Brief Notices of Books.

The People's Bible: Discourses upon Holy Scripture. Vol. I.-The Book of Genesis. By JOSEPH PARKER, D.D., Author of "Ecce Deus," etc., etc. Hodder and Stoughton. (8s.)

[ocr errors]

DR. PARKER, in his Preface, says that "this is not a Bible Commentary in the usual sense of that term. It is a pastor's commentary upon such portions of Holy Scripture as are of obvious and immediate importance to the growth of the soul in Divine wisdom. Instead of going minutely through any book verse by verse, the first object will be to discover its governing idea or principal purpose, and to make that clear by taking out of the book, say twelve, twenty, or thirty instances most strikingly illustrative of the writer's intention." Genesis is interpreted as a book of Beginnings, while Exodus is to be made to illustrate phases of Providence, and Leviticus, Religious Mechanics, &c., &c. If Dr. Parker is spared to execute his great work, and carries it out and completes it in the way he has begun it, he will lay the "great company of preachers" under lasting obligations. In this volume the introductory discourses on inspiration, the spiritual organ, the Unknowable God, and kindred topics are of special value, and his first chapter is as fresh and vigorous as its suggestive title—The Unbeginning Beginning-would lead his readers to expect. Dr. Parker's affluence of imagination, fertility of resource, genius for exposition, and quick intuitions of spritual truth, combined with his large knowledge of human nature and wide and varied reading, place him in the very front rank of teachers and expounders of God's most Holy word. Originality is essential to the success of such a workand Dr. Parker is original almost to daring-but the assimilative faculty is essential also, and this faculty Dr. Parker possesses in perfection. When he tells us that "the minister sees the best side of a man, the lawyer the worst, and the physician the real," that he believes "it is a matter of fact that most men are lunatics," or that " they say that a Church is unanimous, and a Church is at peace, when a correct interpreter would say it was the unanimity of the grave, the peace of death," the reader instantly recalls, and Dr. Parker would have him recall Galt's famous aphorism, Carlyle's "Mostly Fools," and Burke's "Regicide Peace." The noblest tree can only flourish when planted in a suitable soil, and it is as dependent as the sorriest crab or the smallest shrub on air, earth, and sky, and unlike them, it converts all into beauty and fruitfulness. We shall anticipate future instalments of this great work with great, and as it proceeds we have no doubt we shall with increasing, pleasure.

The Inward Witness, and other Discourses. By the Rev. W. B. POPE, D.D. London: T. Woolmer.

ADMIRABLE discourses for educated persons, whether ministers or laymen. The light of learning shines brightly and the fervour of the writer's devotion to the Personal Divine Human Saviour glows and burns on every page. Tender, discriminating, devout, these discourses lift us to a higher plane of thought and feeling, to meditate, to dwell on subjects of transcendent importance, until mind, heart, conscience, are filled and fired therewith.

Chips and Chats are very amusing, but Parson Jaques has his head on the right way, and his heart in the right place, and is a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. True to its title, the book is fragmentary, and many pages are fascinatingly funny. Whoever needs a few recreative hours can find them, and extract profit from them, in fellowship with Dr. Keen's clever and acute little 'Parson.'-Methodist New Connexion Magazine.
