228 Divine Power and Grace. GIVE thanks to God Most High,

1

The Universal Lord;

The sovereign King of kings;
And be His grace adored.
His power and grace
Are still the same
And let His name
Have endless praise.
2 How mighty is His hand!

What wonders hath He done!
He formed the earth and seas,
And spread the heavens alone.
Thy mercy, Lord,

Shall still endure
And ever sure
Abides Thy word.

His wisdom framed the sun,
To crown the day with light;
The moon and twinkling stars,
To cheer the darksome night.
His power and grace
Are still the same;
And let His name
Have endless praise.

4 He saw the nations lie
All perishing in sin,
And pitied the sad state
The ruined world was in.
Thy mercy, Lord,
Shall still endure;
And ever sure

(PSALM 136.) God's Mercy Eternal. 1 LET a for He is kind: ET us, with a gladsome mind,

For His mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

2 Let us sound His name abroad,
For of gods He is the God;
For His mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

3 He, with all-commanding might,
Filled the new-made world with light:
For His mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

4 He the golden-tressed sun
Caused all day his course to run:
For His mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

5 All things living He doth feed
His full hand supplies their need:
For His mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

6 He His chosen race did bless,
In the wasteful wilderness:
For His mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

7 He hath, with a piteous eye,
Looked upon our misery:
For His mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

8 Let us then, with gladsome mind,
Praise the Lord, for He is kind:
For His mercies shall endure,
Ever faithful, ever sure.

L.M. (PSALM 138.) WATTS. Restoring and Preserving Grace. WITH all my powers of heart and tongue,

WITH

I'll praise my Maker in my song:
Angels shall hear the notes I raise,
Approve the song, and join the praise.

2 Angels that make Thy church their care
Shall witness my devotions there:
While holy zeal directs mine eyes
To Thy fair temple in the skies.
3 I'll sing Thy truth and mercy, Lord,
I'll sing the wonders of Thy word;
Not all Thy works and names below
So much Thy power and glory show.
4 To God I cried when troubles rose;
He heard me, and subdued my foes:
He did my rising fears control, - [soul.
And strength diffused through all my
5 Amidst a thousand snares I stand,
Upheld and guarded by Thy hand;
Thy words my fainting soul revive,
And keep my dying faith alive.

6 Grace will complete what grace begins,
To save from sorrows or from sins:
The work that wisdom undertakes,
Eternal mercy ne'er forsakes.

(PSALM 139.) God Everywhere.

1 TN all my vast concerns with Thee,
IN
In vain my soul would try

To shun Thy presence, Lord, or flee
The notice of Thine eye.

2 Thine all-surrounding sight surveys
My rising and my rest,

My public walks, my private ways,
And secrets of my breast.

3 My thoughts lie open to the Lord
Before they're formed within;
And ere my lips pronounce the word,
He knows the sense I mean.

40 wondrous knowledge, deep and high!
Where can a creature hide?
Within Thy circling arms I lie,
Beset on every side.

5 So let Thy grace surround me still,
And like a bulwark prove,

To guard my soul from every ill,
Secured by sovereign love.

(PSALM 140.) 886,886. Prayer in the Midst of Enemies. "Y God, when dangers press me round, 1MY why but in Thee is found,

O leave me not alone:

Preserve my soul from every snare, Grant me Thine aid, and let my prayer Reach Thine eternal throne.

2 Thou art my God, my strength, my stay Who in temptation's evil day

Hast shielded me from harm: Now to the malice of my foes, Lord, the resistless force oppose Of Thine almighty arm.

3 I know that God His church will keep, Will bid the mourner cease to weep,

And plead the poor man's cause: When wrath the wicked shall destroy, They shall abide in peace and joy Who love Thy righteous laws.

WATTS.

LORD, Thou hast searched and seen

me through;

Thine eye commands with piercing view My rising and my resting hours,

My heart and flesh with all their powers.

2 My thoughts, before they are mine own,
Are to my God distinctly known;
He knows the words I mean to speak,
Ere from mine opening lips they break.

[blocks in formation]

Y God, accept mine early vows,
Like morning incense in Thy house:

And let my nightly worship rise

Sweet as the evening sacrifice,

2 Watch o'er my lips, and guard them, Lord,

From every rash and heedless word; Nor let my feet incline to tread The guilty paths where sinners lead. 3 O may the righteous, when I stray, Kindly reprove my wandering way: Their gentle words, like ointment shed, Shall never bruise, but cheer my head.

4 When I behold them pressed with grief,
I cry to heaven for their relief;
And by my warm petitions prove
How much I prize their faithful love.

(PSALM 143.) L.M. Complaint and Prayer.

WATTS.

MY righteous Judge, my gracious God,

Hear when I spread my hands abroad,

And cry for succour from Thy throne;
O make Thy truth and mercy known.

2 Look down in pity, Lord, and see
The mighty woes that burden me;
Down to the dust my life is brought,
Like one long buried and forgot.
3 For Thee I thirst, I pray, I mourn,
When will Thy smiling face return;
Shall all my joys on earth remove,
And God for ever hide His love?

4 Teach me to do Thy holy will,
And lead me to Thy heavenly hill;
Let the good Spirit of Thy love
Conduct me to Thy courts above.

C.M. (PSALM 145.) Life-long Praise.

WATTS.

LONG as I live I'll bless Thy name,
My King, my God of love;

My work and joy shall be the same
In the bright world above.

2 Great is the Lord, His power unknown, And let His praise be great;

I'll sing the honours of Thy throne,
Thy works of grace repeat.

3 Thy grace shall dwell upon my tongue; And while my lips rejoice,

The men that hear my sacred song
Shall join their cheerful voice.

4 Fathers to sons shall teach Thy name,
And children learn Thy ways;
Ages to come Thy truth proclaim,
And nations sound Thy praise.

5 Thy glorious deeds of ancient date
Shall through the world be known;
Thine arm of power, Thy heavenly state,
With public splendour shown.

240 The Goodness of God celebrated.

1

SWEET is the memory of Thy grace,
My God, my heavenly King;

Let age to age Thy righteousness
In sounds of glory sing.

2 God reigns on high, but not confines
His goodness to the skies;

Through the whole earth His bounty And every want supplies. [shines,

3 With longing eyes Thy creatures wait On Thee for daily food;

Thy liberal hand provides their meat,
And fills their mouths with good.

4 How kind are Thy compassions, Lord!
How slow Thine anger moves!
But soon He sends His pardoning word
To cheer the souls He loves.

5 Creatures with all their endless race
Thy power and praise proclaim;
But saints that taste Thy richer grace
Delight to bless Thy name.

(PSALM 145.) L.M. WATTS. British Christians invited to Praise. Mshall all the remnant of my days; Y God, my King, Thy various praise

Thy grace employ my humble tongue
Till death and glory raise the song.

2 The wings of every hour shall bear
Some grateful tribute to Thine ear;
And every setting sun shall see
New works of duty done for Thee.
3 Thy truth and justice I'll proclaim;
Thy bounty flows-an endless stream-
Thy mercy swift, Thine anger slow,
But dreadful to the stubborn foe.
4 Thy works with sovereign glory shine,
And speak Thy majesty divine:
Let Britain round her shores proclaim
The sacred honours of Thy name.

5 Let distant times and nations raise
The long succession of Thy praise,
And unborn ages make my song
The joy and labour of their tongue.

6 But who can speak Thy wondrous deeds?
Thy greatness all our thoughts exceeds:
Vast and unsearchable Thy ways!
Vast and immortal be Thy praise !

L.M.

WATTS. Nature, Providence, and Grace.

PRAISE ye the Lord; 'tis good to raise

Our hearts and voices in His praise:
His nature and His works invite
To make this duty our delight.

2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem,
And gathers nations to His name;
His mercy melts the stubborn soul,
And makes the broken spirit whole.
3 He formed the stars, those heavenly
flames;
[names;
He counts their numbers, calls their
His wisdom's vast, and knows no bound,
A deep where all our thoughts are
drowned.

4 Great is our Lord, and great His might;

And all His glories infinite:

He crowns the meek, rewards the just,
And treads the wicked to the dust.

5 ling to the Lord, exalt Him high, [sky;
Who spreads His clouds all round the
There He prepares the fruitful rain,
Ior lets the drops descend in vain.
6 He makes the grass the hills adorn,
And clothes the smiling fields with corn;
The beasts with food His hands supply,
And the young ravens when they cry.
7 Bit saints are precious in His sight:
He views His children with delight;
He sees their hope, He knows their fear,
Aid looks, and loves His image there.

WATTS.
The Seasons of the Year.
1 WITH songs and honours sounding
ddress the Lord on high, loud,
Oer the heavens He spreads His cloud,
And waters veil the sky.

2 He sends His showers of blessing down To cheer the plains below;

He makes the grass the mountains crown,
And corn in valleys grow.

3 His steady counsels change the face
Of the declining year;

He bids the sun cut short his race,
And wintry days appear.

4 His hoary frost, His fleecy snow,
Descend and clothe the ground;
The liquid streams forbear to flow,
In icy fetters bound.

5 He sends His word, and melts the snow, The fields no longer mourn;

He calls the warmer gales to blow,
And bids the spring return.

6 The changing wind, the flying cloud,
Obey His mighty word:"

With songs and honours sounding loud, Praise ye the sovereign Lord.

(PSALM 148.) L.M. WATTS.

[ocr errors]

LOUD hallelujahs to the Lord.

From distant worlds where creatures dwell;

Let heaven begin the solemn word,
And sound it, dreadful, down to hell.

CHORUS.

Each of His works His name displays, But they can ne'er fulfil His praise. 2 The Lord! how absolute He reigns! Let every angel bend the knee,

Sing of His love in heavenly strains, And speak how fierce His terrors be. 3 High on a throne His glories dwell, An awful throne of shining bliss; Fly through the world, O sun! and tell How dark thy beams compared with His. 4 Wide as His vast dominion lies, Let the Creator's name be known; Loud as His thunder shout His praise, And sound it lofty as His throne.

4 Saints should be joyful in their King,
E'en on a dying bed;

And like the souls in glory sing;
For God shall raise the dead.

Thrones are prepared for all His friends Who humbly loved Him here.

Yet when my voice expires in death,
My soul shall praise Him best.
