131.

Pleading by the Cross.

1. LAMB of God, whose bleeding love
We now recall to mind,
Send the answer from above,
And let us mercy find:

Think on us who think on thee;
Every burdened soul release;

O! remember Calvary,

And bid us go in peace.

2. Through thy blood by faith applied, Let us thy pardon feel;

Speak us freely justified,

And all our sickness heal:

By thy passion on the tree,,

Let our griefs and troubles cease; O! remember Calvary,

And bid us go in peace.

3. Can we ever hence depart

Till thou our wants relieve?

Write forgiveness on our heart,
And all thine image give:
Still our souls shall cry to thee,
Till renewed by holiness;
Oh remember Calvary,

And bid us go in peace.

132. Pleading for Recovering Grace.

1. WRETCHED, helpless, and distressed,
Ah whither shall I fly?
Ever panting after rest,

Where shall I turn mine eye?
Naked, sick, and poor, and blind,
Bound in sin and misery:
Friend of sinners, let me find
My help, my all in thee.

2. Jesus, full of truth and grace,
Oh hear my sad complaint;
Be the wand'rer's resting-place,
A cordial for the faint:

[blocks in formation]

Sun, and moon, and stars decay,
Time shall soon this earth remove;
Rise, my soul, and haste away,
To seats prepared above.

2. Rivers to the ocean run,
Nor stay in all their course;
Fire ascending, seeks the sun;
Both speed them to their source:
So a soul that 's born of God

Pants to view his glorious face;
Upward tends to his abode

To rest in his embrace.

3. Cease, ye pilgrims, cease to mourn,
Press onward to the prize;
Soon your Saviour will return,
Triumphant in the skies:
Yet a season, and you know

Happy entrance will be given;
All your sorrows left below,

And earth exchanged for heaven.

1. My God, per-mit my tongue This joy, to call

thee mine;

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][merged small]

1. My God, permit my tongue
This joy to call thee mine;
And let my early cries prevail
To taste thy love divine.
2. My thirsty, fainting soul

Thy mercy doth implore:
Not travelers in desert lands
Can pant for waters more.
3. Within thy churches, Lord,
I long to find a place,
Thy power and glory to behold,
And feel thy quick'ning grace.
4. For life without thy love

No relish can afford;

No joy can be compared with this, To serve and please the Lord. 5. To thee I'll lift my hands;

I'll praise thee, while I live;
Not the rich dainties of a feast
Such food or pleasures give.

3. The shadow of thy wings
My soul in safety keeps;

I follow where my Father leads,
And he supports my steps.

136.

Hearken to the Word.

1. COME, sound his praise abroad,
And hymns of glory sing;
Jehovah is the sovereign God,
The universal King.

2. He formed the deeps unknown,
He gave the seas their bound;
The watery worlds are all his own,
And all the solid ground.

3. Come, worship at his throne;
Come, bow before the Lord:

We are his work, and not our own,
He formed us by his word.

4. To-day attend his voice,

Nor dare provoke his rod; ·

Come, like the people of his choice,
And own your gracious God.

5. But if your ears refuse

The language of his grace,

And hearts grow hard, like stubborn
Jews,

That unbelieving race;

6. The Lord in vengeance dressed,
Will lift his hand and swear -
"You that despise my promised rest,
Shall have no portion there."

137. Invitation to the House of God.

1. COME to the house of prayer,

O thou afflicted, come;

The God of peace shall meet thee there;

He makes that house his home.

2. Come to the house of praise,

Ye who are happy now;

In sweet accord your voices raise,

In kindred homage bow.

3. Ye aged, hither come,

For ye have felt his love;

Soon shall your trembling tongues be dumb,

Your lips forget to move.

4. Ye young, before his throne,

Come, bow; your voices raise;
Let not your hearts his praise disown,
Who gives the power to praise.

5. Thou, whose benignant eye

In mercy looks on all,
Who sees the tear of misery,

And hears the mourners call

6. Up to thy dwelling place

Bear our frail spirits on,

Till they outstrip time's tardy pace,
And heaven on earth be won

138. The Sabbath welcomed.
1. WELCOME, sweet day of rest,
That saw the Lord arise;
Welcome to this reviving breast,
And these rejoicing eyes.

2. The King himself comes near,
And feasts his saints to-day;
Here we may sit, and see him here,
And love, and praise, and pray.

3. One day amidst the place

Where my dear Lord hath been,
Is sweeter than ten thousand days
Of pleasurable sin.

4. My willing soul would stay
In such a frame as this,
And sit and sing herself away
To everlasting bliss.

Prayer for the Spirit.

1. BLEST Comforter divine,
Let rays of heavenly love

Amid our gloom and darkness shine,
And guide our souls above.

2. Turn us, with gentle voice,
From every sinful way,
And bid the mourning saint rejoice,
Though earthly joys decay.

? By thine inspiring breath
Make every cloud of care,
And e'en the gloomy vale of death,
A smile of glory wear.

4. O, fill thou every heart

With love to all our race;
Great Comforter, to us impart

These blessings of thy grace.

GRATITUDE. L. M. MODERATO.

ROST.

1. My God, how end-less is thy love! Thy gifts are ev-ery evening new;

And morn-ing mer-cies from a-bove, Gen-tly dis - till like ear - ly dew.

[blocks in formation]

1. GOD of the morning, at whose voice The cheerful sun makes haste to rise, And like a giant doth rejoice,

To run his journey to the skies;

2. Oh, like the sun may I fulfill

The appointed duties of the day; With ready mind, and active will, March on and keep my heavenly way.

3. (But I shall rove and lose the race,

If God my Sun should disappear,
And leave me in this world's wide maze,
To follow every wandering star).
Lord, thy commands are clear and pure,
Enlightening our beclouded eyes;

Thy threatenings just, thy promise sure, Thy gospel makes the simple wise. 5. Give me thy counsel for my guide, And then receive me to thy bliss: All my desires and hopes beside Are faint, and cold, compared with this.

144. Morning Gratitude.
1. IN sleep's serene oblivion laid,

I safely passed the silent night;
Again I see the breaking shade,

I drink again the morning light. 2. New-born I bless the waking hour, Once more, with awe, rejoice to be: My conscious soul resumes her power, And springs, my guardian God, to thee!
