The following is the Rule under the Royal sign Manual made soon after the first grant by Parliament of £100,000, to the Gover

nors.

GEORGE R.

George the Third, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland King, Defender of the Faith, &c. to all to whom these presents shall come, greeting. Whereas the Governors of the Bounty of Queen Anne, for the Augmentation of the maintenance of the poor Clergy, have humbly represented unto us, that, in pursuance of our most gracious Message to both Houses of Parliament, the sum of one hundred thousand pounds hath been lately granted in aid of the fund already vested in the said Governors by our said Royal Predecessor Queen Anne, for the augmentation of the maintenance of the poor Clergy, and to be applied in the increase of the maintenance of the poor Clergy according to the rules and regulations by which the funds of that Corporation are governed; that, with a view to promote the residence of the

Clergy on their Benefices, the Governors have agreed upon and prepared the following Rule, and have humbly proposed that the same may be approved, confirmed, and established by us, under our Royal Sign Manual, if we in our Royal Wisdom should so think fit, viz.

"That, when a living shall be augmented, either by Lot or Benefaction, out of the said additional fund, and it shall appear by the immediate preceding returns, made in pursuance of the late statute for promoting residence, and by the returns of Livings under one hundred and fifty pounds per annum, made to the Governors in pursuance of a late address to us by the House of Lords for that purpose, or otherwise, that the Incumbent does not reside or perform the duties of such Living in person, or possesses another Living of the value of one hundred and fifty pounds per annum, the Governors may be enabled to direct that the money appropriated for such augmentation shall be reserved, and that the interest thereof shall accumulate into principal for the benefit of the Living, and neither the principal or interest be invested in land or other hereditaments (except in providing a house and offices within the parish suitable for the residence of the Minister) until an Incumbent not possessed of another Living of the value of one hundred and fifty pounds per annum, shall bona fide reside upon or perform the duties of the said augmented Living in person."

And the said Governors have further represented, that by the fourth Rule contained in the Charter granted by our said royal predecessor, bearing date the fifth day of March 1713-14, for the management of the said original fund, it is directed, that in order to encourage Benefactions from others, and thereby the sooner to complete the good that was intended by the said Bounty, the Governors may give the sum of two hundred pounds to Cures not exceeding thirty-five pounds per annum where any persons will give the same or greater sum or value in lands or tithes that by another Rule, made in the thirtieth year of the reign of his late Majesty King George the Second, the said Governors were empowered to give two hundred pounds to Cures not exceeding fortyfive pounds per annum (since increased to eighty pounds per annum), where any persons, in order to obtain the Bounty, would give the same or a greater sum in money, or the value thereof in lands, tithes, or rent-charges: but the said Governors, humbly conceiving that it would tend more to encourage Benefactions from others, and thereby the sooner complete the good that was intended, if the sum to be given by the said Governors out of the said additional fund was three hundred pounds, where any persons, in order to obtain the Bounty, will give two hundred pounds or a

greater sum in money, or the value thereof in lands or tithes, or a clear rent-charge or annuity of fifteen pounds; the said Governors have therefore humbly prayed us,

"That the sum to be given by them to each Cure which shall be augmented by benefaction out of the said additional fund be three hundred pounds, where any persons, in order to obtain the Bounty, will give two hundred pounds, or a greater sum in money, or the value thereof in lands or tithes, or a clear rent-charge or annuity of fifteen pounds,"-if we in our royal wisdom shall so think fit.

We have thought fit to approve of the said Rule, and do by these presents approve and establish the same accordingly, and do hereby direct that the same be added to the other Rules formerly given and established by our late Royal predecessor Queen Anne, by her Letters Patent granted as above mentioned to the Governors of the said Bounty for the augmentation of the maintenance of the poor Clergy.

Given at our Court at St. James's, the twelfth day of September 1809, in the forty-ninth year of our reign.

By his Majesty's command,

The following Rule was added, viz.

LIVERPOOL.

"That the said Governors may be enabled to accept Bene1810, 50th factions for Cures which were not returned into the Exchequer, or to the said Governors, previous to the Returns lately made of Cures not exceeding one hundred and fifty pounds per annum, and which a Benefac shall not exceed the improved yearly value of one hundred and twenty pounds fixed and certain, the population and duty, and stipend of other circumstances, justifying in their opinion the acceptance of such Benefactions; and to give to each of such Cures either two hundred pounds from their said original fund, or three hundred pounds from the said additional fund, where any persons, in order to obtain the Bounty, will give two hundred pounds or a greater sum in money, or the value thereof in lands or tithes, or a clear rent-charge or annuity of fifteen pounds,"

Two other Rules were added, viz.
