26th. Would it not be better to translate the first part of this verse, with Oleaster, blessed of the Lord Jehovah be Shem? See Poole's Synopsis.

29th. More than one hundred and sixty MSS. read, with the Sam., which the grammatical construction requires. See Collat. MSS. Gen. Dissert. and c. v. 23.

19th. The limits of the land of Canaan are described very differently by the Sam. text and the Hebrew text; and the former seems the more exact, which runs thus: "And the border of the Canaanites is from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates, and unto the western sea." See xv. 18.

19th.

Four MSS. with the Keri, read, and this is counte nanced by the Sept.

20th. The Sam. reads the three last words but one, with the plural ; and so the Sept. seems to have read, and this reading is certainly preferable.

21st. It is evident that the first part of this verse is imperfect; and, to complete the sense, I would propose to read, instead of Da; and, reading the following sentence in a parenthesis, render the whole thus: "And to Shem were born sons, (he was the father of all the children of Heber,) the brother of Japhet the elder."

we must give nu a plural sense as it has Ezek. xxiii. 44, and the whole verse will run thus: and Terah took Abram his son, and Lot, the son of Haran, his son, and Sarai and Milcah, his daughters in law, the wives of Abram, his son; and he went with, or he brought, them from Ur of the Chaldees to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran and dwelt there. 3, Sam. &c.

Seventy-six MSS. have, with the Sam. , which the grammatical construction necessarily requires.

16th. The additions and transpositions in the Sam. text give us a better connection of the whole verse, thus: "And he treated Abram well for her sake, and he had sheep and oxen, a great abundance of cattle, and men servants, and maid servants, and he asses, and she asses, and camels."

Seventy MSS. have, with the Sam. text, in; and eighteen, with the Sam. nun, which the grammatical construction requires.
