IF this be, Lord, thy way,
Then who can hope to gain
That prize such numbers never seek,
Such numbers seek in vain?

"Tis thine almighty grace

That can suffice alone,

Thou giv'st us strength to run the race, And then bestow'st the crown.

Cheer up, ye trav'ling souls!

On Jesu's aid rely:

He sees us when we see not him,

And always hears our cry.

4 He gently leads us on;

Protects from fatal harms;

And, when we faiut, and cannot walk,
He bears us in his arms.

He guides and moves our steps;

For, tho' we seem to move,

His Spirit all the motion gives,

By springs of faith and love.

Soon will life's journey cease,

And ev'ry foe be past;

Though death remains, he but remains

To be subdu'd at last!

1 IMMANUEL shows thee what thou art,—

How naked, blind, and poor!

Discloses all thy wretched heart,
To make thee prize him more.
2 But when thy consolations teem
From Christ, the mystic rock,
Boast in the Fountain, not the stream;
The sample's not the stock.

3 The streams may turn another way,
Run ebb, or muddy flow,

Or dry up ere another day,-
But not the Fountain so!

4 The Fountain, always full and clear,
Flows on serenely still;
Is free and open all the year,

"Whom resist steadfast in the faith." 1 Pet. v. 1.

In all our worst afflictions,

When furious foes 'surround us;
When troubles vex, And fears perplex,
And Satan would confound us;

When foes to God and goodness
We find ourselves by feeling,
To do what's right Unable quite,
And almost as unwilling;

When, like the restless ocean,
Our hearts cast up uncleanness,

Flood after flood, With mire and mud,
And all is foul within us;

When love is cold and languid,
And diff'rent passions shake us ;
When hope decays, And God delays,
And seems to quite forsake us;—

Then to maintain the battle,
With soldier-like behaviour;
To keep the field, and never yield,
But firmly eye the Saviour;-

To trust his gracious promise,
Thus hard beset with evil,-
This-this is faith, Will conquer death,
And overcome the devil!

"Looking unto Jesus." Heb. xii. 2. 1 WHY should I fear the darkest hour, Or tremble at the tempter's power? Jesus is my Almighty Tower!

2 Though hot the fight, why quit the field, Why must I either flee or yield? Jesus is my protecting shield!

3 When creature-comforts fade and die, Worldlings may weep, but why should I? Jesus still lives, and still is nigh!

4 Though all the flocks and herds were dead, My soul a famine need not dread, For Jesus is my living bread!

5 I know not what may soon betide, Or how my wants shall be supply'd; But Jesus knows, and will provide!

6 Though sin would fill me with distress, The throne of grace I dare address; For Jesus is my righteousness!

7 Though faint my pray'rs, and cold my love, My steadfast hope shall not remove, While Jesus loves, and pleads above! 8 Against me earth and hell combine; But on my side is pow'r divine; Jesus is All, and He is mine!

"I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the Name of the Lord." Zeph. iii. 12.

[ocr errors]

POOR and afflicted," Lord, are thine; Among the great unfit to shine,

But tho' the world may think it strange, They would not with the world exchange. 2 "Poor and afflicted:" Yes, they are, They're not exempt from grief and care; But he who sav'd them by his blood, Makes ev'ry sorrow work for good. 3 "Poor and afflicted:" "Tis their lot; They know it, and reject it not: "Twould ill become them to refuse The state their Saviour deign'd to choose. 4" Poor and afflicted:" Yet they sing; For Jesus is their conq'ring King: Thro' suff'rings, perfect now he reigns O'er all their sorrows, foes, and sins.

5 "Poor and afflicted:" But ere long
They'll join the grand celestial throng;
Their griefs shall then for ever close
In sacred, blest, divine repose!

"Put on the whole armour of God."
Eph. vi. 11.

1 GIRD thy loins up, Christian soldier,
Lo! thy Captain calls thee out:
Let the danger make thee bolder;
War in weakness; dare in doubt!
Buckle on thy heav'nly armour;
Patch up no inglorious peace;
Let thy courage wax the warmer
As thy foes and fears increase!

2 Bind thy golden girdle round thee-
Truth-to keep thee firm and tight:
Never shall the foe confound thee
While the truth maintains thy fight!
Righteousness within thee rooted,
In a sense will take thy part;
But let righteousness imputed
Be the breastplate of thy heart!
3 Shod with gospel preparation,

In the paths of promise tread;
Let the hope of free salvation,
As a helmet, guard thy head.
