By power oppressed, and mocked by pride,
The Nazarene, the Crucified?

5 While sinners to the rocks complain,
And seek the mountain's cleft in vain;
The saints, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy, the Lord is come!

1 HERE is a blessèd home

Beyond this land of woe,

Where trials never come,
Nor tears of sorrow flow;
Where faith is lost in sight,
And patient hope is crowned,
And everlasting light
Its glory throws around.

2 There is a land of peace,
Good angels know it well;
Glad songs that never cease
Within its portals swell;
Around its glorious throne

Ten thousand saints adore
Christ, with the Father one,
And Spirit, evermore.

3 Oh joy all joys beyond,

To see the Lamb who died,
And count each sacred wound
In hands and feet and side;
To give to Him the praise
Of every triumph won,

And sing through endless days
The great things He hath done!

4 Look up, ye saints of God,
Nor fear to tread below
The path your Saviour trod
Of daily toil and woe;
Wait but a little while
In uncomplaining love,
His own most gracious smile
Shall welcome you above.

HERE is no sorrow, Lord, too light
To bring in prayer to Thee;
There is no anxious care too slight
To wake Thy sympathy.

2 Thou who hast trod the thorny road
Wilt share each small distress;
The love which bore the greater load
Will not refuse the less.

3 There is no secret sigh we breathe
But meets Thine ear Divine;
And every cross grows light beneath
The shadow, Lord, of Thine.

4 Life's ills without, sin's strife within,
The heart would overflow,

But for that love which died for sin,
That love which wept with woe.

HE roseate hues of early dawn,
The brightness of the day,

The crimson of the sunset sky,
How fast they fade away!
Oh for the pearly gates of heaven,
Oh for the golden floor,

Oh for the Sun of Righteousness
That setteth nevermore!

2 The highest hopes we cherish here,
How fast they tire and faint;
How many a spot defiles the robe
That wraps an earthly saint!
Oh for a heart that never sins,
Oh for a soul washed white,
Oh for a voice to praise our King,
Nor weary day nor night.

3 Here faith is ours, and heavenly hope,
And grace to lead us higher;

But there are perfectness and peace,
Beyond our best desire.

Oh, by Thy love and anguish, Lord,
Oh, by Thy life laid down,

T

Grant that we fall not from Thy grace,
Nor cast away our crown.

C. M.

HE saints on earth and those above
But one communion make;

Joined to their Lord in bonds of love,
All of His grace partake.

2 One family we dwell in Him;
One Church, above, beneath;
Though now divided by the stream,
The narrow stream, of death.

3 One army of the living God,
To His command we bow;

Part of the host have crossed the flood,
And part are crossing now.

4 Lo! thousands to their endless home
Are swiftly borne away;

And we not long on earth shall roam,
But soon must leave as they.

5 Lord Jesus, be our constant guide;
Then, when the word is given,
Bid death's cold flood its waves divide,
And show the path to heaven.

TROYTE'S CHANT, No. 2.

HE strain upraise of joy and praise, Allelùia to the glory of their King shall the ransomed people sing: Alleluia : Alleluia! · 2 And the choirs that dwèll on high shall re-echo through the sky Alleluia Alleluia! 3 They in the rest of Pàradise who dwell: the blessed ones, with joy the chorus swell: Alleluia : Alleluia !

:

4 The planets beaming on their hèavenly way : the shining constellations jòin, and say: Allelùia Alleluia!

5 Ye clouds that onward sweep, ye winds on pinions light ye thunders, echoing loud and deep, ye lightnings wildly bright in sweet consènt unite your Alleluia!

6 Ye floods and ocean billows, ye storms and winter snow ye days of cloudless beauty, hoar frost and summer glow ye groves that wave in spring and glorious forests, sing: Alleluia!

7 First let the birds, with painted plùmage gay exalt their great Creator's pràise, and say Alleluia : Alleluia!

8 Then let the beasts of earth, with vàrying strain join in creation's hymn, and cry

again Alleluia: Alleluia!

:

9 There let the mountains thunder forth sonòrous Alleluia: there let the valleys sing in gentler chorus: Alleluia !

* The points (:) correspond with the double bars of the chant.

10 Thou jubilant abyss of ocean, cry: Allelùia : ye tracts of earth and continents, reply: Allelùia!

11 To God, who all creàtion made: the frequent hymn be duly paid: Alleluia: Allelùia!

12 This is the strain, the eternal strain, the Lord Almighty loves: Alleluia: this is the song, the heavenly song, that Christ the King approves :

Alleluia!

13 Wherefore we sing, both heart and voice awàking : Allelùia : and children's voices echo, answer making : Alleluia!

14 Now from all men bè out-poured: Alleluia to the Lord with Alleluia èvermore the Son and Spirit wè adore.

15 Praise be done to the Three in One: AlleAlleluia: Alleluia.

1 HINE for ever! God of love,
Hear us from Thy throne above;
Thine for ever may we be

Here and in eternity.

2 Thine for ever! Lord of Life,

Shield us through our earthly strife;
Thou, the Life, the Truth, the Way,
Guide us to the realms of day.
3 Thine for ever! oh how blest
They who find in Thee their rest!
Saviour, Guardian, heavenly Friend,
Oh defend us to the end!

4 Thine for ever! Saviour, keep
These Thy frail and trembling sheep;
