JOHN-SAVILE LUMLEY-SAVILE, EARL of SCARBOROUGH, Viscount and Baron Lumley, of Lumley Castle, and Viscount Lumley, in Ireland; born 18 July 1788; succeeded his father, John, the late earl, 21 Feb. 1835; took the surname and arms of Savile, by royal license, 14 Oct. 1836.

LIULPH, lord of Lumley Castle, co. Durham, ancestor of this family, lived in the time of Edward the Confessor. Sir RALPH de Lumley was summoned to parliament 1385. John, lord Lumley, who lived in the reign of Henry VIII., had an only son, George, who, being attainted and beheaded 1535, the barony on the death of the said John became extinct. Sir John Lumley, only son of George, was restored by act of parliament to the barony of Lumley, with limitation to the heirs male of his body, but dying s.p. 1609, the title again became extinct.

Sir RICHARD LUMLEY, 2d cousin and heir male of the last lord, was created, 1628, viscount Lumley, in Ireland, and was succeeded in that title by his grandson,

RICHARD, 2d viscount, was created baron Lumley of Lumley Castle, in 1681, viscount Lumley, in 1689, and earl of Scarborough, in 1690. The earl had a principal command of the troops who gained a victory at King's Sedgemore, co. Somerset, over the duke of Monmouth; m. Frances, da. and h. of sir Henry Jones, by whom (who d. March 1737) he left besides other issue,

THOMAS, 3d earl, inherited the estate of James Saunderson, earl of Castleton, viscount Castleton, in Ireland, who d. without issue, 24 May 1723, and by act of parliament took the surname of SAUNDERSON, in pursuance of the will of the said earl. He m. Frances, da. to George Hamilton, 1st earl of Orkney, by whom (who d. 27 Dec. 1772) he had issue,

Leitrim, sometime Lord Chamberlain of the household; born 19 Aug. 1773; succeeded his father, GeorgeBussey, the late earl, 22 Aug. 1805; took the surname and arms of CHILD, in addition to those of VILLIERS, by royal sign manual, Dec. 1819; married, 23 May 1804, lady Sarah-Sophia Fane, eldest da. of John, earl of Westmoreland, K.G., (by Sarah-Anne, sole heiress of Robert Child, of Osterley Park, co. Middlesex, esq..) who possesses the very large property of her maternal grandfather, Robert Child, of Osterley Park, esq., and has issue, 1. GEORGE-AUGUSTUS-FREDERICK, viscount Villiers, M.P. for Weymouth, b. 4 April 1808;2. AUGUSTUS-JOHN, b. 10 July 1810, m., 20 Sept. 1831, to the hon. Georgiana-Augusta-Henrietta Elphinstone, only da. of George, late viscount Keith, by his 2d wife, and half sister of baroness Keith; 3. FREDERICK-WILLIAM, b. 20 July 1815, in the army; 4.
