HENRY FITZROY, 1st duke of Grafton, K.G., was the 2d natural son of king Charles II., by Barbara Villiers, duchess of Cleveland. His majesty was pleased to grant to his grace, by letters patent, 5 June 1671, the prisage and butlerage on all wines imported into England, which grant was, 26 March 1806, surrendered to the crown in consideration of an annuity of £6870 per annum, which annuity was to cease on failure of issue male of Henry, 1st duke of Grafton; his elder brother, CHARLES FITZROY, was duke of Cleveland, and his younger brother GEORGE FITZROY, was created duke of Northumberland, both which titles are extinct. His grace was b. 28 Sept. 1663, created baron of Sudbury, viscount Ipswich, and earl of Euston, 16 Aug. 1672, and 11 Sept. 1675, duke of GRAFTON; in 1680, he was elected K.G., and m., 1 Aug. 1689, Isabella Bennet, sole h. of Henry, earl of Ar

lington, viscount Thetford, and baron Arlington, (by Isabella de Nassau, one of the das. of Lewis de Nassau, lord of Beverwaert, natural son of Maurice, prince of Orange, and count de Nassau,) and by her (who m., 2dly, sir Thomas Hanmer, bart., and d. 7 Feb. 1722-3) had CHARLES, 2d duke. His grace being at the siege of Cork, under the command of the duke of Marlborough, received a wound while he was leading up a party, of which he d. 21 Sept. 1690, and was succeeded by his only son,

HENRY BEAUFORT, 3d duke of Somerset, great-grandson of John of Gaunt, duke of Lancaster, was beheaded for his adherence to Henry VI. 1463, being taken prisoner at the battle of Hexham. He left issue by Joan Hill, a natural son, sir Charles Somerset, K.G., who marrying Elizabeth, only da. and h. of William Herbert, earl of Huntingdon, and baron Herbert of Ragland, Chepstow, and Gower, was himself created baron Herbert, of Ragland, 1506, and earl of Worcester, in 1514. His greatgreat-grandson, Henry, 5th earl, was created marquess of Worcester, 1642; and his grandson, HENRY, 3d marquess, was created duke of Beaufort, 1682.

CHARLES-NOEL SOMERSET, 4th duke of Beaufort, was grandson of the 1st duke, and succeeded to the title on the death of his brother, Henry, 3d duke, without issue, in 1745. He m., 1 May 1740, Elizabeth Berkeley, in her own right baroness Bottetourt, da. of the dowager viscountess Hereford, (by John-Symes Berkeley, of Stoke-Gifford, esq.,) only sister and h. to Norborne, baron Bottetourt, who d. 1776, by whom he had issue,

Middlesex, Hereditary Grand Falconer of England, and Hereditary Registrar of the Court of Chancery, D.C.L.; born 24 March 1801; succeeded his father, William, late duke, 17 July 1825; married, 16 June 1827, Harriett, da. of Matthew Mellon, gent., and widow of Thomas Coutts, esq. (who d. 6 Aug. 1837).

CHARLES BEAUCLERK, 1st duke of St. Albans, was natural son of king Charles II., by Eleanor Gwynn, b. 1670, created, 27 Dec. 1676, baron of HEDDINGTON, and earl of BURFORD, and 10 Jan. 1684, advanced to the dignity of duke of ST. ALBANS, K.G., &c., m., 17 April 1694, Diana de Vere, eldest da. and co-h. of Aubrey de Vere, the 20th and last earl of Oxford, and by her (who d. Jan. 1742) had
