WITH A LIFE,
THOMAS BABINGTON MACAULAY.
NEW YORK: BLAKEMAN AND MASON.
CINCINNATI: RICKEY AND CARROLL.
The Memoir of Goldsmith which accompanies this edition is taken from the tenth volume of the new edition of the Encyclopædia Brittanica.
The Anecdotes of Goldsmith which follow the Memoir, were collected by the Rev. John Mitford, and appended to his Life of Goldsmith. He
says: “I should with reluctance have deprived my readers of what information might be collected from them ; but I am not sufficiently satisfied of the veracity of all to authorize their reception in the narrative of the Poet's Life. I have, therefore, collected them into an Appendix, where they appear under the sanction of the narrators' names, who are alone responsible for their truth.”
