[blocks in formation]

me, And that thou bid'st me come to Thee! O Lamb of God, I come, I come!

* See also Hamburg. Repeat a portion of the last line, when it is short, as shown in the first stanza of each hymn. See "Just as I am.” p. 290.

1. O THOU, the contrite sinner's Friend! Who loving, lov'st them to the end, On this alone my hopes depend,

That Thou wilt plead for me. [for me.]

2. When weary in the Christian race,
Far off appears my resting place,
And, fainting, I mistrust Thy grace,
Then, Saviour, plead for me.

3. When Satan, by my sins made bold,
Strives from Thy cross to loose my hold,
Then with thy pitying arms enfold,
And plead, oh! plead for me.

4. And when my dying hour draws near,
Darkened with anguish, guilt, and fear,
Then to my fainting sight appear,
Pleading in heaven for me.

5. When the full light of heavenly day,
Reveals my sins in dread array,
Say Thou hast washed them all away—
O! say thou plead'st for me.

[blocks in formation]

2. If Thou should'st call me to resign What most I prize-it ne'er was mine; I only yield Thee what was Thine; "Thy will be done."

3. E'en if again I ne'er should see
The friend more dear than life to me,
Ere long we both shall be with Thee;
"Thy will be done."

4. Should pining sickness waste away
My life in premature decay,
My Father, still I strive to say,
"Thy will be done."

5. If but my fainting heart be blest
With Thy sweet Spirit for its guest,
My God, to Thee I leave the rest
"Thy will be done."

6. Renew my will from day to day,
Blend it with Thine, and take away
All that now makes it hard to say,
"Thy will be done."

1. THOUGH far from home, fatigued, opprest, 4. Were the whole realm of nature mine, Here we have found a place of rest; As exiles still, yet not unblest,

Because we cling to Thee, [to Thee.]

2. What though the world deceitful prove,
And earthly friends and hopes remove,
With patient, uncomplaining love,
Still can we cling to Thee.

3. Though oft we seem to tread alone Life's dreary waste with thorns o'ergrown,

Thy voice of love, in gentlest tone,
Whispers, "Still cling to Me."

4. Though faith and hope are often tried, We ask not, need not, aught beside, So safe, so calm, so satisfied

[blocks in formation]

That were a present far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all.

1. I LOVE thy kingdom, Lord,

The house of thine abode,

The church our blest Redeemer saved With his own precious blood.

[2. I love thy church, O God,

Her walls before thee stand Dear as the apple of thine eye, And graven on thy hand.]

3. If e'er to bless thy sons

My voice or hands deny,

These hands let useful skill forsake,
This voice in silence die.

4. If e'er my heart forget

Her welfare or her woe,
Let every joy this heart forsake,
And every grief o'erflow.

5. For her my tears shall fall,

For her my prayers ascend:

To her my cares and toils be given,
Till toils and cares shall end.

6. Beyond my highest joy

I prize her heavenly ways;

Her sweet communion, solemn vows,
Her hymns of love and praise.

Confession and Forgiveness.

1. OH, blessed souls are they,

Whose sins are covered o'er;
Divinely blest, to whom the Lord
Imputes their guilt no more.

2. They mourn their follies past,

And keep their hearts with care; Their lips and lives without deceit, Shall prove their faith sincere.

3. While I concealed my guilt,

I felt the fest'ring wound;
Till. I confessed my sins to thee,
And ready pardon found.

4. Let sinners learn to pray,

Let saints keep near the throne; Our help, in times of deep distress, Is found in God alone.

37. Praise for Mercies, Spiritual and Temporal.

OH bless the Lord my soul;

Let all within me join

To bless his great and holy name,
Whose favors are divine.

2. Oh bless the Lord, my soul.
Nor let his mercies lie
Forgotten in unthankfulness,
And without praises die.

3. 'Tis he forgives thy sins,

'Tis he relieves thy pain;
'Tis he that heals thy sicknesses,
And makes thee young again.

4. He crowns thy life with love

When ransomed from the grave:
He that redeemed my soul from hell
Hath sovereign power to save.
5. He fills the poor with good,

He gives the sufferers rest:
The Lord hath judgments for the proud,
And justice for th' oppressed.

6. Oh bless the Lord, my soul;

Let all within me join

To bless his great and holy name,
Whose favors are divine.

38. Committing the Soul to Jesus.
1. My spirit on thy care

Blest Saviour, I recline,
Thou wilt not leave me to despair:
For thou art Love divine.

2. In thee I place my trust,

On thee I calmly rest:

I know thee good, I know thee just,
And count thy choice the best.

3. Whate'er events betide,

Thy will they all perform,

Safe in thy breast, my head I hide,
Nor fear the coming storm.

4. Let good or ill befall,
It must be good for me,
Secure in having thee in all,
And having all in thee.

[blocks in formation]

1. "My times are in thy hand;"

My God I'd have them there,

My life, my friends, my soul, I leave
Entirely to thy care.

2. "My times are in thy hand;"

Whatever they may be,
Pleasing or painful, dark or bright,
As best they seem to thee.

3. "My times are in thy hand," I
Why should I doubt or fear?
My Father's hand will never cause
A child a needless tear.

4. "My times are in thy hand,"
I'll always trust in thee,
And after death at thy right hand
I shall for ever be.

O WEEP NOT. C. M. D.*

ARR. FROM "SPIRITUAL SONG S.

: 3

weep not evening lights

way;

{For hopes that like the stars decayed, Have left their mortal day:

For clouds of

sorrow will de part, And brilliant skies be given;

And tho' on earth the
Yet bliss a-waits the

tear may start,
holy heart, S

Amid the bow'rs of heaven.

*C. M. Double, by omitting the second repeat.

43. "The Things which are not seen are
Eternal."

1. O! WEEP not for the joys that fade
Like evening lights away;
For hopes that like the stars decayed
Have left their mortal day:
For clouds of sorrow will depart,
And brilliant skies be given;
And tho' on earth the tear may start,
Yet bliss awaits the holy heart,
Amid the bowers of heaven.

2. O weep not for the joys that pass
Into the lonely grave,

As breezes sweep the withered grass,
Along the restless wave:
For, tho' thy pleasure may depart,

And mournful days be given,
And lonely though on earth thou art,
Yet bliss awaits the holy heart,
When friends rejoice in heaven.

44.

A Funeral

1. I HEAR the deep-toned solemn bell
Its mournful music pour,
Some spirit now hath bid farewell,
To this terrestial shore,
And taken a returnless flight,
Beyond the silent tomb

Hath risen to heaven's beatic height,
Or sunk to hell's éternal night,
Where hope can never come.

2. I listen to each dying tone,

And mark each fearful pause;
Reflection, while I sit alone,

Her solemn inference draws:
How fast the precious moments roll,
How soon the hour will come!
Ah, soon for me that bell may toll,
Where then will my departed soul
Find its eternal home!
