Nero is a good old dog.

One day he came to the door.

He barked and barked and barked.

Mamma said, "Go away, Nero."

But he did not go.

Then mamma went to the door.

"What is the matter, Nero?" she

said.

"Oh, I see.

You have a little dog with you.

The little dog is lame.

Can I help him?"

"Bow wow, bow wow," said Nero.

[blocks in formation]

You see the little dog is lame."

Mamma looked at the little dog.
She looked at the lame foot.

66

You have a thorn in your foot.

I will take it out," she said.

"Poor little dog, does the thorn

make you lame?"

Mamma took the thorn out of the

little dog's foot.

Then Nero jumped and barked and

said, "Bow wow.

Thank you, thank you.

I knew you would help the poor

little fellow."

Little May is crying.

"Why are you crying, little May?"

"I have broken my doll.

My poor doll! What can I do?"

66

Don't cry, May.

You can get

another doll."

'But that will be a new

doll," says May.

"I love the old doll best.

Here is mamma!

She will know what to

[Draw.]

do."

Now May is not crying.

Mamma can mend the broken doll.

Did you ever see a lion?

He lives far away, in the woods.

You can ride a horse.

You can feed the cow and the sheep.

But the lion is wild.

Do not go near him.

"How do you do, sir?" says Jack.

This is my pony, Rollo.

He has lost a shoe.

Can you make a new shoe for him?
