The Second Epistle general of PETER.

THERE is no book of the New Testament the genuineness of which is so disputed, and of which the proofs of this are so uncertain, as this epistle. At first, it was regarded with doubt by many in the early church; but ultimately its canonical claims were generally admitted. Though differing in many minute particulars, as respects style and language, from the first, the resemblances between the two are such and so many as to overbalance this.

With respect to many things in this epistle-more especially the second chapter-it has to be borne in mind that the apostle is probably combating the error in doctrine and impurity in practice of the Gnostics, and writes in a manner very well understood by those to whom he wrote.

This epistle greatly resembles the epistle of St. Jude-a resemblance probably arising from both writers using words and phrases drawn from the teachings of these heretics, whose high sounding pretensions of superior knowledge the two apostles indignantly denounce with a severity no doubt altogether merited. The object of the epistle was mainly to warn the faithful against these seducing teachers, and was written probably about the year 65-a short time previous to the apostle's martyrdom.

3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ: but he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. 10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: 11 for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall for so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
