Before I had seen Bishop Newcome's conjecture, it had occurred to me that we should read nny for □ns; and, as one MS. reads

the words transposed, they might stand originally thus; ɔb nny nyn, " is it a time now for you?" And this might occasion the omission of the second word.

We should read uniformly either bene, as here, v. 14, and c. ii. 2, or new, as in other places: and this last is favoured by most MSS.

In order to complete the sense should we not supply the verb i, remember the word which I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, and my spirit abode in the midst of you: fear ye not?" I do not give the in the conversive power, as the words seem to refer to a former transaction, See Exod. xl. 34, and Num. v. 3. And the Sept. gave them the past sense.

7th. 21 can never be the true text. Bishop Newcome removes the difficulty by reading on, though he has some doubt in applying this word to a person. Might we then read 11 for 1821, and render the words thus and I will shake all the nations when he cometh, (who is) the desire of all nations; the pronouns being frequently understood? See Jerem. xliii. 11 and Malac. iii. 12. Consult Blayney's sermon on this text.

From the great similitude of the letters, it is not improbable that the preposition is dropped before 12. The objection, made by Dr Heberden, to interpreting this and the preceding verses of the Messiah, is, as I conccive, obviated by Mal. iii. 1. Besides, if these words are not understood of the kingdom of peace under the Messiah, they are not true in any other sense.

5th. Thirty-six MSS. read □n, which is the more usual way of writing this word. See v. 4, 6, and elsewhere. And this perhaps is as strong a proof of the corruption of the present text as can be produced; for, by parity of reason, if the word prophet should in one or two places be written without the vowel e, and in many others with it, would not every one conclude that the former was a mistake?

15th. If the Sept. and Syr. read the same word with the text, they derived it from 8, tumultuari; but, as one MS. reads 'INIUM, perhaps the right reading is D, “and with great anger am I

17th. It strikes me that the cities of the nations are here opposed

or ערים טובות we should read ,ערי מטוב to Jerusalem, and that, for ** ;ערים טוב

moreover, proclaim, saying, thus saith Jehovah, the Lord of hosts, the goodly cities shall yet be destroyed; but Jehovah will yet comfort Zion, and will yet choose Jerusalem.” See v. 21.

C. ii. 8th. The change of persons in this verse is very harsh; might we, therefore, venture to read nn, "after your glory I will send to the nations which have spoiled you;" i. e. I will punish them after your restoration to your own country?

I must confess it is a bold conjecture, but I humbly conceive that, for D, we should read ", and that the words should be rendered in this manner; "and he shall be a priest upon his throne, and the counsel of peace shall be between his teeth;" i. e. he shall speak peace unto his people, which was the peculiar characteristic of this priest and king. And we have something similar to this, c. ix. 10.

C. vii. 6th. May we suppose that the negative particle is dropped before the two first verbs here," and although ye did not eat, and although ye did not drink, yet did ye not eat and did ye not drink?” i. e. did ye not act as if you did? See Isai. lviii. 3, &c.
