The Syr. also renders the words, eritus and ingressus; and, if we take the words in this sense, they may allude to the waters of Jordan, which were descriptive of the land of Israel, and had once a miraculous healing virtue in them, see 2 Kings v. 14, but had now lost their efficacy; and, in this corrupted state, represented the reprobate condition of the Jews, who were now only fit for destruc tion. 13th. Three MSS. with several Marg. have for ; and, if there was no authority to support that reading, ought we not to conclude that this was only the error of the transcribers, when the one is an αяα XeyoμEVOV, and the other appears in innumerable places. The Sept. reads in the singular and gives all the verbs a passive signification; but, if the first verb is read in the plural, we should, with the other versions, read the rest in the same manner, and several MSS. read the two last in Hiph. 16th. - Thirty-one MSS. with the Keri, omit the third won, which is manifestly redundant, and we should certainly read П, with four MSS. instead of 18th. Five MSS. have, with the Keri, nan. 19th.-Nineteen MSS. with the Syr. read y in the singular, conformably to the preceding participle. 28th. Agreeable to twenty-three MSS. we should read, in c. xlvii. appears here. as it מריבת 19 29th. - Thirty-two MSS. have phne, which is certainly more grammatical. 30th. Twenty-three MSS. give in, which is certainly right. See Ps. Ixviii. 21. 31st. The Sept. and other versions read 70," and we have turned away from thy commandments," &c. and this seems to be the true reading. 11th. Vulg. and Ar, read .לשמך The Syr. reads thine own sake, O Jehovah:" and this seems to be justified from v. 19. 18th. Twenty-eight MSS. have po with the Keri. Thirty-nine MSS. read, with the Keri, nn, and eightytwo, with the Sept. and Vulg. non," and to make an end of sin:" and these readings seem to be preferable. And might we not read, likewise, on in the second place," and to complete the vision and the prophecy;" in the person of Christ, in whom all the visions and prophecies, from Abraham to Malachi, were fulfilled? 25th. Seventy MSS. read , and one supplies the word n ירושלם before 27th. Might we not render the latter part of this verse thus; “and because of the wing, or through the wing, by, of abominations, he shall make desolate even unto utter destruction; and that which is de termined shall be poured out upon the desolate:" the wing of abomina- ,ובהיכל יהיה שיקוץ reads "and in the temple shall be the abomination of desolation;" which reading is countenanced by the Sept. and seems to be still farther authorised by our blessed Lord's words, Matt. xxiv. 15.
