C. M.

Thee, O Lord, with dawning light,
My thankful voice I'll raise.

Thy mighty power to celebrate,
Thy holy Name to praise.

2 For Thou, in helpless hour of night,
Hast compassèd my bed,

And now, refreshed with peaceful sleep,
Thou liftest up my head.

3 Grant me, O God, Thy quickening grace,
Through this and every day;
That guided and upheld by Thee,
My feet may never stray.

4 Increase my faith, increase my hope,
Increase my zeal and love;

And fix my heart's affections all
On Christ and things above.

5 And when, life's labour o'er, I sink
To slumber in the grave,

In death's dark vale be Thou my trust,
To succour and to save.

6 That so, through Him who bled and died,
And rose again, for me,

"The grave and gate of death" may prove A passage home to Thee.

A

Evening.

10. 10. 10. 10.

BIDE with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me
abide;

When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh abide with me.

2 Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day, Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see;

O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

3 I need Thy presence every passing hour; What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?

Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with

me.

4 I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness; Where is death's sting? where, grave, thy victory?

I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

5 Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom, and point me to the

skies;

Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;

In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

COME

L. M.

YOME to me, Lord, when first I wake,As the faint lights of morning break; Bid purest thoughts within me rise, Like crystal dew-drops, to the skies. 2 Come to me in the sultry noon,— Or earth's low communings will soon Of Thy dear face eclipse the light, And change my fairest day to night.

12

3 Come to me in the evening shade,— And if my heart from Thee hath strayed, Oh bring it back, and from afar

Smile on me like Thine evening star. 4 Come to me in the midnight hour,When sleep withholds its balmy power; Let my lone spirit find her rest,

Like John, upon my Saviour's breast.

5 Come to me through life's varied way,—
And when its pulses cease to play,
Then, Saviour, bid me come to Thee,
That where Thou art, Thy child may be.

L. M.

1 LORY to Thee, my God, this night
For all the blessings of the light;
Keep me, oh keep me, King of kings,
Under Thine own Almighty wings.

2 Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done,
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed ;
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the awful Day.

4 Oh may my soul on Thee repose,
And may sweet sleep mine eyelids close,
Sleep that shall me more vigorous make
To serve my God when I awake.

5 When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply;
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,

No powers of darkness me molest.
6 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, angelic host,

1

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

OD, who madest earth and heaven,

G Darkness and light:

Who the day for toil hast given,
For rest the night;

May Thine angel-guards defend us,
Slumber sweet Thy mercy send us,
Holy dreams and hopes attend us,
This livelong night.

2 Guard us waking, guard us sleeping,
And, when we die,

May we in Thy mighty keeping
All peaceful lie:

When the last dread call shall wake us,
Do not Thou, our God, forsake us,
But to reign in glory take

us,

UN of my soul, Thou Saviour dear,
It is not night if Thou be near;
Oh may no earth-born cloud arise
To hide Thee from Thy servant's eyes.
2 When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought, how sweet to rest
For ever on my Saviour's breast!

3 Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without Thee I cannot live ;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without Thee I dare not die.
4 If some poor wandering child of Thine
Have spurned to-day the voice Divine,
Now, Lord, the gracious work begin;
Let him no more lie down in sin.
5 Watch by the sick; enrich the poor
With blessings from Thy boundless store;
Be every mourner's sleep to-night,
Like infant's slumbers, pure and light.
6 Come near and bless us when we wake,
Ere through the world our way we take;
Till in the ocean of Thy love

S

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

8.8.8.8.8.8.

WEET Saviour, bless us ere we go;
Thy word into our minds instil;

And make our lukewarm hearts to glow
With lowly love and fervent will.

Through life's long day and death's dark night, O gentle Jesus, be our Light.

2 The day is gone, its hours have run,

And Thou hast taken count of all: The scanty triumphs grace hath won, The broken vow, the frequent fall. Through life's long day and death's dark night, O gentle Jesus, be our Light.

3 Grant us, dear Lord, from evil ways
True absolution and release;

And bless us, more than in past days,
With purity and inward peace.
