FR ROM the number of Pieces of Italian Poetry which I had delivered to Gentlemen who kindly undertook to tranflate them, I had reason to believe, that this Collection would have been larger than it is. But not receiving all their tranflations fo foon as was expected, I have determined to print fuch as are already come to my hands, that I may not trefpafs any longer upon the patience of those who wish to see a Collection of this kind. To this cause must be attributed the want of translations from fome Italian Poets of the firft character, whose names to my great concern, do not appear in the book. I am fenfible of my Obligation to feveral Gentlemen for tranflations which they have fent me of Pieces of their own Selection; but I muft defire them to excufe me if I have not availed myself of their kindness; and to confider, that as I intended to print nothing which could expofe me to the cenfure of Perfons of the greateft delicacy, I could by no means admit Le Novelle di Ruftico ADVERTISEMENT. monaco of Boccacio, E di Suor Appellagia of Fiorenzuola, and fome part of . . . . . . of Marine. I confess that these translations, would not only have enlarged, but alfo greatly adorned my Collection: for in Point of Elegance they are not inferior to any which it contains. I therefore lament the neceflity of rejecting them, as it would on the contrary, have afforded me the greatest satisfaction to have found fuch able Pens employed in compofitions more proper for the eye of an University fo much diflinguifhed by good morals. I know that fuch fubjects would have been more agreeble to the Tafte of fome, Sai che là corre il mondo, ove piu verfi TASSO. Canto I. Nevertheless, I trust that the Authors will pardon this omiffion of their Performances, and that thefe innocent Pieces of Poetry which I offer to the Public, will meet with that kind reception which I hope they deferve, from Perfons of good Tate, and found Judgement. The abovementioned tranflations, whilt in my hands, fhall not be fhewn to any perfon; and if the Authors chufe to have them again, upon fending me their Addrefs, and defcribing cach Piece by its firft Verfe and Signature, they fhall be immediately returned.
