If the way be drear,

If the foe be near,
Let not faithless fears o'ertake us,
Let not faith and hope forsake us;

For, through many a foe,
To our home we go.

[ocr errors]

When we seek relief

From a long-felt grief,
When temptations come alluring,
Make us patient and enduring;

Show us that bright shore
Where we weep no more.

Jesus, still lead on,

Till our rest be won;
Heavenly Leader, still direct us,
Still support, console, protect us,

Till we safely stand
In our Fatherland. Amen.

292 “This is My Name for ever; and this is

My memorial unto all generations.

PART I.

[ocr errors]

THE God of Abraham praise,

Who reigns enthroned above;
Ancient of everlasting days,

And God of love!
Jehovah, great I AM!
By earth and heaven confest;
I bow and bless the sacred Name,

For ever blest !

[ocr errors][ocr errors]

The God of Abraham praise, .

At Whose supreme command
From earth I rise, and seek the joys

At His right hand :
I all on earth forsake-

Its wisdom, fame, and power-
And Him my only portion make,

My Shield and Tower.
The God of Abraham praise,
Whose all-sufficient grace
Shall guide me all my happy days

To see His face ;
He calls a worm His friend !

He calls Himself my God!
And He will save me to the end,

Through Jesus' blood.
He by Himself hath sworn,

I on His oath depend,
I shall, on eagles' wings upborne,

To heaven ascend :
I shall behold His face,

I shall His power adore,
And sing the wonders of His grace

For evermore.

PART II.
TAOUGH nature's strength decay,

And earth and hell withstand,
To Canaan's bounds I urge my way

At His command :
The watery deep I pass

With Jesus in my view,
And through the howling wilderness

My way pursue.

2 The goodly land I see,

. With peace and plenty blest,
A land of sacred liberty,

And endless rest :
There milk and honey flow,

And oil and wine abound,
And trees of life for ever grow,

With mercy crowned.
There dwells the Lord our King,

The Lord, our Righteousness!
Triumphant o'er the world and sin,

The Prince of Peace:
On Zion's sacred height

His Kingdom still maintains ;
And glorious with His saints in light

For ever reigns !
4. He keeps His own secure,

He guards them by His side,
Arrays in garments white and pure

His spotless Bride;
With streams of sacred bliss,

With groves of living joys,
With all the fruits of Paradise,

He still supplies.

PART III.
THE God Who reigns on high

The great Archangels sing;
And “ Holy, Holy, Holy,” cry,

“Almighty King!
Who was and is the same,

And evermore shall be ;
Jehovah, Father, great I AM,

We worship Thee.”

Before the Saviour's face

The ransomed nations bow,
O’erwhelmed at His Almighty grace,

For ever new;
He shows His prints of love;

They kindle to a flame,
And sound through all the worlds above,

“Worthy the Lamb."

[ocr errors]

Before the Great Three-One

They all exulting stand,
And tell the wonders He hath done

Through all their land :
The listening spheres attend,

And swell the growing fame
And sing in songs which never end,

The wondrous Name.

[ocr errors]

The whole triumphant host
Give thanks to God on high;'
“Hail, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!"

They ever cry:
Hail, Abraham's God and mine;

I join the heavenly lays;
All might and majesty are Thine,

And endless praise! Amen.

293

Let us run with patience the race that

is set before us.

1 AWAKE our souls, away our fears,

Let every trembling thought be gone;
Awake, and run the heavenly race,
And put a cheerful courage on.

2 True 'tis a strait and thorny road,

And mortal spirits tire and faint;
But they forget the mighty God,

That feeds the strength of every saint. 3 The mighty God, Whose matchless power

Is ever new and ever young,
And firm endures, while endless years

Their everlasting circles run.

4 From Thee, the ever-flowing spring,

Our souls shall drink a fresh supply: While such as trust their native strength,

Shall melt away, and droop and die.

5 Swift as an eagle cuts the air,

We'll mount aloft to Thine abode;
On wings of love our souls shall fly,

Nor tire amidst the heavenly road! Amen.

294 "I will set up one Shepherd over them.

PSALM XXIII. (VERSION 1.)
1 THE Lord my pasture shall prepare,

And feed me with a shepherd's care;
His presence shall my wants supply,
And guard me with a watchful eye;
My noonday walks He shall attend,

And all my midnight hours defend.
2 When in the sultry glebe I faint,

Or on the thirsty mountain pant,
To fertile vales and dewy meads
My weary, wandering steps He leads,
Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow,
Amid the verdant landscape flow.
