On the following day Cæsar called together his officers, and told them that the enemy were about to attack the town, and that the women and children must be sent away within three hours. While he was speaking a messenger arrived, sent from Rome by the consuls to recall the army and its general. If Cæsar had obeyed the Senate he would never have returned alive to Italy. For the enemy, hearing that he would be recalled, had decided to prepare an ambush. Cæsar feared this and made no reply to the messenger. Thus both he and his army were saved, while a few days later the enemy were defeated and put to flight.

Dum per trepidam turbam cruento gladio sibi ipse facit viam, concursu ad clamorem facto, comprehensum regii satellites retraxerunt. Ubi ante tribunal regis stetit, “Romanus sum inquit civis; C. Mucium vocant. Hostis hostem occidere volui, nec ad mortem minus animi est quam fuit ad caedem."
