The earl d. 20 April 1802, whereupon the barony of North, being a barony in fee, fell into abeyance between his three das., Maria, marchioness of Bute, lady Susan Doyle, and lady Georgiana North, and the latter having dec. unm. in 1835, the house of lords decided, in July 1837, that the said barony was in abeyance between the other two das. and co-hh. In his other titles he was succeeded by his next brother,

Note. These are the supporters used by the earl, but they are those of the barony of North, now in abeyance. The supporters properly belonging to the earl are "two mastiffs proper," which were assigned, in 1683, to his ancestor, Francis, 1st baron Guilford.

THIS family derives its origin from JOHN CORNWALLIS, who was sheriff of London 1378, and d. 1384. His only son, JOHN, settled at Brome, co. Suffolk, which, till the death of the late marquess, continued to be the principal residence of the family. Seventh in lineal descent from this John was FREDERICK, 1st baron Cornwallis, created a bart. 4 May 1627, and advanced to the dignity of baron Cornwallis, of Eye, co. Suffolk, 20 April 1661, m., 1st, Elizabeth, da. of sir John Ashburnham, (ancestor of the earls of Ashburnham,) and had issue,

PHILIP YORKE, 1st earl of Hardwicke, b. 1 Dec. 1690, was the only son of Philip Yorke, of Dover, co. Kent, attorney-atlaw, (who d. 18 June 1721,) by Elizabeth Gibbon, sole da. of Richard Gibbon, gent., and relict of Edward Gibbon, of Westcliffe, co. Kent, esq., from whose brother Matthew descended Edward Gibbon, the historian. His lordship was appointed solicitor-general, Jan. 1719-20; attorney-general, 17 Jan. 1723; chief justice of the King's Bench, and created baron Hardwicke, 23 Nov. 1733; appointed, Feb. 1735-6, lord high chancellor of Great Britain, and 1754, he was created earl of Hardwicke, and viscount Royston. His lordship m. Margaret, da. of Charles Cocks, of the city of Worcester, esq., and of Mary, his wife, eldest sister of the lord chancellor Somers, and by her (who d. 19 Sept. 1761) he had issue,

SIR STEPHEN Fox, the ancestor of the earls of Ilchester and the barons Holland, was distinguished by his attachment and fidelity to king Charles II.; and though the reigning powers at that time tried their utmost endeavours to make him withdraw his allegiance from his exiled master, they found him incorruptible. When the restoration took place, sir Stephen accompanied his royal master to England, and was immediately rewarded with several places of dignity and trust, which he discharged in the most honourable manner. He was likewise sworn of the privy council; and his majesty granted him, out of the royal arms, an augmentation to his paternal coat, viz., in a canton, a fleur-de-lis or, to him and his heirs for ever. These preferments shew how justly he was esteemed by his king and country; but what will endear his memory to the latest posterity is, his being the first projector of the noble design of Chelsea Hospital, having contributed to the expense of it above £13,000. Hed. 28 Oct. 1716, aged 89, having m., 1st, Elizabeth, da. of William Whittle, of Lancashire, and by her (who d. Aug. 1696) had issue, besides 6 sons and 1 da. who d. young,

STEPHEN, 1st earl of 1lchester, was created lord Ilchester, 11 May 1741; and lord 17chester and Stavordale, and baron of Redlynch, co. Somerset, with remainder to his brother, Henry Fox, 3 Jan. 1747; and also, with the same remainder, advanced to the dignity of earl of Ilchester, 5 June 1756. He m., March 1736, Elizabeth, da. of ThomasStrangways Horner, esq., of Mells Park, co. Somerset, by Susannah Strangways, one of the das, and co-hh. of Thomas Strangways, of Melbury, co. Dorset, esq., who, on the death of her sister, Elizabeth, duchess of Hamilton, became the sole heiress of that ancient and opulent family; and pursuant to the provisions of a deed of settlement of her estate, his lordship assumed the name and arms of Strangways. He had issue,
