I. TRANSLATE, Acts xv. 1-4:

Beginning, Καί τινες κατελθόντες από της Ιουδαίας, κ.τ.λ.
Ending, ανήγγειλαν τε όσα ο θεός εποίησεν μετ' αυτών.

How are τινες κατελθόντες από της Ιουδαίας designated in the Epistle to the Galatians? To what place did they go down ? On what previous occasions had Barnabas been an associate of St Paul? Give the name of one other member of this deputation. Distinguish between Gijonua and ζήτησις. II. Translate, Acts xxii. 14–18:

Beginning, “Ο δε είπεν ο Θεός των πατέρων ημών, κ.τ.λ.

Ending, διότι ου παραδέξονταί σου την μαρτυρίαν περί εμού. What is the original signification of προχείριζομαι? What additional circumstance, in his account of himself after his conversion, does St Paul mention in his Epistle to the Galatians ? Parse αναστας, βάπτισαι, and derive έκστασις. III. Translate, Acts xxv. 13–16:

Ending, διότι εξ έργων νόμου ού δικαιωθήσεται πάσα σάρξ. What were the circumstances of this dispute ? In what way did St Peter deviate from the truth of the Gospel, and his own previous declaration ? VI. Translate, 1 Tim. v. 9—15 :

Ending, χάριν ήδη γάρ τινες εξετράπησαν οπίσω του σατανά. Paley observes that the expression χήρα καταλέγεσθω accords with a passage in the Acts of the Apostles: give the substance of this passage. Explain την πρώτην πίστιν, and ενός άνδρός γυνή. Supply the substantive to νεωτέρας, Derive αφορμή and καταστρηνίαω. VII. Translate, 2 Tim. ii. 14–18:

Explain the metaphorical usage of ορθοτομέω and προκόπτω. What mention does St Paul make of Hymenæus in his former Epistle to Timothy? What set of Heretics in the first century held that the Resurrection was already past; and what meaning did they attach to the word Resurrection?


I. TRANSLATE, Acts xv. 23-29 :

Beginning, Οι απόστολοι και οι πρεσβύτεροι και οι, κ.τ.λ.

Ending, εξ ών διατηρούντες εαυτούς εύ πράξετε. έρρωσθε. On what river was this Antioch situated? About what time was it founded, and from whom did it take its name? Supply the ellipsis in the first sentence. παραδεδωκόσι τας ψυχάς αυτών κ.τ.λ. Specify the occasions on which Paul and Barnabas had so acted. Express in Latin Eů πράξετε. Parse εκλεξαμένους, επάναγκες, έρρωσθε (giving its Latin equivalent).

II. Translate, Acts xvi. 38-xvii. 3:

Beginning, Απήγγειλαν δε τους στρατηγούς οι ραβδούχοι, κ.τ.λ.

Ending, έστιν ο Χριστός Ιησούς δν εγω καταγγέλλω υμίν. Enumerate the several ways in which the rights of a Roman citizen were acquired. How was Amphipolis situated with respect to Philippi, and why was it so called? What is the modern name of Thessalonica? Derive, and give the Latin equivalent of ραβδούχος. Κατά το ειωθός : Give instances of this practice of St Paul.

III. Translate, Acts xix. 8–12:

Beginning, Εισελθων δε εις την συναγωγήν, κ.τ.λ.

Ending, νόσους, τά τε πνεύματα τα πονηρα εκπορεύεσθαι. Give the different significations of η βασιλεία του θεού in the New Testament. What region is here designated by 'Asia, and what was the name of its chief city ? Derive σουδάριον and σιμικίνθιον; and connect the original with the derived meaning of σχολή. Parse επαρρησιάζετο, ηπείθουν, απoστας.

IV. Translate, Acts xxiv, 10–13:
Beginning, '

Απεκρίθη τε ο Παύλος, νεύσαντος αυτώ, κ.τ.λ. Ending, παραστήσαι δύνανται περί ών νυνί κατηγορουσίν μου. Give a brief account of the life and character of Felix. What title is here designated by ηγεμών ? From which of the Roman emperors did he receive his appointment, and who was at this time emperor ? αφ' ής ανέβην, to what does ης refer? Parse γνώναι, πλείους, παραστήσαι.

V. Translate, Gal. iv. 814:

Beginning, Αλλά τότε μεν ουκ ειδότες θεόν έδoυλεύσατε, κ.τ.λ.

Ending, άγγελον θεού εδέξασθέ με, ως Χριστόν Ιησούν. With what object was this Epistle written? What was the religion of the Galatians before their conversion ? Explain γνωσθέντες υπό θεού. In which of his Epistles, and in what words, does the Apostle probably allade to this ασθένεια της σαρκός? VI. Translate, 1 Tim. iii. 1–7:

Beginning, Πιστός ο λόγος Εί τις επισκοπής ορέγεται, κ.τ.λ.

Ending, ίνα μή εις ονειδισμόν εμπέση και παγίδα του διαβόλου. In what other Epistle are the qualifications for the office of Bishop specified? Are dlakóvol mentioned by name in the Acts of the Apostles ? Explain κρίμα του διαβόλου. Derive ανεπίληπτος, επιεικής, νεόφυτος. VII. Translate, 2 Tim. i. 12–18:

Beginning, Δι' ήν αιτίαν και ταύτα πάσχω, αλλ' ουκ, κ.τ.λ.

Ending, και όσα εν Εφέσω διηκόνησεν, βέλτιον συ γινώσκεις. What do you understand by την παραθήκην μου and την καλήν παραθήκην, respectively ? The Romanists bring forward the passage relating to Onesiphorus as an authority from Scripture for a certain practice in their Church : what is that practice? Shew that no sufficient warrant for it can be deduced from this passage. Give some other instance of a like application of εκείνη η ημέρα. Parse δώη, διηκόνησε, απεστράφησαν.

I. TRANSLATE, Acts xviii. 24–27 :

Beginning, Ιουδαίος δέ τις 'Απολλως ονόματι, κ.τ.λ.

Ending, συνεβάλετο πολύ τοΐς πεπιστευκόσιν δια της χάριτος. Where was Alexandria, and in what year B.C. was it founded? Write 'Απολλως in its full form, and give other instances, from the New Testament, of proper names abbreviated. What are the two meanings of λόγιος, either of which it may bear in this passage? Derive κατηχεϊν. II. Translate, Acts xx. 25–31 :

Beginning, Και νύν ιδού εγω οίδα ότι ουκέτι όψεσθε, κ.τ.λ.

Ending, ουκ έπαυσάμην μετα δακρύων νουθετών ένα έκαστον. What information do we derive from St Paul's Epistles as to the subsequent condition of the Church at Ephesus ? What is said of that Church in the Book of Revelation? What is the situation of Miletus with respect to Ephesus ? Parse υπεστειλάμην, διεστραμμένα, περιεποιήσατο, έθετο.
