MONTGOMERY.

Christ our Example in Suffering.

1 Go to dark Gethsemane,

Ye that feel temptation's power; Your Redeemer's conflict see; Watch with him one bitter hour. Turn not from his griefs away; Learn of Jesus Christ to pray. 2 Follow to the judgment-hall; View the Lord of life arraigned. O, the wormwood and the gall! O, the pangs his soul sustained! Shun not suffering, shame, or loss; Learn of him to bear the cross.

3 Calvary's mournful mountain climb; There, admiring at his feet, Mark that miracle of time, God's own sacrifice complete; "It is finished," hear him cry; Learn of Jesus Christ to die.

4 Early hasten to the tomb,

Where they laid his breathless clay;
All is solitude and gloom;

Who has taken him away?

-

Christ is risen; he meets our eyes:
Savior, teach us so to rise.

CHRISTIAN PSALMIST.

Behold the Man!

1 BEHOLD the man! how glorious he! Before his foes he stands unawed, And, without wrong or blasphemy, He claims to be the Son of God.

2 Behold the man! by all condemned,
Assaulted by a host of foes;

His person and his claims contemned,
A man of suffering and of woes.

3 Behold the man! so weak he seems,
His awful word inspires no fear;

But soon must he who now blasphemes,
Before his judgment-seat appear.

4 Behold the man! though scorned below,
He bears the greatest name above;
The angels at his footstool bow,
And all his royal claims approve.

MONTGOMERY.

Christ's Passion.

1 THE morning dawns upon the place Where Jesus spent the night in prayer: Through yielding glooms behold his face: Nor form nor comeliness is there.

2 Last eve, by those he called his own, Betrayed, forsaken, or denied,

He met his enemies alone,

In all their malice, rage, and pride.

3 No guile within his mouth is found; He neither threatens nor complains; Meek as a lamb for slaughter bound, Dumb 'midst his murderers he remains.

4 But hark! He prays, 'tis for his foes He speaks,

Answers,

'tis comfort to his friends; and Paradise bestows;

He bows his head; the conflict ends.

5 Truly this was the Son of God! -Though in a servant's mean disguise, And bruised beneath the Father's rod; Not for himself, - - for man he dies.

"They shall look on Him whom they pierced."

1 BOUND upon th' accursed tree,

Faint and bleeding, who is he?
By the cheek so pale and wan,
By the crown of twisted thorn,
By the side so deeply pierced,
By the baffled, burning thirst,
By the drooping, death-dewed brow,
Son of man! 'tis thou! 'tis thou!

2 Bound upon th' accursed tree,
Sad and dying, who is he?
By the last and bitter cry,
The life breathed out in agony,
By the lifeless body laid
In the chamber of the dead,
Crucified! we know thee now;
Son of man! 'tis thou! 'tis thou!

3 Bound upon th' accursed tree,

[ocr errors]

Dread and awful, who is he?
By the prayer for them that slew, -
"Lord! they know not what they do!".
By the sealed and guarded cave,
By the spoiled and empty grave,
By that clear, immortal brow,
Son of God! 'tis thou! 'tis thou!

Attractive Influence of a crucified Savior.

BEHOLD th' amazing sight,
The Savior lifted high!

Behold the Son of God's delight
Expire in agony !

2 For whom, for whom, my heart,
Were all these sorrows borne?
Why did he feel that piercing smart,
And meet that various scorn?

3 For love of us he bled,

And all in torture died;

Twas love that bowed his fainting head, And oped his gushing side.

4 I see, and I adore,

In sympathy of love;

I feel the strong, attractive power
To lift my soul above.

5 In thee our hearts unite,

Nor share thy griefs alone,

But from thy cross pursue their flight
To thy triumphant throne.

1 MORNING breaks upon the tomb!
Jesus dissipates its gloom!

Day of triumph! through the skies
See the glorious Savior rise!

2 Christians, dry your flowing tears;
Chase those unbelieving fears;
Look on his deserted grave;
Doubt no more his power to save.

3 Ye who are of death afraid,
Triumph in the scattered shade;
Drive your anxious fears away;
See the place where Jesus lay.

4 So the rising sun appears,
Shedding radiance o'er the spheres ;
So returning beams of light
Chase the terrors of the night.

Resurrection of Christ. Morning.

1 AGAIN the Lord of life and light
Awakes the kindling ray,
Unseals the eyelids of the morn,
And pours increasing day.

2 O, what a night was that which wrapped The heathen world in gloom!

O, what a sun, which broke, this day,
Triumphant from the tomb!

3 This day be grateful homage paid,
And loud hosannas sung;
Let gladness dwell in every heart,
And praise on every tongue.

4 Ten thousand differing lips shall join
To hail this welcome morn,

Which scatters blessings from its wings
To nations yet unborn.
