him afar off, even into the palace of the high priest: and he sat with the servants, and warmed himself at the fire. II. THE SECOND OR STARRY Gen. i, 6, 7. And God said, Let Job xxxvii, 18. Hast thon with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten lookingglass? THE HEAVENLY BODIES. Gen. i, 14-18. And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven, to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven, to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven, to give light upon the earth. And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. Isa. xxx, 26. Moreover, the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be seven-fold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound. Rev. xii, 1. And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: Rev. xvi, 8. And the fouth angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire. REFLECTIONS. Ps. viii, 3, 4. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? P3. xix, 1-4. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth his handywork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.... Ps. xcvil, 6. The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory. Ps. cxxxvi, 7-9. To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever: The sun to 2 Sam. xxill 4. And he shall be as the light of the morning when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds. . . ... Job xi, 17. And thine age shall be clearer than the noon-day; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning. Job xxxviii. 12, 13. Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the day-spring to know his place; That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? Ps. lxv, 8. They also that dwell in the uttermost parts are afraid at thy tokens: thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice. James i, 11. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. MERIDIAN. Gen. xviii, 1. And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day. Exod. xvi, 21. And when the sun waxed hot, it [manna] melted. 1 Sam. xi, 9, 11. And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To-morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Ja P3. xix, 5, 6. Which [the sun] s/rule by day: for his mercy endur- besh; and they were glad. And it as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it.... Ps. civ, 19. He appointed the moon for seasons; the sun knoweth his going down. 1 Cor. xv, 40, 41. There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differeth from another star in glory. Ps. lxxii, 5, 7. They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations. In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth. Ps. cxxi. 6. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night eth for ever: The moon and Ps. cxlviii, 3-5. Praise ye him, Prov. xxv, 3. The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable. Jer. xxxi, 37. Thus saith the LORD. If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD. SUNRISE. Gen. xix, 23. The sun was risen Gen. xxxii, 31. And as he [Jacob] was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning-watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day. 2 Sam. iv, 5. And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came about the heat of the day to the house of Ish-bosheth, who lay on a bed at noon. Ps. xix. 6. ..... And there is nothing hid from the heat thereof Isa. iv, 6. And there shall be a tabernacle for a shadow in the daytime from the heat, and for a place of refuge, and for a covert from storm and from rain. Matth. xx, 12. Saying, these last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borue the burden and heat of the day. Rev. i, 16. . . . And his [Christ's] countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. SUNSET. Gen. xv, 17. And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. Gen. xxviil, 11. And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep. Josh. 1, 4. From the wilderness and this Lebanon, even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast. Judges xiv, 18. And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day, before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey. 2 Sam. iii, 35. And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or aught else, till the sun be down. Jer. xv, 9. She that hath born seven languisheth: she hath given up the ghost; her sun is gone done while it was yet day; she hath been ashamed and confounded....... Amos viil, 9. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day. LIGHT. Gen. 1, 4, 5. And God saw the John v, 35. He was a burning and a shining light; and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light. Eph. v, 13. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. 1 Thess. v, 5. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. DAY AND NIGHT. Gen. i, 5, 8. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day. light, that it was good: and God night into day: the light is short Job xxiv, 13. They are of those that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof. Job xxxvii, 15. Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine? Job xxxviii, 19-21. Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof, That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof? Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great? Ps. Ixxiv, 16. The day is thine, the night also is thine; thou hast prepared the light and the sun. Eccles. xi, 7. Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun. Ps. Ixxiv, 16. The day is thine, the night also is thine. The sun also Eccles. i, 5. ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. Jer. xili, 16. Give glory to the LORD your God, before he cause stumble upon the dark mountains, darkness, and before your feet and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness. John ix, 4. I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. John xi, 9. Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. MONTHS. Esther ill, 7. And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them. And he said unto him, So shall they seed be. Judges v, 20. They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera. Neh. iv, 21. So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared. Job iii, 9. Let the stars of the twilight thereof be dark. .... Job ix, 7, 9. Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not, and sealeth up the stars; maketh Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south. Which Job xxii, 12. Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are! Job xxvi, 13. By his Spirit he hath garnished the heavens, his hand hath formed the crooked serpent. Ps. cxlvii, 4. IIe telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. Jer. xxxi, 35. Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night. Matth. ii, 9, 10. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. Dan. vili, 10. Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. Rev. ii, 28. And I will give him the morning star. HEAVENLY BODIES AS HEAVENLY BODIES DARKENED OR PUT OUT. Isa. xiii, 10. For the stars of heaven, and the constellations thereof, shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. Isa. xxiv, 23. Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously. Isa. li, 6. Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath; for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner; but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abo lished. Isa. Ix, 19, 20. The sun shall be no more thy light by day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light unto thee: but the LORD shall be unto thee an everlasting light, and thy God thy glory. Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the LORD shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended. Jer. x, 2. Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. Ezek. xxxii, 7, 8. And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light. All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD. Joel ii, 10. The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. Joel iii, 15. The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. Amos viil, 9. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GoD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day. Mark xiii, 24, 25. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. Rev. vill, 12. And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise. NIGHT AND DARKNESS. Job v, 14. They meet with darkness in the day-time, and grope in the noon-day as in the night. Job vii, 4. When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? ..... Job xv, 30. He shall not depart out of darkness: the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away. Job xxxvi, 20. Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place. Ps. civ, 20. Thou makest dark ness, and it is night... Prov. vii, 9. In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night. Isa. viii, 22. And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to dark ness. Isa. xvi, 3. Take counsel, execute judgment; make thy shadow as the night in the midst of the noon-day; hide the outcasts; bewray not him that wandereth. Isa. xxi, 12. The watch man said, The morning cometh, and also the night: if ye will enquire, enquire ye, return, come. Jer. iv, 23. I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. Lam. ii, 2. He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light. Amos v, 8, 18, 20. Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night....... Woo the LORD! to what end is it for unto you that desire the day of you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light. Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it? Micah iii, 6. Therefore night shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them. John xi, 10. But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. Rom. xiii, 12. The night is far Judges vii, 19. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens. THE SCENE OF GOD'S GLORY, AND THE ABODE OF 2 Kings ii, 1. And it came to Ps. ii. 4. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision. Ps. viii, 1. O LORD our Lord, was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. him, Verily, verily, I say unto John 1, 51. And he saith unto you, Hereafter ye heaven open, and the angels of shall see God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. John iii, 31. He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. Acts iii, 21. Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy propliets since the world began. Acts vii, 56. And said, Behold, see the heavens opened, and the Son of men standing on the right hand of God. Gal. i. 8. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto watch of the night Jesus went how excellent is thy name in all you, let him be accursed. unto them, walking on the sea. Matth. xxiv, 43. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken the earth! who hast set thy glory Eph. iii, 15. Watch ye therefore; for ye know not when the mine eyes, O thou that dwellest master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing, or in the morning. Luke xii, 39. And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants. III. Ps. cxxiii, 1. Unto thee lift I up in the heavens. Ps. cxxxix, 8. If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there... exceeding glad; for great is your Matth. v, 12. Rejoice, and be reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Matth. vi, 10. ... Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Matth, xviii, 10. Take heed that Be-ye despise not one of these little ones: for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. THE THIRD HEAVENS. 1 Kings viii, 27. But will God. Indeed dwell on the earth? hold, the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded! 2 Chron ii, 6. And the houses of kings of Judah, shall be defiled as the houses upon whose roofs they the place of Tophet, because of all have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods. Jer. xliv, 17-19. But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drinkofferings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil. But since we left off to burn incense to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink-offerings unto her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine. And when he shekels of silver to his mother, his mother said, I had wholly dedicated the silver unto the LORD a graven image, and a molten from my hand for my son, to make image: now therefore I will re store it unto thee. Yet he restored his mother took two hundred the money unto his mother, and shekels of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a graven image, and a molten image: and they were in the house of Micah. Isa. xl, 19, 20. The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains. He that is so impoverished that he hath no oblation chooseth a tree that will not rot: he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved. Isa. xli, 6, 7. They helped every one his neighbour; and every one said to his brother, Be of good courage. So the carpenter ento-couraged the goldsmith, and he that smootheth with the hammer him that smote the anvil, saying, It is ready for the sodering: and Zeph. i, 4, 5.
