15th. — We are much obliged to the learned collator of the MSS. for his very judicious interpretation of this verse. See Gen. Dissert. sect. 45.

16th. Mr Bryant ingeniously conjectures that the dove was the standard of the Chaldæan army; and we should render the words, according to him, “ from the sword of the dove," i. e. the Chaldæans; as the eagle denoted the Roman army. See c. xxv. 38. But may not 7397, in both places, be erroneously written for 0717", “ from the sword of Jehovah, and because of the fierceness of Jehovah ?So the Syr. reads, c, xxv.

17th, It is observable that the Sept. reads the three last words differently from the present text, but does not translate them.

20th. — The admission of the learned collator's reading, 7738 ATT DJ, “ fugit Ap. (i. e. Apis,) tuus taurus,” v. 15, justified by forty-eight MSS. and the Sept. strengthens the sarcasın of this verse very much, it being the highest reproach upon the god Apis, that he could not defend his favourite heifer, Egypt, froin the Assyrian butcher, op, Mactator. See Grot. in loc. And, instead of the second xa, seventy-two MSS. read, with the Sept. na.

27th. - Fifty-four MSS. read yywia, which is more grammatical; and forty-two apy, which is evidently right. See c. xxxiii. 26.

There is the same transposition as in the beginning

C. xlvii. 1st. of c. xlvi.

6th. Grotius adopts the reading of the Sept. which is Dipsy instead of Opoy, the Anakims;" and, if we compare Josh. xi. 22, with this verse, it carries great probability with it: “oh! remnant of Anakims, how long wilt thou cut thyself!" The Chald, reads 318, “ roboris eorum." The Ar. Dipya, in Acchim. The Syr. omits this word. It is observable that the Sept. and Syr. have destroyed the beauty of the following prosopopeia by confounding the sentences.

7th. As it is most natural to suppose the prophet speaking these words in answer to the Philistines, it is better to read, with the Sept. and other versions, opon in the third person singular. “How can it be quiet?"

C. xlviii. 2d. The most literal translation of these words seems to be this: “ there shall be no more praise of Moah in Heshbon, (which was the metropolis of it,) they have devised,” &c.

4th. Nineteen MSS. 'read, with the Keri, 79yy, which is the usual form of this word.


Seventeen MSS. read, with the Keri, minibo.

6th. Twenty-two MSS. have yoys, and in this form it appears, c. xvii. 6.

7th. More than thirty MSS. read, with the Keri, viss, and thus it is written every where else. All the versions read onoa. Twenty MSS. have, with the Keri, 1774.

12th. Twelve MSS. have 171997, which the grammatical construction requires, and the Sept. reads 17965237.

26th, Eight MSS. have 171770wn, and so the Sept. reads with the Vulg. and Ar.

27th. From the first part of the verse I am inclined to follow the. interpretation put upon the last by Grotius from the Chaldee, reading, probably, 272 for 172 : (see Poole's Synops.) “ but for the multitude of thy words against him thou shalt go into captivity." See the Vulg. also. Thirty MSS. read, with the Keri, X303, which is more grammatical.

33d. Bishop Lowth very judiciously observes, that, instead of 777 777', we should read 7777777', the treader shall not tread,” as in Isai. c. xvi. 10,

36th. Several MSS, read Disegna in both places, which indicates the sense of the word more exactly. See Isaj. c. v. 12.

39th. Eight Mss. ready stly you, and flien the words will admit of this sense,

“ how is hiš praise broken down," which accords better with v. 2 and c. xlix. 25, and the preposition is wanting before wia.

45th. In comparing the different readings of this verse and NuinHers xxi. 28, (see Collations of the MSS.) it is observable, that, in the latter, the Sept reads wy instead of 4y, and ybat instead of bya.

It is likewise to be noted, that, in this verse, the Sept omit.

Might not the words in this verse admit of this translation, • behold, as a lion goeth up from the swelling of Jordan to his strong habitation, (i. é. his den,) so will l; as in a moment, run against her, (viz. Edom,) and what strong man shall I appoint over her, for who is like me; and who?" &c. The versions differ greatly.

20th. Should we not read anb, “ surely he will snatch away (i. e. as a lion) the least of the flock?” The Sept. reading 1300', the passive signification has the same sense. Thirty-five MSS. read in the first place.

21st. — The words in the latter part of the verse seem transposed, and we should probably, read bhup, as thirty-six MŠS. have it; and then it should be npys," the cry of their voice was lieard in the Red Sea,” See the Syr. and Vulg. vers.

23d. Thirteen MSS, read on instead of Dis; and, if we compare Isai. Ivii. 20, we shall find that that is the true reading. The versions vary much.

24th. Should we not, for the sake of the grammatical construction, read niny, 'have taken hold on her;" as we find the verb written, Isai. xxi. 3? By retaining the present reading, the commentators are exceedingly divided how to reconcile the verb 731y with the preceding words; (see Poole's Synopsis;) and to this purpose they have put upon it opposite significations; but, if we read on instead of 7%, as we have it twice in v. 20, the sense is plain and unembarrassed.

Surely the city of praise is forsaken.” The vulg. reads 121° 7°8.

28th. Nineteen MSS. read 78877393), and this is the only place where it

appears in the form of the present text.

30th. More than fourscore MSS. have, with the Alex. Sept. (besides more than fifty of the Keri MSS.) obeby in the second place, which the context requires; and so the Vulg. Chald. and Ar.

34th. There is the same transposition in the beginning of this verse as in c. xlvi. Ist, and elsewhere. The Syr. vers. is right.

36th. Thirty-eight MSS. read ninn), which agrees better with the preceding word; and seventeen have, with the Keri, boy, which the foregoing readings justify, as well as the following ones.

39th. Twenty-four MSS. give, with the Keri, a'wx, which is more regular.
