THE DUCK AND THE CHICKENS.

One day Fred put a duck's egg in the hen's nest. Going into the barn some time after, what do you think he saw? Three little chickens and a little duck.

The hen thinks they are all chickens, and she says to them, "I shall not get your food for you now; you are

getting too big for that.

Now you

will have to scratch for your food." See how the chickens scratch the ground for worms. That is the food a chicken likes to eat. Look at the big worm this little chicken has.

The little duck is not with them. Is she, too, scratching the ground for worms?

No, she is near the pond. When

she sees the water, she jumps into the pond to have a swim.

See the hen run after the little duck.
Will the hen jump into
the pond? No, if she
does,she will drown. The
hen can not swim. She
walks on the ground.
"Come back,

come

back," said the hen to the little duck,

66 you will drown."

"I shall not drown," said the little "See how I can swim."

See! here is a big rat. He sees the

box, and he sees the open door. Do you think he will get the cheese?

Yes, he walks into the box and eats the cheese. He does not think that Ida has put the cheese into the box to catch him.

"This is good cheese," said the rat. "I shall come here every day to see if I can get some."

But when he tried to get out of the box, he could not. He tried and tried to get out, but he could not open the door.

Here comes Ida with her big white cat. She says, "Now I shall catch you, you bad rat. I shall open the door and let you out, but my cat will eat you."

Ida opened the door of the box, and the cat made a jump to get the rat. But how the rat did run! Ida did not
