MONTGOMERY.

Preparation for Heaven.

1 HEAVEN is a place of rest from sin ;
But all who hope to enter there,
Must here that holy course begin
Which shall their souls for rest prepare.

2 Clean hearts, O God, in us create;
Right spirits, Lord, in us renew;
Commence we now that higher state,
Now do thy will as angels do.

3 In Jesus' footsteps may we tread,
Learn every lesson of his love,
And be from grace to glory led,
From heaven below to heaven above.

Near Approach of Salvation.

1 AWAKE, ye saints, and raise your eyes,
And raise your voices high;
Awake, and praise that sovereign love
That shows salvation nigh.

2 On all the wings of time it flies;
Each moment brings it near;
Then welcome, each declining day!
Welcome, each closing year!

3 Not many years their round shall run, Not many mornings rise,

Ere all its glories stand revealed
To our admiring eyes.

4 Ye wheels of nature, speed your course; Ye mortal powers, decay;

Fast as ye bring the night of death,
Ye bring eternal day.

The Hope of Heaven our Support in Trials.

1 WHEN I can read my title clear To mansions in the skies,

I bid farewell to every fear,

And wipe my weeping eyes.

2 Let cares, like a wild deluge, come, And storms of sorrow fall;

May I but safely reach my home,
My God, my heaven, my all,-

3 There shall I bathe my weary soul
In seas of heavenly rest,
And not a wave of trouble roll
Across my peaceful breast.

Contemplation of Judgment.

1 O GOD, mine inmost soul convert,
And deeply on my thoughtful heart
Eternal things impress;

Give me to feel their solemn weight,
And tremble on the brink of fate,
And wake to righteousness.

2 Be this my one great business here, -
With serious industry and fear,
Eternal bliss t' insure,

Thine utmost counsel to fulfil,
And suffer all thy righteous will,
And to the end endure.

3 Then, Father, then my soul receive,
Transported from this vale to live
And reign with thee above,
Where faith is sweetly lost in sight,
And hope in full, supreme delight,
And everlasting love.

MONTGOMERY.

The Issues of Life and Death.

1 O, WHERE shall rest be found, Rest for the weary soul?

"Twere vain the ocean depths to sound, Or pierce to either pole.

2 The world can never give
The bliss for which we sigh;
'Tis not the whole of life to live,
Nor all of death to die.

3 Beyond this vale of tears,
There is a life above,
Unmeasured by the flight of years;
And all that life is love.

4 There is a death whose pang
Outlasts the fleeting breath;
O, what appalling horrors hang
Around the "second death"!

5 Lord God of truth and grace,
Teach us that death to shun,
Lest we be banished from thy face,
And utterly undone.

6 Here would we end our quest;
Alone are found in thee

The life of perfect love, the rest
Of immortality.

Eternal Mansions.

1 PASS a few swiftly-fleeting years, And all that now in bodies live Shall quit, like me, the vale of tears, Their righteous sentence to receive. 2 But all, before they hence remove, May mansions for themselves prepare In that eternal home above;

And, O my God, shall I be there?

Prayer at Morning and Evening.

[ocr errors]

1 To prayer, to prayer! for the morning breaks,
And Earth in her Maker's smiles awakes.
His light is on all below and above-
The light of gladness, and life, and love.
O, then, on the breath of this early air,
Send upward the incense of grateful prayer.
2 To prayer! for the glorious sun is gone,
And the gathering darkness of night comes on.
Like a curtain from God's kind hand it flows
To shade the couch where his children repose.
Then kneel, while the watching stars are bright,
And give your last thoughts to the Guardian of
night.

Morning Hymn.

1 Now the shades of night are gone;
Now the morning light is come;
Lord, may we be thine to-day;
Drive the shades of sin away.
