THEODORIC THE FIRST,

KING OF THE GOTHS.

THAT Nation which we have fuppofed to be barbarous, because it bore the name of the Goths, occafionally produced men of great virtues and of great knowledge: Theodoric was of that defcription. In his faith he was an Arian, yet he never perfecuted those who differed from him in his religious opinions. He was extremely displeased with thofe perfons whom he sufpected of coming over to his belief to gain his favour, and without really believing what they profeffed to believe. One of his Officers having thus temporized with his faith, he immediately ordered
