A testimony concerning INCREASE WOODWARD, by her daughter S. M. I feel it due to the memory of a beloved parent, to attempt a delineation of some of those virtues which shone conspicuously in her character, if happily the example of so dedicated a servant of Christ may prove a strength and encouragement to the christian traveller. She was the youngest daughter of Jacob and Clemence Dennis, of Shrewsbury, New Jersey, and was born the 16th of 12th month, 1742. From her own account as given in a letter to her father, it appears that in very early life she was brought under religious impressions; the strait gate and narrow way which leads to life, were clearly opened to her view; whilst the broad way that leads to destruction fearfully presented, and filled her with dread, lest she should be found amongst those who go in thereat. In this state of distress she tried to pray in her own strength, but could find no rest until she was taught to wait God's VOL. XII.-1 |
