At a Meeting of the Cumberland and Westmoreland Antiquarian and Archæological Society, held at Wigton, on the 31st of August, 1876, the Rev. Canon Simpson, LL.D., in the Chair, it was resolved: "That it is desirable to take steps to publish the Nicolson MSS., and that permission for so doing be asked from the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle." Extract from the Minutes of the Dean and Chapter of Carlisle : : "That Mr. Ferguson be informed that the Dean and Chapter assent to his application on behalf of this Society (headed Archæological Society) for permission to print Bishop Nicolson's MS. Visitation of the Diocese of Carlisle, the MS. of which is now in the Library, on the express understanding that the text alone be published." |
