2 Crown Him, ye martyrs of your God,
Who from His altar call:
Extol the stem of Jesse's rod,
And crown Him Lord of all.

3 Ye saints redeemed of Adam's race,
Ye ransomed from the fall:

Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all.

4 Sinners, whose love can ne'er forget
The wormwood and the gall,
Go spread your trophies at His feet,
And crown Him Lord of all.

5 Let every kindred, every tribe
On this terrestrial ball,
To Him all majesty ascribe,
And crown Him Lord of all.

60 that with yonder sacred throng,
We at His feet may fall,

Join in the everlasting song,
And crown Him Lord of all!

WATTS. He hath made us kings and priests unto God.-Rev. i. 6.

OW to the Lord that makes us know

1 N me wonders of His dying love,

Be humble honours paid below,
And strains of nobler praise above.

2 "Twas He that cleansed us from our sins,
And washed us in His precious blood;
"Tis He that makes us priests and kings,
And brings us rebels near to God.

8 To Jesus, our atoning Priest,
To Jesus, our exalted King,
Be everlasting power confessed,
And every tongue His glory sing.

4 Behold on flying clouds He comes,
And every eye shall see Him move:
Though with our sins we pierced Him

once,

Then He displays His pardoning love.

5 The unbelieving world shall wail,
While we rejoice to see the day:
Come, Lord; nor let Thy promise fail,
Nor let Thy chariot long delay.

The Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven.-Matt. xxiv. 30.

1 THE Lord of might from Sinai's brow Gave forth His voice of thunder; And Israel lay on earth below,

Outstretched in fear and wonder;
Beneath His feet was pitchy night,
And at His left hand, and His right,
The rocks were rent asunder.
2 The Lord of love, on Calvary,

A meek and suffering stranger,
Upraised to heaven His languid eye,
In

For us, He bore the weight of woe, For us, He gave His blood to flow, And met His Father's arger.

3 The Lord of love, the Lord of might, The King of all created,

Shall back return to claim His right,
On clouds of glory seated;
With trumpet-sound and angel-song,
And hallelujahs loud and long,
O'er death and hell defeated.

HE Lord shall come ! the earth shall quake;

The mountains to their centre shake;
And, withering from the vault of night,
The stars withdraw their feeble light.

2 The Lord shall come! but not the same
As once in lowliness He came,-
A silent Lamb before His foes,
A weary man, and full of woes.

3 The Lord shall come ! a glorious form,
With wreath of flame and robe of storm,
On cherub wings, and wings of wind,
Appointed Judge of all mankind.

4 Can this be He, once wont to stray,
A Pilgrim on the world's highway,
Oppressed by power, and mocked by pride,
The Nazarene,-The Crucified?

5 While sinners, in despair, shall call,-
Rocks, hide us; mountains, on us fall!
The saints, ascending from the tomb,
Shall joyful sing,-The Lord is come!

OLIVERS.
Behold, He cometh with clouds.
Rev. i. 7.

Lone for favoured sinners slain,
Thousand thousand saints attending,
Swell the triumph of His train:
Hallelujah!

O! He comes with clouds descending,

Jesus comes and comes to reign. 2 Every eye shall then behold Him, Robed in dreadful majesty;

Those who set at nought and sold Him, Pierced and nailed Him to the tree, Deeply wailing,

Shall the true Messiah see.

3 Every island, sea, and mountain,
Heaven and earth shall flee away:
All who hate Him must, confounded,
Hear the summons of that day :-
Come to judgment,
Come to judgment, come away!
4 Now redemption, long expected,
See, in solemn pomp, appear;
All His saints, by man rejected,
Now shall meet Him in the air:
Hallelujah!

Jude 6.

1DAY of trumpet's awful sound,
AY of judgment, day of wonders!
Louder than a thousand thunders,
Shakes the vast creation round;
How the summons

Will the sinner's heart confound!
2 See the Judge, our nature wearing,
Clothed in majesty divine;
Ye who long for His appearing,
Then shall say,-This God is mine:
Gracious Saviour,

Own me in that day for Thine. 3 At His call the dead awaken,

Rise to life from earth and sea;
All the powers of nature shaken
By His look prepare to flee;
Careless sinner,

What will then become of thee 4 But to those who have confessed,

Loved and served the Lord below,
He will say,-Come near, ye blessed,
See the kingdom I bestow:

You for ever

Shall My love and glory know.

87,87,887. RINGWALD AND COLLYER. And I saw a great white throne, and Him that sat on it.-Rev. xx. 11. REAT God, what do I see and hear?

1 Gr the end of things created:

Behold the Judge of man appear,

On clouds of glory seated!" The trumpet sounds, the graves restore The dead which they contained before; Prepare, my soul, to meet Him. 2 The dead in Christ shall first arise, At the last trumpet's sounding; Caught up to meet Him in the skies, With joy their Lord surrounding: No gloomy fears their souls dismay; His presence sheds eternal day

On those prepared to meet Him.

3 Great God, what do I see and hear?
The end of things created:
Behold the Judge of man appear,
On clouds of glory seated!
Low at His cross I view the day

When heaven and earth shall pass away,

And thus prepare to meet Him.

[blocks in formation]

1 THAT awful day will surely come, The appointed hour makes haste, When I must stand before my Judge,

2 Thou lovely Chief of all my joys,
Thou Sovereign of my heart,
How could I bear to hear Thy voice
Pronounce the sound-Depart?

3 O wretched state of deep despair,
To see my God remove,

And fix my doleful station where
I must not taste His love!

4 Jesus, to Thy kind arms I flee,
And hang upon Thy breast
Without a gracious smile from Thee,
My spirit cannot rest.

5 O tell me that my worthless name
Is graven on Thy hands

Show me some promise in Thy book, Where my salvation stands.

Matt. xxv. 6..

E virgin souls, arise

YE

With all the dead, awake;

Unto salvation wise,

Oil in your vessels take:

Upstarting at the midnight cry,

Behold the heavenly Bridegroom nigh.

He comes, He comes to call
The nations to His bar,
And raise to glory all

Who meet for glory are:

Made ready for your full reward;

Go forth with joy to meet your Lord.

Go, meet Him in the sky,

Your everlasting Friend:
Your Head to glorify,

With all His saints ascend:

Ye pure in heart, obtain the grace
To see without a veil His face.

4 The everlasting doors

Shall soon the saints receive,
Above yon angel-powers,
In glorious joy to live,
Far from a world of grief and sin,
With God eternally shut in.

5 Then let us wait to hear

The trumpet's welcome sound:
To see our Lord appear,
Watching, let us be found,

With lamps well trimmed; then joyful
And meet our Saviour in the skies. [rise,

WHEN Thou, my righteous Judge,
shalt come

To fetch Thy ransomed people home
Shall I among them stand?
Shall such a worthless worm as I,
Who sometimes am afraid to die,

2 I love to meet among them now,
Before Thy gracious feet to bow,
Though vilest of them all:
But can I bear the piercing thought,
What! if my name should be left out,
When Thou for them shalt call?

3 Prevent it, Saviour, by Thy grace;
Be Thou my only hiding-place,
In this the accepted day.

Thy pardoning voice, O let me hear,
To still my unbelieving fear;

Nor let me fall, I pray.

4 Among Thy saints let me be found, Whene'er the archangel's trump shall And see Thy smiling face: [sound, Then with what rapture shall I sing, While heaven's resounding mansions With shouts of sovereign grace. [ring

2 Lo! on a narrow neck of land, "Twixt two unbounded seas I stand, Secure, insensible;

A point of time, a moment's space, Removes me to that heavenly place, Or shuts me up in hell.

8 O God, mine inmost soul convert, And deeply on my thoughtful heart Eternal things impress;

Give me to feel their solemn weight, And tremble on the brink of fate, And wake to righteousness.

4 Before me place, in dread array, The pomp of that tremendous day,

When Thou with clouds shalt come To judge the nations at Thy bar; And tell me, Lord, shall I be there To meet a joyful doom?

5 Be this my one great business here,
With serious industry and fear,
Eternal bliss to ensure;
Thine utmost counsel to fulfil,
And suffer all Thy righteous will,
And to the end endure.

6 Then, Saviour, then my soul receive,
Transported from this vale, to live
And reign with Thee above;
Where faith is sweetly lost in sight,
And hope in full, supreme delight,
And everlasting love.

1REAT was the day, the joy was great, When the divine disciples met; Whilst on their heads the Spirit came, And sat like tongues of cloven flame. 2. What gifts, what miracles He gave, And power to kill, and power to save! Furnished their tongues with wondrous words,

Instead of shields and spears and swords.
3 These weapons of the holy war,
Of what almighty force they are
To make our stubborn passions bow,
And lay the proudest rebel low.

4 Nations, the learned and the rude,
Are by these heavenly arms subdued
While Satan rages at his loss,
And hates the doctrine of the cross.

5 Great King of grace, my heart subdue,
I would be led in triumph too,-
A willing captive to my Lord,-
And sing the victories of His word.

The promise of the Father.-Acts i. 4. ANTHRONED on High, Almighty Lord,

ENTHE

The Holy Ghost send down; Fulfil in us Thy faithful word,

And all Thy mercies crown.

2 Though on our heads no tongues of fire Their wondrous powers impart, Grant, Saviour, what we more desire, Thy Spirit in our heart.

3 Spirit of life and light and love,

Thy heavenly influence give; Quicken our souls, born from above, In Christ that we may live.

4 To our benighted minds reveal The glories of His grace;

And bring us where no clouds conceal The brightness of His face.

5 His love within us shed abroad, Life's ever-springing well; Till God in us, and we in God, In love eternal dwell.

428 The Spirit of Christ.-1 Peter i. 11.

1 ET songs of praises fill the sky
Christ, our ascended Lord,

Sends down His Spirit from on high,
According to His word.

The Spirit, by His heavenly breath,
New life creates within;

He quickens sinners from the death
Of trespasses and sin.

3 The things of Christ the Spirit takes,
And to our hearts reveals;
Our bodies He His temple makes,
And our redemption seals.

4 Come, Holy Spirit, from above,
With Thy celestial fire;

Come, and with flames of zeal and love
Our hearts and tongues inspire.

The Spirit like a dove descending.
Mark i. 10.

COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,

With all Thy quickening powers; Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours.

2 Look how we grovel here below,
Fond of these trifling toys;
Our souls can neither fly nor go
To reach eternal joys.

3 In vain we tune our formal songs,
In vain we strive to rise;
Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

4 Dear Lord, and shall we ever live
At this poor dying rate?

Our love so faint, so cold to Thee,
And Thine to us so great?

5 Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With all Thy quickening powers;
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

He shall teach you all things.
John xiv. 26.

TERNAL Spirit! we confess
And sing the wonders of Thy grace;
Thy power conveys our blessings down
From God the Father and the Son.

2 Enlightened by Thine heavenly ray,
Our shades and darkness turn to day;
Thine inward teachings make us know
Our danger and our refuge too.

3 Thy power and glory work within,
And break the chains of reigning sin;
Do our imperious lusts subdue,

And form our wretched hearts anew. 4 The troubled conscience knows Thy voice; Thy cheering words awake our joys; Thy words allay the stormy wind, And calm the surges of the mind.

Rom. viii. 14.

HOME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove, With light and comfort from above; Be Thou our Guardian, Thou our Guide: O'er every thought and step preside.

2 The light of truth to us display, And make us know and choose Thy way: Plant holy fear in every heart,

That we from God may ne'er depart.

Which we must take to dwell with God;
Lead us to Christ-the living way,

When nature rose to view,

When Thou shalt all renew!

To hear a Saviour's name,

How will the ransomed raise their voice,
To whom that Saviour came!

Assembled round the throne,
Thy new creation shall ascribe
To sovereign love alone.
