expedition, and to act as aid-de camp, in order that he may be able to tranfmit an accurate and judicious account of the whole affair to his learned brethern of the Royal Society.

This modern fculapius alfo cures the Gout to a miracle. About five years ago, when Lord Chatham was given over by the faculty, he wrote and published a letter in the Public Ledger, and gave our English Demofthenes an excellent prefcription, which faved his life. Lord Chatham behaved with his ufual ingratitude, and never reward ed the Doctor; though the, miniftry have never ceafed perfecuting him for thus preferving the life of their bittereft enemy.

I can mention another anecdote to the Doctor's honour, which shews his moderation and generous principles. That great patriotic Earl, Lord Sh-b-ne, who lodged laft fummer at Black-rock, preffed the ingenious phyfician to return to England and affitt him in writing Junius's letters; promifing to provide hand fomely for him when Lord Chatham and he came into administration. This tempting offer the Doctor inftantly rejected, as he thought the prefent mode of political writing, too abusive for one of his liberal fentiments: and befides, he told his Lordship that he was determined to ftay here till the plague had ceased in all parts of the world; and did not doubt but his prefence would be as beneficial to to this poor kingdom, as Aaron's flanding between the dead and the living, which flopt the plague in the camp of the Ifraelites.

With grateful hearts we should commemorate the many favours we receive from England. Our fine gentlemen

gentlemen and ladies, would have nothing but potatoe leaves to cover their nakedness, only for our generous brethren, who furnish us with cloth and filk. They export cow doctors for our cattle; physicians, wife like Solomon and Rowley, for our bodies; and bishops and priests to take care of our fouls; whose charity and benevolence is unquestionable, for they are generally endowed with the most extenfive fees and parishes, though every body knows their apoftolic labours are doubled by this hard treatment; yet like good Chriftians they patiently submit, well knowing that their mafter's kingdom is not of this world. Formerly too we were bleffed with English judges; men of fuch amazing abilities, and great modefty, that their merit was never known in England-that was left for our fuperior fagacity to find out-But fince a refident Lord Lieutenant weakly imagined that he could choose Irishmen fit to decide on the lives and properties of their countrymen, we are a ruined nation! Our trade has failed, our banks and merchants ftop payment! The grafs grows in our deferted ftreets-The revenue is ruined, fince our arbitrary Viceroy difmiffed that great financier Mr. Py, from his Majefty's fervice. Our artillery rufts, and our magazines are gone to decay, fince that master of projectiles, Lord Sn no longer points our artillery.

In this "distressful, distracted state of affairs," (as my friend Doctor Lucas fays) if the publication of this precious fragment can alleviate the calamities of my country, and inftruct our ignorant Smiths, Quinns, Barrys, and fuch quacks, in the irrefragable principles of phyfic, I shall think myself happy.

It was part "of a fhip's crew that had arrived from the Levant, "and who had come on fhore all feemingly in good "health. But when the men had opened their box"es and shifted themselves, they became all of a "fudden ill; which was a convincing proof that the "infection had been conveyed in their cloathes. "Some had buboes under their armpits, and behind "their ears only; others had the carbuncle of the "livid circle, and fome were attended with both, "and all recovered. The method I took to preserve myself, was to change my cloathes, and to fumigate them daily, washing myfelf with vinegar, in "which were infused garlick, rue, betony, and juniper berries, of which I took inwardly, twice a day, two meat spoonfuls, gargling my mouth with "it, and fnuffing it up my noftrils. To this infufion "I always added a little camphire. I own I conceived the highest deteftation of its author, by reading SYLLA's fevere animadverfions on it, in the Freeman. I now entirely agree with him, that the author (whoever he is) of that "fcan"dalous, infamous," falfe, and " immoral" epigram, deferves to be marked like Cain, as a vagabond, and a murderer of reputations.-He is certainly a friend to the Jefuits, a dangerous enemy to the Proteftant religion, a difaffected fubject, and a betrayer of his country. The very first line cafts an ungenerous reflection on all thofe who renounce the errors of Popery. Is this infolence to be borne, as long as
