March Bequest.

SOUND OCT 2 1913

Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1874, by

J. H. AND W. F. ALLEN AND J. B. GREENOUGH, in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington.

Cambridge:
Press of John Wilson and Son.

NOTE:

THE text of this edition follows Ribbeck in the main, adhering, however, to the received reading where he seems to be not fully supported by his own apparatus criticus. Variations from Ribbeck or from Heyne are indicated in the margin.

In the preparation of the Notes, we have desired to give not only what may serve the learner in the bare understanding of the text, but, along with it, some hint of that wealth of traditional interpretation and illustration which is more important, perhaps, in the study of Virgil than in that of any other ancient poet. With this aim, we have taken whatever was good wherever we found it; but we are particularly indebted to Conington, whose work is admirable in every respect. The grammatical references are to Allen and Greenough's Latin Grammar, and to that of Prof. Gildersleeve, of the University of Virginia. The Botanical Index is derived chiefly from Fée's Flore de Virgile, contained in Lemaire's “ Bibliotheca Classica Latina.”

The second volume will contain the remainder of the Æneid, with the Georgics and the Minor Poems.
