CREPAAL OBSERVATIONS,

Hadlow Down, Boys and girl 1 A mised school, in six classes, under a master: unceasing pains are taken with it by Rev. W wards, the incumbent, very much to its advantage. 2. Good. No corporal punishments administered; the more serious mults reported to the clergyman, who rebukes them in open school. 4. Very good and well graduated. The girls have a chaperone who teaches them sewing in the afternoon, while boys are reading geography and history, which girls do not learn. 5. Mr. Robert Lidgate, age 19, from Winchester training-school; a very intelligent, wellinformed, and unpresuming person. Seemed good-tempered and well acquainted with lits school. 6. Wants parallel desks and an easel or two, with black-boards. Recommended a very well-qualified candidate for apprenticeship. Cuckfield, Boys'-1. Boys' school 41 feet by 20, underneath girls' and coinciding with Weil found with parallel desks and apparatus; divided into six classes. 2. Quite satisfactory. 4. Reading fair; considerable pains are taken with Scripture and the eatechism; the latter was repeated with very creditable precision. 5. The master a man of excellent personal character and much attached to his employment. With so much fondness for the work he might find it an advantage to acquaint himself-if pos sible, by observation-with the methods of teaching which have found favour in a few efficient schools.

Cuckfield, Girls'.-Much the same remarks will apply to the girls' school. They read
very fairly; the mistress is a kindly-disposed and most worthy person, and the moral
influence of her character on the giris is gratifyingly perceptible, but their intelligence
needs more cultivation.

West Hoathly, Boys' and Girls'.-1. School room common to boys and girls, and
seemed quite full enough with 69 who were present, looking very neat, good tempered,
and happy. 2. Gentle and effective. 4. Very fair and duly graduated. 5. Mr. Wood-
lands, Chichester; fairly accomplished, but a little deficient in self-possession; his
school, however, spoke well for him. A dame attends in afternoons to teach sewing.
6. Wants parallel desks, two easels, and black-boards; map of the world and map of
Palestine. The clergyman takes much interest in this school.
Betchworth, Boys'.-1. Boys at a school a quarter of a-mile from the girls, 25 feet by
15. 2. Efficient. 4. Fair enough, but does not extend much beyond the letter of what
they read. 5. Mr. Rookwood, trained at the Central, Westminster. 6. Wants parallel
desks, one black-board and easel, map of England and Europe.
Betchworth, Girls'.-1. Two rooms, in a private house, of insufficient size; to be
changed as soon as practicable. The present mistress is 84 years of age; it is wished
that she should retain the office during her life; the duty is done by her daughter. A
considerable change in the organization of the school is proposed at a time which cannot
be far distant. 4. Satisfactory in reading and arithmetic, but information scanty beyond
the letter of the very few and exclusively religious books which they read. 5. Mrs.
Skeets; sufficiently intelligent; takes great pains with the discipline of the school.
6. Want books, maps, and apparatus.
Witley, Boys'.-I. Very good building; well found in apparatus, &c.; parallel
desks at one end, gallery at the other. Four classes; general appearance indicative
of a thriving school. It enjoys the advantage of a real and practical interest taken in
it by the rector and his family. 2. Gentle and good. The master seemed on good
terms with the boys, who looked healthy and happy. Drilling very fair. The children,
being gathered from a widely-dispersed population, absent themselves on any slight
pretext, which somewhat embarrasses uniformity of progress. 3. Monitorial. 5. Very
fair. Very good writing, and average reading and arithmetic; geography, history, and
grammar were but in very rudimentary stages. 5. Mr. Joshua Stoit, age 35; a very
painstaking, unassuming, and fairly efficient master.

Westbourne, Boys'.-1. Is the eastern half of a very plain and scarcely sufficient
brick building, a little defective in mechanical arrangements; but it is impossible not
to augur very favourably for its efficiency from the excellent influence of the clergyman,
Mr. Newland, who takes a very lively and energetic interest in the school, and is inde-
fatigable in its behalf and for the individual welfare of the scholars. 2. Very good; no
appearance of harshness or of its effects. A good-tempered, well conducted, and con-
tented-looking set. Good drilling and marching to songs. 4. Reading and writing very
fair; Arithmetic moderate. 5. Master, Mr. Penuicott, attached to the boys and knows
his school well; and with painstaking, and being careful to advance himself as well as
his scholars, may become a valuable master. 6. Parallel desks seem to me very needful
here. When there is so much spirit in the clergyman, and material in the scholars, it
seems a pity there should not be every attainable mechanical facility.

Westbourne, Girls'.-1. The western half of same building as boys; five classes. 2.
Exceedingly good. A very orderly, neat, and altogether prepossessing set of children.
4. Very fair, within the range of reading, writing, needlework, and religious instruction.
5. Mrs. Covington, a most respectable and painstaking person, whose moral influence was
very perceptible upon her scholars.

West Dean.-1. The boys' school is a proportionate part of a very handsome and
picturesque building, under the immediate care of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Harcourt. It was
only the boys' school that I was desired to visit. It is 30 feet by 18 feet, and 134 feet high;.
five classes. The population are partly diverted from this school to the neighbouring one
of Singleton-two thinuish schools instead of one large one. 2. A very well conducted
set of boys. 4. Very good reading and writing; arithmetic I thought a little defective.
Religious instruction, geography, grammar, history. Music very good amongst the upper
boys. 5. Very commendable, unpretending and efficient. 6. I recommended parallel
desks. Otherwise the school is very well found; I came for pupil-teachers, but there was
no boy willing, though two or three competent to be candidates.

Brighton, St John's, Boys'.-1. Part of a very good building, which comprised under one
roof boys', girls', and infant-schools, each with a class-room in addition to the main room.
These rooms are all of ample size, well warmed and ventilated. The boys' school has
three long parallel desks, containing twenty scholars each. The tripartite division is
adopted, class-room, desks, and area being constantly occupied by successive sections. 2.
Very fair. Corporal punishment rare. 4. Good reading and writing; average arith-
metic. The schools are but nine or ten months old. Geography, grammar, and history
beginning. 5. Mr. Josiah Anderson, St. Mark's, appears well-informed and efficient;
knows his school; assisted by Mr. Holmes, who leaves shortly to go to training.
Brighton, St. John's, Girls'.-1. This room corresponds to the boys'; they are entirely
separated, however. The desks and general arrangements are the same. 2. Good; a neat,
orderly, satisfactory appearance. 4. Reading and writing, good. General answers on
reading lesson, fair; Arithmetic, average. Geography and grammar, beginning; Scrip-
ture, very fair. 5. Miss Farncome, assisted by Miss Richman, both intelligent, active,
and apparently doing their duty in a very satisfactory manner.
Brighton, St. John's, Infants'.-1. One room, same size as boys' and girls', with a
gallery; a class-room besides for the very little ones, also with gallery, 2-5. Very
satisfactory.

exhibited more than average accuracy. Altogether the school is in a very commendable
and promising condition. 5. Miss Blakeney, about 23, intelligent and of prepossessing
manner; defective in self-possession, but the general characteristics of the school are
bearing good testimony to her ability, and may serve to give her courage.
Elham.-1. Mixed school, taught by one master, a mistress attending to teach
girls sewing. The room 20 feet by 18 feet; admits easily of division into two parts by
curtain or wooden partition, if necessary; wall desks; play-ground airy; offices clean;
situation good; architecture Elizabethan and picturesque. 2. Ordinary; the master free
from harshness, and the children seem attached to him. 3. Monitorial; mixed simulta-
neous and individual. 4. Perhaps the children were a little bewildered by the novelty of
a stranger's visit, and so did themselves less than justice; but I thought that their intelli-
gence admitted of somewhat more awakening and connexion with their work. 5. Mr.
Harding (who was at Central School, Westminster, in training for a short time) has been
here from the opening of the school (3 years). Unassuming, intelligent, and well-
informed, and decidedly interested in his school, but might cultivate method and adapta-
tion in his teaching, with advantage. Recommended an intelligent boy for apprentice-
ship.
Ticehurst, Boys'.-1. Boys in separate room under same roof with girls; handsome Eliza-
bethan schools; rooms a good size, well found with parallel desks, and gallery; airy, well
placed. 2. Good, quiet, and fairly effective. 4. Arithmetic, very correct, and farther ad-
vanced than is common. Reading might be better-is wanting in carefulness and fluency.
General information very moderate. 5. Mr. John Smith, 32, intelligent; candid about
his school, calculated to be a very useful master.

Ticehurst, Girls'.-1. Same as boys. 2. Very good; cleanliness and order manifest,

Colonial, eight months here; good-tempered and intelligent; did not attempt to over-
rate her school; gave me quite a favourable impression of her adaptation for her work.

Tandridge, Boys'.-1. A very picturesque and attractive-looking school, built when such
were uncommon, thirty years ago, in a beautiful situation. Rather crowded; there are
parallel desks, and a gallery. 2. Very good. 4. Writing and arithmetic, unusually good
and accurate; reading not quite so good, Scripture taken much pains with. 5. Mr.
Davis, of great integrity and courteous manner; a good and useful man, of whom I
brought away a very favourable impression.

Tandridge, Girls'.-1. Precisely as boys' room. A class-room for each would be a very

benches occupying area. 2. Very good. Tidily dressed, clean, cheerful-looking children.
3. Monitorial. 4. Very fair, but contracted within the strict range of Scriptural subjects.
5. Miss Mary Ann Inman, age 22; Whitelands certificated. Frank spoken; of gentle,
unassuming character; of very fair attainment; seemed to me to teach quite satisfacto-
rily; likely to exercise a very desirable influence over the tone and manners of the chil-
dren. Wrote afterwards upon her certificate-"This school exhibits evidence of the
modest integrity, good sense, and gentle manner of the mistress; and if her intellectual
qualifications are not proportionately reflected in the scholars, it is not for want of ability
in teaching, but because of discouraging circumstances with which I am acquainted, but
over which she has not had the slightest control."

Southwark, St. Mary's, Boys'.-1. Very good buildings, but scarcely large enough for
the numbers. Boys' room apart from girls'. Gallery divided off from the area by a cur-
tain. Parallel desks, and a class-room. 2. Fair. Corporal punishment on the decrease,
though still partially retained. 3. Tripartite. Seven or ten small subdivisions of classes
reading, in area, the same lesson at one moment. 4. Very efficient. A somewhat larger
proportion than is usual are proficient in rules of arithmetic and other subjects compara-
tively high, while their average time in the school appears to be somewhat shorter than is
usual elsewhere. 5. Mr. John Wilson Pringle, trained at Battersea eight years ago; of
unusual attainment and industry, and deeply interested in his profession. 6. A want of
maps for hanging in the school.
Deptford Road, Boys'.-1. Sixty feet by 30, furnished in the old way with desks round
walls, and class benches in area, divided into four impracticably large classes. Class-
rooms are projected, and parallel desks, which will bring with them many improvements.
2. Moderate. 3. Monitorial. 4. Arithmetic and writing, both good. Reading indif-
ferent, for the very obvious reason that a class of thirty-seven reading all round affords
very few opportunities for each boy to read. I suggested breaking up class during read-
ing into little pentads, disposing them in distant points of the school under as many
of the better readers as the number required, and reading each lesson several times and
then reassembling for oral lecture and questioning upon the lesson from the master.
Tried the experiment, which seemed to answer without distressing noise. 5. Mr.
Moore, a highly respectable person. 6. These schools enjoy the benefit of the most active
interest and exertion on the part of the rector, the Rev E. Blick, whose frequent visits and
kind manner in the schools cannot but have a very good effect.

Deptford Road, Girls'.-1. Sixty feet by 30, divided into four classes. Class-room and parallel desks projected. 2. Very satisfactory. Children tidy, clean, and quiet. 4. Writing pretty good. Arithmetic moderate. Reading indifferent, because of magnitude of classes. 5. Miss Mary Harrop. Good accent and manners. Candid, intelligent, and unassuming. Seemed much interested in her school, and fond of the girls, over whom she exercises a very commendable influence.
