He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed;
For he giveth of his bread to the poor.

PROVERBS Xxii. 9.

Whose eye with melting pity flows,
His life is like a summer rose;
But he whose ready hands are kind,
A father's heart in God shall find;
For better 'tis to love than weep,
And better far to work than sleep;
For human kindness is divine,

And what thou givest shall be thine.

NLY man can help man; money without man can do little or nothing, more likely less than nothing. As our Lord redeemed the world by being a man, the true Son of the true Father, so the only way for a man to help men is to be a true man to this neighbor and that.

GEORGE MACDONALD

We owe to man higher succors than food and fire. We owe to man man.

EMERSON

Every one possessed with a spirit of benevolence is ordained to go forth and preach the gospel to every creature, each in the language of his own business.

BEECHER

Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly MATTHEW v. 48.

Father is perfect.

Make channels for the streams of Love,
Where they may broadly run;

And Love has overflowing streams

To fill them every one.

But if at any time thou cease
Such channels to provide,
The very founts of Love for thee
Will soon be parched and dried.

For we must share, if we would keep
That good thing from above;
Ceasing to give, we cease to have; —

Such is the law of Love.

ARCHBISHOP TRENCH

BEGIN to suspect that the common transactions of life are the most sacred channels for the spread of the heavenly leaven.

GEORGE MACDONALD

How will you appropriate this world of man to yourself and make it yours? ... Go forth into the busy world and love it; interest yourself in its life; mingle kindly with its joys and sorrows; try what you can do for men rather than what you can make them do for you, and you will know what it is to have men yours, better than if you were their king or master.

BROOKE HERFORD

Discharge to men the priestly office, and, present or absent, you shall be followed with their love as by an angel.

And the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved entire, without blame. ... Faithful is he that calleth you, who will also do it. I THESS. V. 23, 24.

Plant flowers in the soul's front yard,
Set out new shade and blossom trees,
An' let the soul once froze an' hard,
Sprout crocuses of new idees.

Yes, clean yer house, an' clean yer shed,
An' clean yer barn in ev'ry part;

But brush the cobwebs from yer head,

An' sweep the snow banks from yer heart!

HE man who has begun to live more seriously within, begins to live more simply

without.

PHILLIPS BROOKS

Why are we so much more dainty about the use and storage of our material mansion than of our mind?... My house, it is yours! This interior habitation which I am, more costly and durable than one of oak or marble, welcomes you to the ideas, affections, aspirations, hopes, all the furniture which no mechanical artisan ever fashioned and adorned; and, before God, as here I live and stand, I would rather deal out to you sour bread and stale water than ill humors and unreasonable whims. I will not invite you to feast with an unclean spirit, or any one or all

of the seven more wicked he may find in dry places to fetch back, after taking his intermission or vacation of going out. . . . Let the inward house have a gate that swings easy and does not creak on its hinges. Let truthful transparencies stand for the panes of plate-glass, and patiently listening ears be doors which no just petition seeks in vain. Let a watchful conscience dust and sweep and wash every nook and corner. Ventilate with every honest opinion that blows. Then, under this little but wondrous arch and dome guarding the brain, instrument of the soul, will be joy.

REMEDIES FOR IMPATIENCE

Prelude

THE GUIDING HAND

Is this the way, my Father?—'Tis, my child. Thou must pass through this tangled, dreary

wild,

If thou wouldst reach the city undefiled,

Thy peaceful home above.

But enemies are around. Yes, child, I know

That where least expecting thou shalt find a foe.

But victor thou shalt prove o'er all below.

Only seek strength above.
