BERTRAM ASHBURNHAM, EARL of ASHBURNHAM, Viscount St. Asaph, and Baron Ashburnham; born 2 Nov. 1797; succeeded his father, George, late earl, 17 Oct. 1830.

Of this family, which assumed their surname from the town of ASHBURNHAM, CO. Sussex, was PIERS, lord of Ashburnham, whose son, Anchitel, had a son, Bertram, who, temp. king Harold, was sheriff cos. Sussex, Surrey, and Kent, and constable of Dover Castle, which he defended against William the Conqueror. STEPHEN DE ASHBURNHAM was a benefactor to Battle-Abbey. Reginald de Ashburnham held two knight's fees of John, earl of Ewe, temp. Henry II. His descendant, John Ashburnham, was sheriff cos. Surrey and Sussex 1401. grandson Thomas, 1433, had two sons: 1. WILLIAM STANHOPE, 1st earl of Harrington, was great-grandson of sir John Stanhope, of Elvaston, co. Derby, halfbrother of Philip, 1st earl of Chesterfield

(see that title). The earl was, May 1730, appointed secretary of state, and, Sept. 1747, lord-lieutenant of Ireland, a brigadier-general in the army, and ambassador to the

king of Spain. King George II., in consideration of his great services at the negotiations at Seville, was pleased to advance him, 6 Jan. 1730, to the title of baron Harrington, and, 9 Feb. 1742, to the dignity of viscount Petersham and earl of Harrington, m. JOHN-CHARLES WALLOP, EARL of PORTSMOUTH, Viscount Lymington, and Baron Wallop, of Farleigh Wallop, co. Southampton ; born 18 Dec. 1767; succeeded his father, John, the late earl, 16 May 1797; married, 1st, 19 Nov. 1799, the hon. Grace Norton, sister to William, lord Grantley, and by her (who d. 15 Nov. 1813) had no issue; and 2dly, 7 March 1815, Anne, eldest da. of John Hanson, of Bloomsbury Place, which marriage was declared null and void.

THE family of Wallop derive their name from the lordship of Wallop, co. Hants, where they held a knight's fee temp. Henry II., 1154. Richard de Wallop represented the co. Hants in Parliament, 1327. Thomas, his great-grandson, was also a knight of the shire for Hampshire, and obtained the estate of Farley Wallop by marriage with Margaret, da. and co-h. of Nicholas Valaynes, lord of Farley, co. Hants. His lineal descendant, sir John Wallop, served as a captain in the expedition to Brittany, under lord Edward Howard, 4 Henry VIII.; two years afterwards he commanded a fleet sent against the coast of Normandy, where he burnt twenty-one villages and towns; 1533, he was ambassador to France; 1543, elected a K.G. He d. at Guines, 1550, having filled many important situations. His brother, sir Oliver Wallop, was knighted for his bravery at the great battle of Musselborough, 18 Sept. 1547; he was father of sir Henry Wallop, vice treasurer and treasurer of war, in Ireland, and one of the lords justices, 1582; he had the honour of a visit from queen Elizabeth, 1591, at his seat of Farley Wallop, co. Hants, and d. in Dublin, 1599. His grandson, Robert Wallop, of Farley Wallop, was knight of the shire co. Hants, in the first two parliaments of Charles I., and was appointed one of the judges, by the army junto, for the trial of that monarch: he complied so much with their desires as to sit in the painted chamber, but did not sign the warrant for the king's execution; d. in the Tower of London 1667, and his remains were interred at Farley Wallop. He left issue by Anne Wriothesley, da. of Henry, earl of Southampton, an only son, Henry, whose third but eldest surviving son, John, was father of

JOHN WALLOP, 1st earl of Portsmouth, member co. Hants, 1715; a lord of the treasury, 1717; created viscount Lymington, and baron Wallop, of Farley Wallop, 1720; and further advanced to the dignity of earl of Portsmouth, 11 April 1743. The earl m., 1st, 25 May 1716, Bridget, eldest da. of Charles Bennet, 1st earl of Tankerville, by which lady (who d. Oct. 1738) he had issue 6 sons and 4 das., all of whom d. infants, or unm., except the eldest son,

HENRY-RICHARD GREVILLE, EARL BROOKE, and EARL of WARWICK, Baron Brooke, of Beauchamp Court, in Warwickshire, K.T., D.C.L., Lord-Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum co. SIR EDWARD GREVILLE, knighted at the battle of the Spurs, had issue, John, ancestor of the Grevilles of Milcote, and sir Fulke, who m. Elizabeth, sole heiress of the Willoughbys of Brooke, and by her grandmother descended from the old earls of Warwick. Sir Fulke d. 1559, and his grand

Sir FULKE GREVILLE, K.B., was created baron Brooke, of Beauchamp Court, 9 Jan. 1620, remainder to his cousin, Robert Greville; he obtained of James I. a grant of the ruinous castle of Warwick, and d. 20 Sept. 1628, of a wound received by the stab of one Heywood, a servant. His sister, MARGARET GREVILLE, carried the ancient barony of Willoughby de Brooke into the family of VERNEY; but the title of baron Brooke, of Beauchamp Court, devolved on his cousin and heir male,
