1 3 IF this be, Lord, thy way, "Tis thine almighty grace That can suffice alone, Thou giv'st us strength to run the race, And then bestow'st the crown. Cheer up, ye trav'ling souls! On Jesu's aid rely: He sees us when we see not him, And always hears our cry. 4 He gently leads us on; 5 6 Protects from fatal harms; And, when we faiut, and cannot walk, He guides and moves our steps; For, tho' we seem to move, His Spirit all the motion gives, By springs of faith and love. Soon will life's journey cease, And ev'ry foe be past; Though death remains, he but remains To be subdu'd at last! 1 IMMANUEL shows thee what thou art,— How naked, blind, and poor! Discloses all thy wretched heart, 3 The streams may turn another way, Or dry up ere another day,- 4 The Fountain, always full and clear, 1 2 3 For whosoever will! 413. P. M. "Whom resist steadfast in the faith." 1 Pet. v. 1. In all our worst afflictions, When furious foes 'surround us; When foes to God and goodness When, like the restless ocean, Flood after flood, With mire and mud, 4 5 6 When love is cold and languid, Then to maintain the battle, To trust his gracious promise, "Looking unto Jesus." Heb. xii. 2. 1 WHY should I fear the darkest hour, Or tremble at the tempter's power? Jesus is my Almighty Tower! 2 Though hot the fight, why quit the field, Why must I either flee or yield? Jesus is my protecting shield! 3 When creature-comforts fade and die, Worldlings may weep, but why should I? Jesus still lives, and still is nigh! 4 Though all the flocks and herds were dead, My soul a famine need not dread, For Jesus is my living bread! 5 I know not what may soon betide, Or how my wants shall be supply'd; But Jesus knows, and will provide! 6 Though sin would fill me with distress, The throne of grace I dare address; For Jesus is my righteousness! 7 Though faint my pray'rs, and cold my love, My steadfast hope shall not remove, While Jesus loves, and pleads above! 8 Against me earth and hell combine; But on my side is pow'r divine; Jesus is All, and He is mine! "I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the Name of the Lord." Zeph. iii. 12. POOR and afflicted," Lord, are thine; Among the great unfit to shine, But tho' the world may think it strange, They would not with the world exchange. 2 "Poor and afflicted:" Yes, they are, They're not exempt from grief and care; But he who sav'd them by his blood, Makes ev'ry sorrow work for good. 3 "Poor and afflicted:" "Tis their lot; They know it, and reject it not: "Twould ill become them to refuse The state their Saviour deign'd to choose. 4" Poor and afflicted:" Yet they sing; For Jesus is their conq'ring King: Thro' suff'rings, perfect now he reigns O'er all their sorrows, foes, and sins. 5 "Poor and afflicted:" But ere long "Put on the whole armour of God." 1 GIRD thy loins up, Christian soldier, 2 Bind thy golden girdle round thee- In the paths of promise tread; |
