heart, or I feel them not; thou must give me faith, or I believe not in Christ as my only hope; thou must sanctify me by thy Spirit, or I remain impure and unholy. Oh Almighty God, I beseech thee to assist me in giving myself up to thee in the solemn vow of confirmation. Strengthen me with thy heavenly grace, that I may indeed take upon myself the promises which were made for me at my baptism. Pardon my ignorance and forgetfulness of those promises the many ways in which I have broken them in thought and word and deed. I implore of thee, oh Lord, the free forgiveness of all my sins, for the sake of Jesus Christ. I plead no other name, but only the name of thy dear Son. May his precious blood cleanse me from all sin. Lord, make me to feel my helplessness as well as my sinfulness. Oh God, forasmuch as without thee, I am not able

to please thee, mercifully grant that thy Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule my heart. Be with me in thine own house during the solemnities of that ordinance which binds me to thyself for ever, and when the solemn question of thy servant, the Bishop, is put to me, oh may I in sincerity and in truth be willing to yield up myself to thee-willing to give this vain and wicked world-to forsake and avoid every thing which may make me forget that thou alone art worthy to be feared and loved. May thy grace confirm and fix my heart in thy good ways, so that I may love thee more and serve thee better. Neither pray I for myself alone; bless all who shall be confirmed with me. Assist them with thy Holy Spirit, and should there be any who will presume to appear in thy presence without having sought for that preparation of the heart

which will render this service acceptable in thy sight; should there be any who are halting between two opinions-who name the name of Christ, and yet do not depart from iniquity, oh may thy mercy and power, ere it be too late, bring back these wandering sheep into the path of life. Almighty God, hear my prayer, and do more for all of us than we can ask or think, for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

A PRAYER AFTER CONFIRMATION.

MOST MERCIFUL FATHER, I bless thee that I have been permitted to approach thee in the presence of thy church, to join myself to the number of thy faithful people. Oh forgive the wanderings of my heart, the infirmities which accompanied my performance of this solemn duty,

and accept my praises for every good thought, every holy desire, and every sinmind in it. And now,

Let not the world get possession of my heart now dedicated to thy service; let not the pomps and vanities I have now solemnly renounced become the objects of my desires; let me not dare to think that I can do what thou hast told me I cannot do-cannot serve God and Mammon; but may I advance in thy true faith and fear, and abound in all the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Enable me to abide in Christ my Saviour as the branch abideth in the vine. Assist me to glorify thy name, to adorn thy gospel, and to fulfil all the duties to which I may be called. to me, oh Jesus, in the breaking of bread. May I experience the Lord's supper to be a refreshing means of grace, so that I may return from thy table with my corruptions subdued, my graces increased, and my soul encouraged with an enlarged heart to run the way of thy commandments. And oh Lord, grant that I may never go back from thy ways, never be ashamed of the gospel of Christ-never be frightened from thy service by the crosses and difficulties I may meet with, but defend me with thy heavenly grace, that I may continue thine for ever, and daily increase in thy Holy Spirit more and more, until I come to thy everlasting kingdom. These mercies I humbly implore in the name and through the mediation of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
