
