MORNING.

929

[blocks in formation]

My voice shalt thou hear in the morning.
Ps. v. 3.

1 AWAKE, my soul, and with the sun

Thy daily stage of duty run:

Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2 Thy precious time misspent, redeem;
Each present day, thy last, esteem;
Improve thy talent with due care;
For the Great Day thyself prepare.
3 In conversation be sincere;

Keep conscience as the noon-tide clear.
Think how All-seeing God thy ways,
Thy every secret thought, surveys.
4 Wake, and lift up thyself, my heart,
And with the angels bear thy part,
Who, all night long, unwearied sing
High praise to the Eternal King.

5 All praise to Thee, who safe hast kept,
And hast refreshed me while I slept.
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake.

6 Lord, I my vows to Thee renew:
Scatter my sins as morning dew:
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

7 Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say;

That all my powers, with all their might,
In Thy sole glory may unite.

8 Praise God from whom all blessings flow:
Praise Him, all creatures here below:
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

WATTS.

930 In the morning shall my prayer prevent thee.

Psa. lxxxviii. 13.

1 OD of the morning, at whose voice

And like a giant doth rejoice

To run his journey through the skies:

2 From the fair chambers of the east
The circuit of his race begins,

And without weariness or rest,

rise,

Round the whole earth he flies and shines:

3 O like the sun may I fulfil

The appointed duties of the day;

With ready mind and active will

March on and keep my heavenly way.

4 Lord, Thy commands are clean and pure,
Enlightening our beclouded eyes;
Thy threatenings just, Thy promise sure,
Thy gospel makes the simple wise.
5 Give me Thy counsel for my guide,
And then receive me to Thy bliss;
All my desires and hopes beside
Are faint and cold compared with this.

BARTHOLOMEW.

And Samuel lay until the morning.
1 Sam. iii. 15.

ORD, from my bed again I rise,
To offer up the sacrifice

Of praise and prayer to Thee:
I laid me down to sleep at night;
I trusted in Thine arm of might ;-
Thine arm protected me.

2 Uphold Thy servant through the day;
Direct my steps in wisdom's way ;
Let me not turn aside:

Let me not walk where scorners walk,
And sinful men profanely talk;

Still be my God and Guide.

WATTS.

Day unto day uttereth speech.-Ps. xix. 2.
NCE more, my soul, the rising day
Salutes thy waking eyes;

ONCE

Once more, my voice, thy tribute pay
To Him that rules the skies.

2 Night unto night His name repeats;
The day renews the sound

Wide as the heaven on which He sits,
To turn the seasons round.

3 'Tis He supports my mortal frame,
My tongue shall speak His praise;
My sins would rouse His wrath to flame,
And yet His wrath delays.

4 Great God, let all my hours be Thine,
Whilst I enjoy the light,

Then shall my sun in smiles decline,
And bring a pleasant night.

933 The Lord's mercies are new every morning.

[ocr errors]

Lam. iii. 22, 23.

TIMELY happy, timely wise,

Hearts that with rising morn arise;

Eyes that the beam celestial view,

Which evermore makes all things new.

2 New every morning is the love

Our wakening and uprising prove;

Through sleep and darkness safely brought,
Restored to life and power and thought.

3 New mercies, each returning day, Hover around us while we pray; New perils past, new sins forgiven, New thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven. 4 If on our daily course our mind

Be set to hallow all we find,

New treasures still, of countless price,
God will provide for sacrifice.

5 The trivial round, the common task
Will furnish all we ought to ask;
Room to deny ourselves; a road
To bring us daily nearer God.
6 Only, O Lord, in Thy dear love,
Fit us for perfect rest above;
And help us, this and every day,
To live more nearly as we pray.

Whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Cor. x. 31.

F

NORTH in Thy name, O Lord, I go,
My daily labour to pursue;

Thee, only Thee, resolved to know,
In all I think, or speak, or do.

2 The task Thy wisdom has assigned,
O let me cheerfully fulfil;

In all Thy works Thy presence find,
And prove Thy good and perfect will.
3 Thee may I set at my right hand,
Whose eyes my inmost substance sce;
And labour on at Thy command,
And offer all my works to Thee.
4 Give me to bear Thine easy yoke,
And every moment watch and pray;
And still to things eternal look,
And hasten to Thy glorious day.

5 For Thee delightfully employ

Whate'er Thy bounteous grace hath given;
And run my even course with joy,
And closely walk with Thee to heaven.

MORNING OR EVENING.

L.M.

Evening and morning...will I pray.

Ps. lv. 17.

1 M Thy gifts are every evening new;

Y God, how endless is Thy love!

And morning mercies from above
Gently distil like early dew.

WATTS.

2 Thou spreadst the curtains of the night,
Great Guardian of my sleeping hours;
Thy sovereign word restores the light,
And quickens all my drowsy powers.
3 I yield my powers to Thy command,
To Thee I consecrate my days;
Perpetual blessings from Thy hand
Demand perpetual songs of praise.

Now the eventide was come.-Mark xi. 11.

HOSANNA, with a cheerful sound,

To God's upholding hand;

Ten thousand snares attend us round,
And yet secure we stand.

2 That was a most amazing power
That raised us with a word;

And every day and every hour
We lean upon the Lord.

8 Our life is forfeited by sin

To God's avenging law;

We own Thy grace, Immortal King,
In every breath we draw.
