If the Governors found by the answers to the queries issued before the augmentation of a cure that its yearly value had been by any means increased since the date of the new returns, but that it still did not amount to 50l. they gave to it so many lots as carried up to 50l. per annum.

The Governors do not in any of their augmentations give a less sum than 2007. and where more is required which sum either on account of value out of the Royal Bounty, or on account of population out of the Parliamentary Grants, they give so many more sums, or lots as they are called, (whether there be an actual drawing of lots or not,) of 200l. as the particular case may require. This is to the advantage of many cures; for instance, if a cure had been found to be of the value of 417. 19s. 6d. two lots or sums of 2007. have been given to carry it up to 57l. 19s. 6d. because one lot would have left it still under 50l. viz. 49l. 19s. 6d.

If the Govenors found by the answers to the beforementioned queries respecting a cure, that its yearly value had decreased since the new returns, they nevertheless adopted the value stated in the new returns, that being their general practice, and this rule. governing them in all cases, equal justice was rendered to all livings of the same scale, as the cause of such reduction in value, generally speaking, may be fairly supposed to apply nearly the same to all of them.

Queries as to the duty, annual value, and other particulars, are always issued before the augmentation of

a living by the Governors by benefaction, lot, or on account of population, and as well out of the Royal Bounty Fund as the Parliamentary Grant Fund.

The Governors, pursuant to the before-mentioned The Gorule under the Royal sign manual, dated the 22d day of March, 1824, are now proceeding to augment to 60l. per annum, by means of the Royal Bounty Fund, by lot, all livings which in the new returns are certified as not exceeding, and which do not exceed that yearly value; and to meet benefactions of 200l. or the value thereof in lands, or tithes, or rent-charges of 157. per annum, with 2007. out of the same fund, where the annual value of livings to which such benefactions are given, do not exceed 200l. per annum.

The proceedings of the Governors, as before de- Mode of scribed, in augmenting Livings up to 50l. per annum, will sufficiently shew how the value of livings now to by tenebe augmented by lot is to be ascertained. And as to benefactions, whenever an incumbent of a living under 200l. per annum, has one or more to propose in order to obtain a corresponding sum or sums out of the Royal Bounty, or 300l. for each 2007. out of the Parliamentary Grants; his course is to follow the directions contained in another part of this work which treats of benefactions.

An account of the augmentations made by the Governors out of the Royal Bounty Fund is set forth in the Appendix.

In aid of the Royal Bounty Fund.

Augmentation of Small Livings by means of the
Parliamentary Grants.

In the year 1809, in pursuance of the most gracious Parliament message of his late Majesty King George the Third to both Houses of Parliament, the sum of 100,000l. was granted by Parliament, and included in the appropriation act in aid of the Fund already vested in the Governors of the Royal Bounty by Queen Anne for the augmentation of the maintenance of the Poor Clergy, according to the rules and regulations by which the funds of the Corporation are governed; and since that period, the Parliament, prompted by the same public spirit, have munificiently granted to the Governors in aid of the same Fund, the sum of 100,000l. in each of the following years, viz. 1810, 1811, 1812, 1813, 1814, 1815, 1816, 1818, 1819; and in 1820, (in pursuance of the most gracious message of his Majesty King George the Fourth,) which together with that granted in 1809, make up the sum of 1,100,000l.

The first sum of 100,000l. or the greatest part of it, was disposed of by the Governors in augmenting, by ing Small lot, livings of inferior value, without reference to the amount of population, and in meeting benefactions of 2007. with 300l. in pursuance of a rule under the Royal sign manual, bearing date the 23rd day of June, 1810. Augmentations out of the Parliamentary Grants, on account of population, were first made by the Governors in pursuance of a rule under the Royal sign manual, bearing date the 13th day of May, 1811; by cording to which they were enabled to give a preference to livings fitly qualified, and not exceeding 150l. per annum, the

The Governors have appropriated the Parliamentary Appropri Grants; except such part of the first Grant as was dis- Parliamenposed of in augmenting by lot Livings of inferior value, Grants. By a subsequent rule under the Royal Sign Manual, bearing date the 14th day of June, 1820, the Governors are further enabled out of the Parliamentary Grants to augment Livings fitly qualified, and not exceeding 200l. per annum, according to the new returns, the population of which exceeds 300 persons.

According to the present private regulations of the Governors, made on the 17th day of June, 1816, founded on the rule of the 14th day of May, 1814; the Governors have, in all cases where application has been made to them, augmented livings found by them

And all livings of less annual value than 100l. to to 1007. per that nominal amount where the population amounted to 500 persons; and the Governors are now proceeding to augment according to the said scale all livings entitled thereto, and which, for whatever reason, have been omitted to be brought under their consideration. They have not yet proceeded to augment on account of population livings above the annual value of 150l., nor where the number of inhabitants is less than 500, for want of funds, though warranted by the before-mentioned rule of the 14th day of June, 1820, so to augment livings not exceeding 2001. per annum, the populatian of which amounts to or exceeds 300 persons.
