persons have been awakened, out of a population not exceeding 3,000,000.

And shall England's only part be, to look on, and give thanks to God for His work in her sister countries?

Generously to rejoice with others in their prosperity is, it is true, in-wrought in the fibre of English character. And to "rejoice with them that do rejoice,” is one of the Christian's happiest duties. But when such gifts as these are in question, let us remember, that if we gain them in their fulness for ourselves, the treasury of heaven will never be the poorer for others. He who giveth liberally and upbraideth not, has inexhaustible stores.

"The quality of mercy is not strain'd;

It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath: it is twice bless'd:
It blesseth him that gives, and him that takes."

And Divine mercy is thrice blessed; for it blesses an outer circle, which, as it stands by to witness, takes courage to ask likewise of so royal a Giver.

People of God, in LONDON, who never pass through its crowded streets, nor look down its dark alleys without a pang and a prayer for creatures dragging out cheerless lives without hope, and without God in the world!-people of God, in the country, who have

brothers and sons launched into life in that vast metropolis, amidst its boundless snares and temptations, away from the shelter of your hearts and homes !cry mightily now for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit of the living God upon the city dead in trespasses and sins; until, from that mighty heart, quick pulses circulate throughout the country, and wherever England's sons make alien soil her own.

"SURELY HIS SALVATION IS NIGH THEM THAT FEAR HIM; THAT GLORY MAY DWELL IN OUR LAND.”

And let there be special prayer for British India, that now, after its baptism of the blood of its martyrs, and the baptism of the tears of its mourners, may come the baptism of fire by the Holy Ghost; till every British soldier and civilian go forth as an ambassador for Christ to the heathen, a light to lighten their darkness, and, following in the steps of a Divine Redeemer, to guide their feet into the way of peace.

Let prayer be made without ceasing, therefore, for our country and her dependencies, that God would give us the Pentecostal blessing!

Let there be individual prayer-the lonely wrestlings of those princes in Israel, who have power with God and prevail.

Let there be united prayer-the prayer that claims

the promise, "If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven."

Let there be social prayer-believing the Saviour's words, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there will I be in the midst of them."

Let there be public prayer-"Forsake not the assembling of yourselves together, as the manner of some is; and so much the more as ye see the day approaching."

And let these be daily prayers. It has been the daily prayer-meetings the few minutes in the noon of the day, rescued from the world and consecrated to God-which have won such trophies of answers as have seemed almost too good to be true.

Beginning, in Ireland, with four persons, and increasing to tens of thousands-beginning, in America, with six, and mounting up to hundreds of thousands henceforth, who shall despise the day of small things? Only, let Christians in every place begin at once.

And if there be none to meet with you, lonely watcher for a cloud, even the size of a man's hand, upon a heaven of brass, take heart, and look upward still! It is rising out of the sea, and shall spread over the heavens until there be "a sound of abundance of rain." Give but a few minutes of your noonday to your Bible

and prayer, and you shall meet with Him who met with Moses in the desert, and made him the deliverer of his nation; and who met with John imprisoned in Patmos, and revealed to him visions of the coming glory, till in his eyes the island of his exile was resplendent in the light of the jewelled city of the Lamb.

Remember, you can never plead alone touching anything that concerns the increase of your Redeemer's kingdom. The agreement must be perfect between you and Him for whose glory you are pleading, and who ever liveth to make intercession for us, and with us for the blessedness of a world from which He is

about to uplift the curse. He waits but the right moment to remind the Father of His pledge—“ Ask of me, and I shall give Thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for Thy possession."

Christians! claim now the promise, "the former rain" of which fell at Pentecost, when 3,000 souls were born to God in a day; and "the latter rain” of which was to precede the second advent of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.-" I will pour out my SPIRIT upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your

young men shall see visions; and also and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my SPIRIT. ... And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

In the might of these prayers may the ministers of the everlasting gospel preach JESUS to the people, with holy fire on their lips, touched with the live coal from the altar!

In the power of these prayers may every man teach his neighbour, saying, "Know the Lord!"-bidding him that is athirst "Come, and whosoever will, let him take of the water of life freely."

"How shall I preach so as to attract and benefit numbers?" inquired a young clergyman of one who had long given, with signal success, his Master's message of good news from heaven to sinners on earth. 'Exalt JESUS," was the reply. "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me."

"That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father;" that Father who was concerned with Him in an absolute equality in the work of bringing a lost world back from darkness to light; from the standard of a despairing rebellion to a happy loyalty; from hopeless misery to never-fading glory. "For GOD WAS IN CHRIST, reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them."
