2 His power subdues our sins,
And his forgiving love,

Far as the east is from the west,
Doth all our guilt remove.

3 The pity of the Lord,

To those that fear his name,
Is such as tender parents feel;
He knows our feeble frame.

4 Our days are as the grass,
Or like the morning flower;

If one sharp blast sweep o'er the field,
It withers in an hour

5 But thy compassions, Lord,
To endless years endure;
And children's children ever find
Thy words of promise sure.

BOWRING.

God is Love.

1 God is love; his mercy brightens
All the path in which we rove;
Bliss he wakes, and woe he lightens;
God is wisdom, God is love.

2 Chance and change are busy ever;
Man decays, and ages move;
But his mercy waneth never;
God is wisdom, God is love.

3 E'en the hour that darkest seemeth
Will his changeless goodness prove;
From the gloom his brightness streameth;
God is wisdom, God is love.

4 He with earthly cares entwineth
Hope and comfort from above;
Every where his glory shineth;
God is wisdom, God is love.

SEWALL'S COL.

Loving-kindness of God.

1 FATHER, to thy kind love we owe
All that is fair and good below;
Bestower of the health that lies
On tearless cheeks and cheerful eyes!

2 Yet deem we not that thus alone
Thy mercy and thy love are shown;
For we have learned, with higher praise,
And holier names, to speak thy ways.

3 In woe's dark hour, our kindest stay!
Sole trust when life shall pass away!
Teacher of hopes that light the gloom
Of death, and consecrate the tomb!

4 Patient with headstrong guilt to bear;
Slow to avenge, and kind to spare;
Listening to prayer, and reconciled
Full quickly to thy erring child!

[blocks in formation]

1 My Father! cheering name!
O, may I call thee mine?

Give me the humble hope to claim
A portion so divine.

2 This can my fears control,
And bid my sorrows fly :
What real harm can reach my soul
Beneath my Father's eye?

3 Whate'er thy will denies
I calmly would resign;

For thou art just, and good, and wise:
O, bend my will to thine!

4 Whate'er thy will ordains,
O, give me strength to bear;
Still let me know a Father reigns,
And trust a Father's care.

God our Benefactor.

1 My Maker and my King!
To thee my all I owe:
Thy sovereign bounty is the spring
From whence my blessings flow.

2 Thou ever good and kind!
A thousand reasons move,
A thousand obligations bind
My heart to grateful love.

3 The creature of thy hand,
On thee alone I live:
My God, thy benefits demand
More praise than life can give.

4 O, let thy grace inspire

My soul with strength divine; Let all my powers to thee aspire, And all my days be thine.

[blocks in formation]

Praise for Protection, Grace, and Truth.

1 My God, in whom are all the springs
Of boundless love and grace unknown,
Hide me beneath thy spreading wings,
Till the dark cloud is overblown.

2 Up to the heavens I send my cry;
The Lord will my desires perform;
He sends his angels from the sky,
And saves me from the threatening storm.

3 Be thou exalted, O my God,

Above the heavens, where angels dwell;
Thy power on earth be known abroad,
And land to land thy wonders tell.

[blocks in formation]

Mercy of God to the Frailty of Man.

1 LORD, we adore thy wondrous name,
And make that name our trust,
Which raised at first this curious frame
From mean and lifeless dust.

2 Awhile these frail machines endure,
The fabric of a day;

Then know their vital powers no more,
But moulder back to clay.

3 Yet, Lord, whate'er is felt or feared,
This thought is our repose,

That He, by whom this frame was reared,
Its various weakness knows.

4 Thou view'st us with a pitying eye, While struggling with our load; In pains and dangers thou art nigh, Our Father and our God.

5 Gently supported by thy love,
We tend to realms of peace,
Where every pain shall far remove,
And every frailty cease.
