PREFACE.

Ir is not my intention to attempt a regular exposition of this wonderful Book of Jonah, nor can I even claim for this little work the merit of a studied composition. The substance of it has been given in addresses to my Bible-class of young women in six Sundays consecutively, without any notes being made beforehand, and it is now written down from memory with a few variations, as it has occurred to me that what has interested my class, may be useful to others also. The book is given to the public, with many prayers that the Great Head of the Church may use this feeble effort to His glory, and to the good of souls.

CHAPTER I.

Chapter i. 1.-Now the word of the Lord came unto Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying,

2. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

3. But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish, from the presence of the Lord.

As all Scripture is given by inspiration, every part may become useful to souls, and we may as earnestly look for a blessing while studying together this book of Jonah,
